Dexter: Love American Style

Dexter finds that a semi end of the world would actually be better for him, being the only person left on the planet, not having to hide anymore. But wouldn't that leave him kinda bored? I mean, he'd have nobody left to kill.

Last week I mentioned that the best thing about this show is Dexter's past relationship with his father. I take that back -- it's the second best thing. The best thing about this show is Dexter's voice-overs. Sometimes you already know what Dexter's thinking in the back of his mind, the mind he keeps hidden from the rest of the world. Though it's always good to actually hear it.

Gotta love how Dexter calls his kills his "personal projects." Oh, if they only knew how handy Dexter really is.

Dexter's relationship with his father grows more complex with each episode. His methods for Dexter's "rehabilitation" into society is questionable, but his love for his son and his family seems unquestionable. There are times though when Harry will waste no time in reminding Dexter than he's not normal, that he has to work to be normal. And as we see in present day, Dexter clearly knows and accepts that he is not, in fact, normal.

But what Dexter's father did teach him was to be careful -- to be sure. This is something Dexter never seems to waver on, so he knows he's after the right person. You could say he's almost more methodical about being careful about who he chooses than what he actually does to them in the end.

So now we know one piece of evidence about the Ice Truck killer: Menthol lozenges. It also seems like the killer is male from what Tucci said of the clearing throat. I think this killer is much too smart to be making such a blaring mistake, to give away such an obvious piece of evidence. Don't be surprised if this is just setting someone else up in the end.

Is the ultimate endgame for this show to see Dexter get a normal life? Perhaps. We're definitely seeing him make an effort to get somewhere with his relationship with Rita, but will it ever really go where he'll be satisfied?

Quote of the episode:
Dexter: "Maybe if I don't blink my eyes will tear up."

I think the ITK is Dexter's sister. My roommate and I did the rewind with the dvr and her eyes are the closest match. Plus Dexter is constantly commenting about about her not having a life outside work. They found her cigarette at the crime scene, which could have been from before and not while they were on the crime scene. They would automatically assume that she had just brought it into the crime scene because she was a "newbie" and messing up. She also would be in a perfect position to know things from Dexter's life. Our theory is that she actually knew what Harry was up to when he was training Dexter.

Just my two cents

@Diana

I believe that Dexter didn't have enough time to completely dissect the coyote's wife, because he didn't plan on taking care of two "projects."

Judging by the trailer for next week's episode, whomever was observing from the car trunk (the Lt. - dun dun dun) was in a position to alter Dexter's "crime scene" and create some suspicion for the cops.

Interesting show, but I wonder if the book reveals who the ITK is. That would be cheating, I suppose.

My office mate (who tapes it for me since I don't have cable) thinks the eye in the trunk belonged to the wife of the "coyote" (the immigrant smuggler). She says Dexter mentioned having a different fate for her, so maybe he put her in the trunk to die? That wasn't my take on it though - I thought it was the ITK, though I couldn't tell the sex. And if Dexter is the ITK, how could he be watching from the car trunk at the same time he was dumping body parts on the ocean? I love this show!

I live in Kansas. The big news of the year is catching the BTK killer. He struck a plea deal, so the much anticipated details and/or confession never came out. However, he consistently spoke of his victims as objects or "projects." The script is right on the money with psychopathic dialog.

Don´t forget the flying head!
Dexter maybe has a split personality but someone else had thrown the head.

Des -- I thought the very same thing, That Dexter's the ITK. But then who took is picture with the Polaroid camera at the scene with Tucci?

I say the ITK is actually Dexter himself. Man vs Man. He's focused so entirely on himself being empty and unable to feel, but, as most guys discover the hard way, when they tie up with a girl "because everybody's doing it" the end up snagging up. Dexter's recognizing his feelings for GF and ESPECIALLY after the blowjob he got, he's beginning to tap into his humanness over his empty serial killerness. The catalyst is the girlfriend and his bond developed.

He's been living behind a mask his whole life, seen clearly in the flashbacks...and ITK is baiting Dexter, not in a sharing of "we're a lot alike" it's Dexter's hidden personality breaking thru and exposing Dexter to himself piece by piece - hence the body parts.

Nobody can know him that intimately and him not know them or who they are. All the flashbacks are with his family, father mostly...but he's always the one in them and ITK wouldn't have any way to know what he did when he was 11. Only Dexter's hidden, repressed "other" would know it, and now it's surfacing - being freed by the catalyst of emotion.

That's why he didn't kill anyone in #4 - he made a choice. That's human. But now in #5, he's arguing, confused, distracted, and he slipped up...messed up.

All the ITK's MO is the same as Dexter's....and he's never concerned anybody's "out there" watching him. He's never questioned it. I can't believe the script writers would be that sloppy. He's not addressing it for a reason.....it's part of the twist that it's himself...Dexter is the ITK....

Crime scenes spotless...even tho they're outside, or in curious locations, no evidence. Dexter covers his scenes wall to wall in plastic for the same reason. ITK decapitates. Dexter decapitates.

What better plot stress than having your own sister figure out the one she's hunting is her brother....and if it's not Dexter, my next call is that it is the sister - she's too dopey, too one dimensional and suddenly insightful but don't forget, she comes from the same family, she may have always known, and this is her "helping" her brother and helping herself rise to her father's position on the force...

Didn't it seem that the eye in the trunk seemed to resemble Dexter's boss (the Lieutenant) who's always flirting with him? I forgot what her name is, but she's the CO who's always giving Dexter's sister a hard time.

I had to rewind that scene over several times to verify that eye. But I'm just guessing...

Great episode. I love the way this show has taken the first Dexter novel and fleshed it out and expanded both the story and characters. The only thing missing from the book, is the explaination of his Need, and the way he talks about his Dark Passenger. They need to add this to the show.

(Keith - Do you know how many episodes Sho will be running for this "season"?)
