Supernatural: Simon Said
(S02E05) What did John whisper to Dean in the hospital? That's the big question. This week they teased us by showing that clip again in the opening, hinting that maybe we'd get the answer. In the end, we still don't know, but the Winchester boys did get some more information on the children. Despite leaving viewers wanting in that regard, this was another good episode. A crazy opening with the murder/suicide vision. He was so matter of fact. It's all ok. It's all ok. I was happy to see that it led Sam and Dean back to the ROADHOUSE. It did strike me as a little odd that Dean didn't want to go there. Worrying about a few other hunters and what they might think doesn't sound like the Dean we know. It's the beginning of an odd role-reversal for Sam and Dean this week.
Jo hustling at 10 Point Buck was interesting. I'm hoping that means that we are going to see her outside of the bar, with a shotgun in hand, in the not too distant future. The ROADHOUSE crew is a great addition to the show. It's always going to be the Winchester story, but having some characters that we know gives the show a much better flow. Just going from town to town and meeting all new people each week doesn't carry the overall story nearly as well.
With the help of Ash, Dr. Badass if you prefer, they track the vision to Oklahoma. Was there something more to Jo's offer to help? She seemed awfully curious that they had Ash searching the nursery fire profile. Is it possible that Jo might be one of the children with abilities? Oh, and we also learned that Dean shouldn't sing. The R.E.O. Speedwagon scene was cute.
They sold Andy as the killer pretty well having him shake hands with the doctor. When he touched Dean before taking the car I thought we were going to find that he had to touch people to be able to control them. Not so much, as we learned later, but it was nice misdirection. I saw the doctor/bus collision coming, but dang. That was still a pretty nasty death. Did you catch the shoe flying through the air?
This is where the Sam and Dean role reversal really comes out. Sam is usually the voice of reason, wanting to make doubly sure about everything, but here he's all set to go after Andy. Dean on the other hand doesn't think Andy is a killer. The visions, the demon, and all that those things entail are really starting to do a number on Sam. The 'truth' scene with Andy was good. A clever way to get Dean's feelings out without having to have him let his guard down.
The twin explanation for the murders was good as a story, but even better for what it gave us in the bigger picture. It poked some holes in the nursery fire profile. Andy and Webber's birth mother wasn't killed by the demon, but Andy's adoptive mother was. Webber's adoptive mother wasn't murdered, but he still has powers. That opens up a whole world of possibilities for who could be one of them. It's also interesting that the demon appeared to Webber in a dream.
Webber also foreshadowed something I think we will see with Sam in the future. He had been practicing with his special ability and managed to hone it. As we move on, I suspect Sam will begin to get more and more control of his visions as well. I'm also wondering if we will see Andy again. This could be the beginning of a team of sorts. Possibly an eventual showdown with the demon where the boys bring in some help.
The final scene at the ROADHOUSE echoed the earlier scene where Jo was so eager to help. Ellen sent her out of earshot while she talked to the boys about the nursery fires, and the children with abilities. Maybe I am just reading too much into that, but there is something going on with her. I guess we'll just have to wait to find out.
