Nip/Tuck: Conor McNamara

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Oct 25th 2006 12:54AM

Joely Richardson as Julia McNamara on Nip Tuck.(S04E08) I'm really loving this season. Might be the best one since the first. The whole exploration of the McNamara family and their issues is far more compelling than any of the Quentin/Carver stuff. It's not that I disliked last season, I just think this kind of material works better for Nip/Tuck.

This was a really well crafted episode. It brought back a wonderful character in Mrs. Grubman and we got a rare glimpse into Sean's childhood. Plus, the surgery du jour was none other than young Conor McNamara, something that's been causing tension between Sean and Julia since the child's birth. On top of that, Peter Dinklage was back and Mo'Nique guest starred as Mrs. Grubman's sassy live-in nurse. Sounds like a winning combination right?

Well it was... at least I thought so. I'll talk about Mrs. Grubman first because it was incredibly sad. She finally came back to McNamara/Troy. It's been a full two years since the stroke and she's recovered almost fully with the help of Evetta (Mo'Nique). However, she's come to enlist Christian's help to make her look her best for her funeral. Mrs. Grubman was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer and it's spread pretty much everywhere. Despite the sad note, there were still plenty of laughs. Especially when Evetta called Mrs. G "shit pants." Comic gold right there.

After her initial visit with Christian, we found out that Mrs. G was almost a back-up singer for Burt Bacharach. She could have had quite the singing career. She finally gave in a few days later back at the practice. Christian went to get a botox shot and when he turned around, she was gone. Her final scenes were touching. We got to see her actually singing with Burt Bacharach (I'm now convinced this show can cast anyone) while Christian operated on her corpse.

But the funeral was very telling of the life she lived. No one came. She was vain, kind of an ass, and no one really liked her. Christian came to that conclusion when he eulogized her to an empty house. Fortunately, she did leave all her money to McNamara/Troy in a fund "for people who need a little work, but don't want to pay for it." She's still worried about body image, even in the afterlife. Rest in peace Mrs. Grubman.

Moving on, we got a shocking revelation about Sean as a child and it shed light on why he became a plastic surgeon as well as why he's been so insistent that Conor be operated on as soon as possible. Sean was born with a cleft lip and he had it until he was maybe 6 or 7. His mother finally had Sean operated on, but not before she defied her husband and ultimately broke up the family. Sean saw himself in his new son in far too many ways.

The ironic thing is that Sean's strong feelings about the operation have pushed Julia into Marlo's arms. They kissed and I don't think the sexual tension between mother and male nanny is going away soon. In an attempt to not break up his family, Sean may be doing just that. I did enjoy the surgery scene, cutting back and forth from Conor to Sean as a child and seeing them both go through their respective operations. It was a cool way to tie it together.

Now I had nothing wrong with this little bit of back-story, only that it's awfully convenient. Do you think this was something that was known about Sean when the character was first imagined or was this childhood characteristic supplied simply to tie in with Conor's problem? A bit of a chicken or the egg question. Thoughts?

I got the impression when Christian was at Ms. Grubman's funeral that he identified with her. The same as nobody was at her funeral and she was disliked for being an ass, that's what Christian fears. He's like her in that he's disliked but on the inside he's a good guy (for the most part). I think this season is showing Christian as someone who is trying to understand himself better.

Im prolly the only one who enjoyed of the suspense of "The Carver" last season but I agree that this season has been emotionally skinned deep than I thought it would. This was the type of episode that season needed even though it lines were crappy but it sells.

It's been hit/miss on Nip/Tuck this season, as in the prior three seasons.

But you've got to love the way this show pushes the boundaries and deals with deep personal issues. The show could have been about rich women getting tit jobs, but it has delved much deeper than I ever expected.

Nip/Tuck remains as one of the few must-see shows on TV, at least for me.

This show hasn't been good for a LONG time. They needed to overhaul their writers when "The Carver" storylines got mixed in. I gave up on this show when Joan Rivers came on to push Julia's sperm-based product during season 3. Very realistic, folks. What's wrong with those of you still watching? This needs to be aired in tandem with Days Of Our Lives. I figure it's only a matter of time before Christian is implanted with Satanic hairplugs by The Carver's "evil twin", and Sean (who is brainwashed by Scientologists) must decide if he is to continue praying to Xenu or return to his practice to perform the first-ever exorcism surgery, thus saving McNamara/Troy for season five.

I find this season to be a huge comedown. There should be more about Matt and Kimber-- they are important characters with whom we have bonded but we hardly see them anymore. Instead we get Julia's thoroughly unconvincing affair with the male nanny, who has a totally unrealistic hold on her. And by the way, remember Julia killed a woman at the airplane crash last year? What happened to that? What happened to her relationship with her own mother? I will hang in there because they've earned my loyalty from previous years, but I hope the writers regain focus on people we care about.

I have to agree with you Jonathan that this season has been pretty good. the feeling that i can't wait for the next nip/tuck episode is back, a feeling that i didn't have at all watching those boring none-Carver related "filler" episodes they threw in there last year...which was such a letdown consider how the suppose-to-be-shocking conclusion ended.
Although this hasn't been as good as the first or the second season IMO, i think it's a much better season than the last. and the style and the music are all very nip/tuck still. the big problem i have with this season is the whole Christian's gay exploration...very tacky and unnecessary, and the whole Matt/Kimber storylines...it's like they have too many characters that they couldn't really tell all the stories.
The weird feeling that struck me the most this season is how i really don't like Sean or Christian, they seem to be more cocky, more annoying, more self center than ever. but hey, it's nip/tuck, it's okay for the main characters to be unlikable.
This episode was pretty great in that there was no James/Michelle story here. it's great to take a break from that for this somewhat heartwarming and more emotional episode....see guys, nip/tuck doesn't always need sex to make a good episode. I'm sure gonna miss Mrs. Grubman though, she's been a favorite character of mine since first season...
I'm optimistic on where this season is heading and it's gonna be interesting to see how they're going to wrap up everything....speaking of wrapping things up, are they going to completely ignore whatever Matt/Cherry left off in last season finale?

I have to completely disagree with the entire tone of this season. This season has made me come to the conclusion that the writers are 1) on a ton of drugs, or 2) have an ongoing office wager on who can come up with the most absurd storyline, or both.

The veil has completely lifted for me this season. From the bad writing, bad acting, cheesy editing, cheesy music choices, and hot button issues. Not to mention bad casting. There is absolutely no chemsitry between Julia and male nanny.

It's infuriating I can't stop watching becuase I was such a fan.
