More "Studio 60 is going to get canceled" talk

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Oct 29th 2006 1:33PM

Matthew PerryInteresting article about Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip over at FOX News by Roger Friedman. However, before I go any further, let me preface all this by saying that this is the first time I've ever read anything on FOX News and found myself nodding in agreement. It's an odd sensation.

Anywho, Friedman makes all the points we've already heard time and time again about Studio 60. The staple being "Who cares about rich people with drug habits making a TV show?" Not many apparently. Regardless two things stood out for me in this article. Friedman praises Matthew Perry in his role as Matt Albie, something I feel I haven't read enough of. Perry has officially grown out of the Chandler Bing shell and whatever Studio 60's future may be, Perry seems poised to have a career where he's known for more than just Friends. He's definitely the reason I'm still tolerating the show.

The second point Friedman made that struck me was that according to an insider (always reliable, those insiders), the Studio 60 cast has already been telling friends and family that the show is a lost cause. Hence Friedman's presumptive article title about cancellation being imminent. While it seems like the show is heading in that direction, more scripts were ordered. So who knows what could happen. There's no reason why Studio 60 can't bounce back. Although it might take some help. Time-slot change anyone? I still haven't given up on the show, but the feelings I had about it over the summer before it began and what I feel about it now... night and day.

[Thanks to Porchland, erroneous_nick, and Jeffsmith for pointing out Friedman's article to us.]

Wow - I must be pretty much alone in this - but, I really like this show and will miss it if it is canceled. It reminds me of Sport's Night and I cried when it ended.

I love the show. It's writing is crisp, the characters real and alive, and it keeps me interested. More television should be like this.

I too don't think the show will last much longer, although I'll stick with it to the end because I've grown attached to the cast.

I don't understand why anyone thought a show about the behind the scenes goings on of an SNL-type show would be interesting. There are too many story lines going on each week and the show is so disorganized. With West Wing there may have been 2-3 topics each week and they were wrapped up at the end of the show (usually) - and then a single continuing topic. Also, I find it hard to believe that the network president and owning company CEO (e.g., GE) would be involved in the show at all.

Anyway ... I want my Jeb Bartlett and West Wing!!!

Like Arc Angel, I too am curious, after browsing through all these bashings, if I am really watching the same show. The message of the show is aimed at filling the void in modern "prime time" network cable TV. It's intelligent, politically charged, witty, and provocative. It's the closest thing we have to a realistic glimpse inside the chaotic entertainment industry. So often viewers forget that all those characters we see on TV and in the movies are real people. Studio 60 offers a fascinating (albeit sometimes exaggerated) look at those real people and the exhaustive, frustrating and often hysterical process that is responsible for generating the entertainment that we have come to rely on 7 days a week. It's true that this process is, in reality, often times more entertaining than the final product.

The ONLY valid point that has been made in criticism of the show is that the characters, and the relationships among them, are underdeveloped. Sorkin should, indeed, start focusing more on that aspect of the show and less on the actual "show within a show." We've started to see glimpses of this in the past few episodes and I hope that it will continue.

If the show is cancelled by NBC, Sorkin should, as suggested, pack up and take his ideas to HBO. It seems these days that only the people who are willing to pay for good TV, are the ones who truly appreciate it. Sadly, it may be true that the American public really is too dumb to understand Studio 60.

I love the show, maybe I'm old enough to understand about it.
It's not only about a TV show, but I guess you guy got that, didn't you?
i guess it is true what people say, Sorkin is to smart for TV, at least for a lot of the people who watch it!
I hope they stick to Studio 60 and push them a bit. I know it has potential.
Go watch the nine, jericho or Lost, that's what America is loving, man!! you get 3 show with the same format and you love them, you get a show that it smart, original and different and you hate it.
By the way, Ugly Betty, anyone?? Give a break, GOD!!!

Quite simply, Studio 60 is probably the most intelligent show curently running. And since we all know how extremely unintelligent the mass majority of the viewing audience is, I am not surprised at the low ratings and the lack of interest from most.

With that said, once again an absolutely wonderful show may be making a significantly premature exit from our airwaves, just like Sports Night (probably the best comedy on television at the time and the best writen show since "Soap").

I am saddened by this and by the comments I have read here. Just another notch in the belt of the decline of our society.

I guess I can look forward to the mid-season replacement in the time slot... probably a show about people running into walls or falling off couches while sleeping. The viewing public love that kind of thing...

I love this show. I think the writing is great. The actors are great as well. One of the best parts of the show for me is how believeable the friendship between Danny and Matt is. The biggest problem is the time slot. NBC has scheduled it behind Heroes, which is a terrible lead in for this particular show. This is a drama that needs a real shot.

Everyone I work with is in love with Studio 60. We get together to watch a taped copy of it on Tuesdays during lunch, even though most of us watched it the night before. I really hope NBC gives it the cahnce it deserves!

Well this is interesting...
Lot's of people hate this show. I'm not one of them.
Of course, I'm always fighting with the fact that we could use a whole lot less Dancing with the Stars, and a whole lot more smart dramas.
When you live in a world with four different Law and Orders and three different CSI's, people like me are pleading for a show about something more than cops, lawyers, and doctors.

So, I say give it some legs. Sorkin's a master writer, and while I don't think (as a writer) that means we should bow down and worship the ground he walks on... that would really help for me...

But this isn't about me, and Sorkin needs room to grow.
All the best shows in Television get cancelled. Unless of course they are on HBO or a fledgling network that's desperate to try anything (Yes, I'm looking at you Fox with Simpsons and X-Files neither of which would have lasted on any other station).

We pull the plug faster on shows than democrats holding the extention cord to Terry Schiavo's respirator.
(Okay, so I'm with the democrats on this one)

But the metaphor could hold a little. Let me make this mad suggestion.
If you're a network and you have the balls to put a show on. Have the balls to keep it on three years. If you're going to mess up...mess up big. After three years decide if you're going for seven.
And then bury it in peat moss if you like. But don't let it go any longer.
Just my thoughts,
Jack

Oh sure, let's through the baby out with the bath water! Studio 60 has great elements and should be given a chance. If you're not enjoying it, change the channel. Let those who can have faith in the talents of the creators and wonderful actors of this show give it a chance to evolve. People today are too quick to throw in the towel. A little bump in a relationship or marriage, they quit and move on. It took alot to create this show, GIVE IT A CHANCE! This is how we ended up with reality TV. Shows like Chicago Hope were pushed out by Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. There's no question "No Child Left Behind" has contributed to the dumbing down of America, let's keep good writing on the air and give the creators a chance to find their genius. Haven't you ever started a great book, found it "hard to get into" but once you did it was wonderful. Life is NOT a perfect "10". A show can improve, give it a chance or YOU move on. Whatever you do, don't just sit at your computer writing about entertainment (remember that's what this is) Go Out And VOTE!
