CBS' freeSpeech is usually free, but not always speech

Katie CouricI have a love/hate relationship with that freeSpeech (yeah, that's the spelling CBS seems to like to use so I'll use it too) segment on The CBS Evening News. I think it's an interesting idea, but it has several things wrong with it. First, the topics are usually things that everyone can agree with and aren't really counter to anything. Then we had the revelation from Bill Maher that he wanted to do something controversial on religion, and they kinda balked. And lately I've been seeing freeSpeech segments with Bob Schieffer, who is a CBS newsman and the former host of the show. Huh? Are they not getting enough people who want to talk on TV? I doubt that. And just last week a freeSpeech segment featured Katie Couric interviewing Senator John McCain. Again, huh?

Still, it's a good idea. Tonight might be interesting: TV Newser is reporting that FOX News' Sean Hannity will be giving his viewpoint.

I think the freeSpeech concept is an interesting idea, too.

It could really invigorate the broadcast, but too often the freeSpeechers are lame. Take for instance Katie Couric's first episode when they had Morgan Spurlock ("Super Size Me") as the first.

Don't get me wrong, I like "Super Size Me", but having Spurlock on the first show basically showed me that CBS wasn't really interested in changing the game (or have a sense of history) when they couldn't put up someone who has a real point of view.

Bill Maher would be great and given the role of religion in politics, I am sure he would have had a very powerful observation.

Come on, Katie. Give Bill Maher a break.

Put the FREE back into freeSPEECH.

How despicable that Sean Hannity is being given yet another platform to spew his bile. He has his own nightly TV show and his own daily radio show! They can tolerate his lies and distortions, but not Bill Maher's views on religion?
