CSI: Miami - Curse of the Coffin

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Oct 24th 2006 10:49AM
Horatio Caine(S05E06) Has CSI: Miami ever had a Halloween themed episode before? I don't think they have. Good for us because they saved all the cheesy stuff for this one. What a great episode. Sort of creepy, completely laughable and it was chock full of hilarious lines. Take that picture to the right? Anyone else remember what Horatio mumbled as he was casually strolling away from the exploding car? "Burn baby, burn." Stuff like that? Another reason to love this show.

Beyond the complete "cheese in a can" that this episode personified, the story itself was actually pretty intricate and I think the writers did a good job by giving very plausible explanations to all the "scary and creepy" things that occurred. It all made sense in the end. Except for how the tiny coffin made it under the killer's sand-chair on the beach. Who put it there? I didn't get that one at all. Must've been the curse... ooooooh.

But I liked how the writers incorporated some different topics into the case. Adding stuff like Santería rituals (everyone loves a good maggot filled goat's head) and having a guy fake his death with blow-fish poison? Maybe it's just me and perhaps I'm giving too much credit, but I thought that stuff was pretty creative. I found it weird that Wolfe seemed to be the only one who was getting "spooked" throughout the entire episode though.

Other random points:

  • When did Valera become a blonde? This is a new thing right?
  • I love how Tripp got involved in the lab. I don't think this has happened before but it was great to have him giving his input on the golf clubs with Calleigh.
  • We found out that Delko is extremely religious and because of that he stayed away from the Santería altar. Did we know that about him? I'm not sure if that's been mentioned before.
  • Do people actually place cameras and microphones in cemeteries to listen to their deceased relatives? It probably happens all the time... weird.
  • What happened to Rob Estes? Despite the fact that I hate his character (Nick, Natalia's ex), it's going to tick me off even more if they just make his character disappear and never resolve that storyline. Although, if you think about it, this episode doesn't really add to the season. It kind of stands alone. So it may have been shot out of order. Nick will be back.

CSI: Miami gets a week off next week, but it returns with four new episodes in a row starting on November 6.

I really hate the Delko character. I think he's acting is worse than David's (who i like actually). Adam Rodriguez is just bad in everything I have seen him on. He thinks cause he is the token latin on the show he can get away with it-I wish they would just end his character and somehow bring Speedle back from the dead. He was great!! I loved his piss and vinegar attitude!!!

Have you ever seen David Caruso's acting outside CSI:Miami? I have and it sucks! Go rent Session 9 or Jade or Kiss of the Spider Woman. he acts it the same way. i see no diffrence. Perhaps he is not acting, it's just him. They should change this show to a comedy because there is nothing crime about it really. I really feel bad because the actors are horrible (with the exception of Emily Proctor, Actor who plays Frank Tripp). All the episodes are the same.

And stop picking on David Caruso-he didn't write the script for the episode.

I love all three (3) CSI show's- although I have to agree that the last CSI:Miami "Burn Baby Burn" was a bit "Hollywoodish", especially the end. But it was only one stupid episode I think everyone is talking about. The Show and cast members are great-in my opinion. Las Vegas has had it's share of "Hollywoodish"moments, too! Along w/CSI:NY. They're only TV SHOWS.

I second that comment Jacob!! I'm from Canada, and I think Caruso goes down in history as one of the worst actors of our generation!! Poor deliveries, over-coaxed emotions, and cheezy one-liners make Horatio one of the most comical characters on television. However, it's this hillarious over-acting that makes me tune in every week, out of a sick obsession with the comedic content!!! The "Burn baby, burn" comment had me laughing so hard that I barely saw the rest of the episode... however we can't issue all blame upon the guy, I mean, SOMEBODY writes it for him, right? (Like traversing Miami traffic in less that 4 minutes so that the car bomb can explode on the beach.) So it's not just 'smartass Americans' that realize that it's that bad, it's a global unification of Caruso comedy!! International Smartasses Unite!!!

Okay, #10 I totally DISAGREE with. I don't know what exactly was meant by the smartass Americans comment but my family is from Portugal and let me tell you something about other countries-they believe all Americans are rich, live in big houses and have fast cars which is why the love this awful show. As far as i am concerned, at least Americans have some "reality" and know this is far beyond the truth. it's not saying much for the show if there own county thinks it's far fetched.

7# I so agree so everything you said about the show. I believe more people outside of America enjoy it than us smartass Americans. As far as the episode, I thought it was gonna be like Miami Vice Santeria case but I guessed wrong and episode didnt creep me out until the end showing the coffin at the beach.

People were commenting on the episode not really the show. At least that's what I get from it. I hated the episode. There is campy and then there is campy. It was beyond it. I like the show but this episode was stupid. Love seeing Frank Tripp. Wish they probe more into his character. They did in the begining but now not so much. I can do without the Delko and Wolfe characters. And yes-I do miss Speedle. They should have brought him back from the dead for the "scary" part of it-LOL.
I'm with Stephanie. Sometimes your mind is just little too beyond this at times. BTW: You are not old just mature Steph. I do love CSI Vegas is the best and that's the only thing I agree with Kira on. People can comment on the show if they watched it which these people have so what do care? Do you expect everyone to say how great the episode is even if they did not like it? Please......

Again, more replies that talk about how bad the show is, but yet you keep watching? Why why why if you hate a show so bad to continue to watch and complain.

I agree (in part) with Chris G. I think Caruso's acting makes for the best type of drinking games, although I'm too old for those, I'm not too old (35) for this show, unlike the "ancient" Stephanie.LOL.

I love CSI Vegas best because it is the best of the bunch bar none. NY is good too and much much better since they lightened the sets it up a bit. Miami... I don't even think of as part of the CSI family. Its camp and funny and they've got outlandish storylines... I say if you are looking for a strait crime/science drama, then watch the original CSI and stop coming here and bitching about this show... cause it ain't what you are looking for, and it will never be. Now deal with it people.

BTW, loved the episode. Thought the whole H driving the car to blow up in 4 minutes was CSI:Miami at is implausible best.... and then when he just walked away saying "burn baby burn." Laughed out loud. I said to DH during the episode "I wonder if David Caruso is even capable of a throw away line???" Umm probably not.

I assumed the coffin was brought by the woman as her "lucky charm." Loved Tripp and his golfing knowledge to help out the lab.
