Friday Night Lights: Who's Your Daddy?
(S01E04) It's rivalry week as Dillon gets ready to go up against Arnett Mead. A bit of an interesting parallel there because while that will be a big game for the Panthers, the show has a big night next Monday. NBC is going to give Friday Night Lights a run in that post Heroes slot, and a (ratings) win is just what the show needs. But enough about that, this was another good episode. The writers continue to strike a nice balance between the four major story lines. Those being the football team, the Taylor family, Street, and Saracen. I really liked the Eric and Tami story tonight, with one little exception. We already know that Eric was Street's coach when he was younger. That kind of implies that they have been in the community for a while. How on earth could the "tradition" of the party at the coach's house have taken everyone by such surprise?
Forgiving that, it led to some good scenes between the two of them and illustrated just how much pressure Eric is under. The conversation in Tami's office was so telling of the communication problems that they are having. "I'm sorry that you're mad at me." That is the worst apology ever. It's good though, because it shows Eric is flawed. He wouldn't be nearly as interesting if he just did everything right on the first try.
We got a little progress on the Julie and Saracen story that has been being hinted at this week too. They are good together and I thought the scene after the dance recital played really well. The song reminded him of Jackson Pollock? Saracen is such a nervous guy you could almost see the wheels spinning trying to come up with anything to say. That story has a lot of potential. And this week it did serve as the catalyst for the best line of the night, from Eric "I think I told that kid to get our daughter in the back seat of a car."
Speaking of Saracen, Zach Gilford is doing a great job in the role. Seeing his dad, and the struggles taking care of his grandma, it wasn't a surprise when he lost it on the car. While it led to taking a beating, I think we'll see the further effects of the raid next week. Clearly, Voodoo becoming QB1 is not a sure thing. We can already see that Eric is looking for a way to convince himself to start Saracen. I think joining in with the team, as wrong as it was for them to do it, started to solidify him as a leader. And not giving up any names further cements that.
Which gets us to the team. We've already seen the clash between Voodoo and Smash, and it looks like there is plenty more where that came from. I really like Aldis Hodge as Voodoo. He just looks menacing. I'm curious to see how they work out the starter for the rivalry game. My best guess is that something comes up that gives Eric an excuse to not start Voodoo, yet still justify it to Buddy and the boosters. And goodness, if ever there were a character you loved to hate, it's Buddy Garrity. The guy is just smarmy.
And that brings us to the Lyla/Street/Riggins/Tyra quadrangle of teen angst. I liked the Street part of the story tonight with the murderball roomate giving him the kick in the ass that he needs. The only thing I find strange is that we don't see much of his parents around. I suspect that his recovery will start to move a little faster now so they can get him back into town to integrate into the other stories. I'm still undecided on the Lyla/Riggins stalker romance story. It's certainly not the best part of the story, but I'll roll with it for now to see where it goes.
And finally, on an odd note, was Grandma Saracen watching Sit and be Fit on television? Overall, another good episode, and it sets up a ton of stuff for the big Monday show. Looking forward to it. Hopefully a couple million of those Heroes fans will stick around to see what "that football show" is all about.
