Heroes: Hiros

Villains on Heroes
(S01E05)
For weeks it seems the voice-over that accompanies the previews for upcoming episodes of Heroes has promised "the heroes will have to work together" or something similar. This week Peter actually does get the call to "save the cheerleader, save the world." And, even if the heroes don't make a whole lot of progress in that direction, they are starting crossing paths more. When it doesn't take itself too seriously -- which, most of the time, it doesn't -- then Heroes is a lot of fun.

Most of the fun, this week is had in Vegas. We get plenty of confirmation about what kind of congressman Nathan Petrelli would be, starting when he tells Horn-Rim Glasses Guy (who either teleports, or is racking up some major frequent flier miles) that "when I find you I will kill you." No. Nathan's not exactly a work-within-the-system guy.

Not only can Nathan fly -- he can fly fast. I wonder if he's been practicing on the sly -- he seems to understand his power better than any of the others except Invulnerable Cheerleader. His barefoot landing may need a little more work, but you gotta admire his political skills: it's not every pol who can somehow come out a situation where's he's been video-recorded fornicating, and end up with an extra four million in his slush fund. He's cool in a crisis. I like him more now that's he's shown to be deeply Machiavellian, rather than just a weasel.

In fact, I'm starting to think Nathan might be the nuttiest hero of them all. What kind of candidate, so willing the sacrifice his brother to the press last week for the sake of his image, now strolls into a Nevada diner in pajama bottoms? Couldn't he just fly back to the hotel, and land on the roof? But it's worth it, to see Hiro and Nathan meet -- they're a much livelier duo than somber Peter and Mohinder -- or Peter and Junkie Painter for that matter. It's a little frustrating having to wait for Peter to discover things we already know -- who the cheerleader is, for instance. Besides, I'm getting a little tired of those midnight-blue drenched New York scenes.

Mohinder's sea-change from "the scientist seeking answers" to "the scientist who thinks this all bullshit" somewhere between episodes three and four is bugging me, and I was happy to see him disappear early tonight. I wish he would go home, like Peter suggests. Maybe he did actually, as I'm not sure what happened to him between the subway ride and Peter's doubling-back to the artist's loft after Hiro's space/time warp intervention.

NIki's still the most frustrating character for me: she should have caught on to her mirror-twin by now, yet somehow, according to what she tells police, anyway, she thinks her husband DL has been following her around, causing all her trouble. Huh? A confrontation with her other self seems to be promised for next week, but as is said over next week's previews, "each answer just brings more questions." At least the Heroes producers are willing to admit that!

I don't know how poor Parkman, the psychic-cop, fits in. Other than being the first series regular to get caught and wiped by Horn-Rims, he seems destined to flounder around trying to do good, and getting headaches. He was pivotal when he first appeared and became (only temporarily, I guess) involved by the FBI in the Sylar investigation. Now he is the only character who seems to be actively moving away from the center of the story. Unless his wife wishes for a trip to Las Vegas next, I wonder what will become of him. Hiro and Ando reunited

Not quite the mind-blowing climax of last week's episode, but I loved that Peter was there to relay future-Hiro's message when present-Hiro and Ando try the artist's number again. That must have blown Hiro's mind anyway ...

WEll, I'm glad i found this site. Let me be honest. This show is off the hook. To answer some concerns. NO Stan Lee wouldn't dare touch this show. Some these charcters can beat the dog mess out of stan lee charcters. For instance Peter inside the danger room with x-men guess who won that one. Peter is one of my favorite chacters of the show so far. My flaw with him is that someone without powers or insignigcant powers towards a fight can possibly beat him aka sharp shooter. Then again here's an issue. Don't anybody else but me notice that peter actually has more than one power. He day dream and regular dream about his own future. He seen that he the one that causes the explosing in the future. I honestly think that him being sick all the sudden is a side effect of his evolution, That when he exploses he will come out better. I mean he would have more powers than now plus more range for orginal power that we agree on.
my next favorite chacter of this show has to be sylar. his greed for power makes him so interesting. fact is he wants power to make sure hes the only one. remember he always wanted to be diffferent. he never liked his life. always wanted to change. super villian material enough for me.
theroys on peter brother becoming a bad guy. yes i agree. in fact since he was the only one to stand next to peter in the future vision of him exploing he might get more power as well. which would actually make him a better villian sorry flying around dont cut it if u can stop time. lol.
my next favorite chcarter is hiro. he knows there's limit to his powers already. which makes him one of the smartest charcters. in fact the show simi evoles around him. it really all depends what timer he in what time the show go be in. he can't directly change the pass. he tried that and failed. yet the present he can change. also the future hiro looks raw. i think he took time to go back in time to learn to fight and thats why he gets the sword plus to learn english. since he mention twice about dinosaurs i think in the future he go back to the past to fight a dinosaur to test his skills. like the picture the artist drew.
another chcater i'm like is micah. yes i think they picked him up from my wife and kids because his powers is being a child prodigy. what i mean is he's super smart. maybe not as smart as the my wife and kids version as anyone knows he knew anything, but close enough right now. i honestly think that eventually he would become there weapon maker, infomation man etc.... you know how smart people are.
all the other chcaters cool and got good roles like claire the super woverine. i would love to see her learn how to fight and cross over to xmen and destroy woverine. this girl can come back from the dead if her brain nearly in tact. micahs parents are cool too. too bad the husband dont believe theres a difference between mommy and jessica. the dude who can read minds good job. super cool hassen who barely talk. the best way to put it read wipe and erase ur ass. everybosy else i mention u next time tioll then have fun.

Hiro is the best!. I liked the way his explains he wants a ride from Nathan. Piii,piii...hehehe.

And what about Nathan being Sylar?. I think he knows he's got a lot of power. That's why he says: "if I see you again, i will kill you".

Maybe.

Love this show!

Saludos!

I disagree that she should necessarily have "caught on" to what is happening to her. If she has a split personality she may already know what is going on, but just have suppressed it. Her other personality obviously knows what is going on already.

Here's how I see them spinning her character. She had some childhood trauma that gave her a split personality. The secondary (ie: bad) personality is the only one with access to her powers probably because whatever trauma caused the split personality is related to some use of her powers (she broke daddy's arm when he tried to hit her or something). She seems to have some sort of superhuman strength and speed judging by her ability to manhandle and kill two large men.

I see the DL accusation as her way of getting the police to focus more on protecting her, but at the same time she could be suppressing the knowledge of what she has done and assume it could only be DL that is doing it.

Ummm....if future Hiro is from the future, and he knows that the cheerleader needs to be saved, he presumably knows where she lives. Why didn't he just tell Peter the specifics? What's the point of his cryptic clues?

For that matter, why didn't he just go back in time to wherever the cheerleader needed saving, and save her himself with his badass sword?

I am pondering about a few clues given in this particular episode: first, Future Hiro tells Peter "Be the one (or The One) we need" and I started wondering -- "as opposed to what?" Is there a possibility, that in the future, Peter's powers have 2 paths/possibilities: he can either combine everyone's power (kinda like power rangers [sorry for that reference] combining all their weapons; that is, once he hones his skills enough) to kick some "Sylar" ass, or could his powers also have the potential to turn him crazy, into something he does not want to be (remember that comment at Isaac's - he said "Is that me?" and Isaac said, "why would I draw you?" I have tried to figure out which painting Peter was pointing at, but either it is him, and he has some great good/bad role to play in the future, or (I have been thinking about the other possibility) that it is his father. These powers/stories seem to run in the family - so it is not completely out-of-nowhere to expect that the Nate and Peter's suicidal (and foreshadowed) dad was having problems because he was having some kind of power problems, and maybe he is not dead, but is "Sylar," which I think would be interesting, because that means Nate and Peter's dad and Mohinder's dad had some connection (I was thinking "Sylar" was the guy with some connection to Mohinder's dad, whose abode Mohinder visited previously, to find crazy stuff on the wall). Or it could be that "Sylar" is Peter's dad, and Peter's future will be determined by if he wants to side with the rest of the heroes or with his dad (a la Star Wars Luke Skywalker/Anakin Skywalker aka Vader). There are so many things that can spring on us on this show, and I just hope they don't make it boring. [By the way, I agree with Peter cutting his hair, so maybe the show is waiting for the thing that gives Peter a scar to show up and shear off some of it, as well as give him a scar. This is a thought that gives me pleasure].

I also wonder whether Niki can actually split herself into 2 (duplicates). That would be interesting since I think that would be a sign of her finally honing her powers and letting her other half out (she has been hiding her in the mirror, so to speak). But that possibility also makes me worried for the original Niki whose power seems to be perpetual confusion. I think they should probably have distributed interesting qualities between the two Nikis, e.g., the original can be the sexy one, and the Mirror Niki can be the crime fighting one, but they sort of gave sexy and crimefighting to Mirror Niki. The duplicate theory would also be interesting (to me at least) because Nathan really likes Mirror Niki, and Original Niki might be hung up on her ex. I don't know.

Silverfangs, that was exactly what I was going to ask! I TiVo'd this episode and watched it again last night, and my fiance and I were both stunned at how much resemblence there was between the "Hollow Out" guy and DL. But, that would make him uber-powerful, and it would make Micah the product of two heroes, refuting someone's previously mentioned theory. We already know he's really smart (or am I just getting that from his role on My Wife and Kids?), so why shouldn't he have some powers too?
Answers, please! And someone, please tell me that the only character I seem to really care about at this point, McCop ;), is going to be okay...

Is it just me but does the cop's wife remind you of Katie Holmes? It's creeping me out a little bit.

So is Niki's husband HRGG's brooding sidekick? I did not get to see the photograph really clear but it looks like him. Considering how the son keeps insisting that the dad is not guilty of whatever they're accusing him of, there's a big possibility that HRGG might not be evil. Maybe he's just another mad scientist trying to figure out how to engineer "special" people.

Kate, I totally agree with Nathan possibly being evil. It kind of seems possible since he already sold his brother out in public, tried to buy him off, lied several times to cover up the truth and his general disdain to his mother and his focus in being in a position of power.

I got the notion right after he stopped and asked Hiro if he knew if he won the election. He's always out for himself, family or friends be damned.

Just my two cents...

I have had a lot of fun reading all of your comments! I feel all warm and fuzzy knowing there are others out there that love the show. Even my son reminds me on Monday to watch :)

I agree with many of your points. Don't really have any comments that most of you haven't already mentioned.

I wonder if there's a translator power that Nathan and/or Peter might have so that Hiro's English came out better than he can normally manage?
