10,000 coins topple

by Adam Finley, posted Oct 21st 2006 4:12PM
coinsA new series on SkyOne in the UK called The Big Idea pits inventors and entrepreneurs against one another for a chance to have their invention or business idea realized, and to win £100,000. Since I live in the US I've never actually seen the show, but I did find a commercial for it I think you guys will enjoy. It features a ton of English pound coins toppled over like dominoes, a feat that may or may not have been accomplished with some clever editing, but who cares, it's still cool to look at. I think pounds are a bit thicker than American coins, but I still imagine it would be difficult to make them stand up like that. I don't think I would have the patience to pull off such a feat. In fact, I know I wouldn't. Check out the coinage after the jump.

I was part of the project - it was a serious pain. Vaseline is the secret to keeping them in place... and a LOT of patience.

sticky coins

See how the train of coins slows down a bit at spots, I'd gather it is the glue that is used to hold thenm in place.

The way the video is cut suggests that the coins were actually set up more than once, making it all the more impressive.

Mmm...

Just measured a £ and it's 3mm thick :P

Really easy to make them stand up, but I just tried with 2 of them - one fell over and the other rolled away :(

Really cool video, anyway.

Amazing feat to assemble all that line of coins there. One thing I have to say though is that pounds are very very thick compared to US coins (about 2.5 quarters, I'd say) which makes it very easy make one of them stand on its side. That still doesn't apply to 10,000 of them.

I don't care if it was edited or not - that's still a LOT of coins....
