Is Elisabeth Hasselbeck overreacting?

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 25th 2006 10:36AM
elisabeth hasselbeckElisabeth Hasselbeck, co-host of The View, took up some air time yesterday to rant about the name of a character on last week's Law & Order SVU that had a similar name to hers. On SVU, an 'Elizabeth Hassenback' was raped and murdered. Hasselbeck said she didn't see the episode but a friend told her about the similarities with the names and she was disturbed. Hasselbeck called one of the producers for SVU and asked about the names, which the producer said was a coincidence. Hasselbeck also said the producer was defensive and rude with her and essentially hung up on her when she tried to tell him that she didn't appreciate the victim's name because it made her feel unsafe. I admit that I flipped the TiVo back to see the victim's name because I thought it was Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She argues that's it's socially irresponsible to basically portray her as being raped and murdered. She also said she didn't want any more SVU actors on The View, as if she has control over that and they actually had anything to do with it!

So... is Elisabeth Hasselbeck overreacting? Or, is SVU really taking a nasty swipe at her?

WHO THE HELL DOES ELISABETH HASSELBECK THINK SHE IS? She was a stupid contestant on Survivor and now she is on "The View". She is a nobody and who in God's name gives a crap if the name is simliar to hers. There are so many "real people" that these shows have used their name son and you don't see us calling them up to complain. Get over yourself, you not dead, you weren't raped and shut the F$%# up! There is more to life than hurting your stupid little reputation on a talk show! I wonder what you would do if something really bad happened to you Elisabeth! BTW, she is completely brain dead and adds nothing special to the show. They should fire her for being such a moron!

It's pathetic. They use lots of names that everyday people have, should everyone with similar names be offended.

"Jane Doe", nice or sorry.

I agree Lizzy has had her day. She gets hyper over every little thing. Why do they keep her? That show needs new views!

Hate her!!!! Think she's way too sensitive and an moron. She's not as special as she think she is. She didn't and still doesn't deserve to be a co-host on that show. I say get rid of her. This isn't news!!!!!!!

I think Elizabeth is overreacting. How many other names have been used on the show that belong to other people? I don't hear anyone else complaining. Just forget about it and not make such a big deal over it. If she hadn't complained about it alot of people would have never noticed.

Jason, and Jane Doe, you have my sympathy. :-)
An empirical search turned up many Hasselbecks,
slightly fewer Hassenbecks, but no Hassenbacks,
at least in NY state. I've lost track of all the scurrilous "Dons" on Law and Order, although they
were mostly Italian-Americans.

The name is not the same people, and please remember that is where it ends. I mean there are no other similarities. The character in question was not an overpaid, undertalented talk show co-host, nor was she married. So what is the problem?
My question is what are the writers supposed to do? Should every fictional victim just be called Jane Doe?
If the name they used belonged to my wife, or my sister would the View be giving us air time to gripe? No, they would chalk us up as loons, pat us on our heads, and send us on our way. This is just just 'special' treatment for a 'famous' person who needs to feel self important. I hate to breat it to all of you who are coming out in support of this looniness but I didn't even know who this silly ditz was until I ran across the video on IFILM.

Yawn! SVU has had many dozens of victims over the years with names similar to or the same as real live people. This is the first time I've heard of anyone having a major hissy-fit over it. Elisabeth Hasselbeck must be leading a pretty pathetic life at the moment if she feels such a need to stir up a firestorm over something as trivial as a fictional character's name.

Get a real life and get over it!!! SVU is a good show. The plots have a strong feeling of relevance. Something I can't say for Hasselbeck. I believe SVU has made many people more aware of the feelings of victims of crimes and their humanity. It takes the crimes from being statistics on the news and gives them a personal feel.

It's a shame the producers of The View don't seem to be able to imbue Hasselbeck with a more human and less cartoon-like persona.

i was so mad that i emailed elisabeth. to think they "attacked" her because of her political beliefs is self-centered and...um, stupid? yea, really stupid. they have a former Republican as a recurring guest on the show.

she's crazy. in ur blurb, tho, u should have mentioned that rosie o'donnel said the show was an hour of mysogyny. that's just disgusting. it's arguably the show on television that empowers women the most. at any rate, it doesn't hate them.
ugh.
