Heroes: Better Halves

Save the cheerleader, save the world.
(S01E06)
What a minute. Did all this stuff actually happen in only one episode? I don't know where to start. Even Isaac, the mopey artist, seems to be charged-up and awake. Maybe he feels a little better now that he's seen Peter manifest paint-the-future powers of his own, and thinks he is not so crazy after all.

Just when you think Horn-Rim Glasses Guy might actually be okay, and that evil is just his day job, he sets up daughter Claire to meet her "bio-parents." I guess there's no good reason to call him Horn Rim and not Mr. Ben net, or even "Claire's dad." But HRGG is more fun, and sounds more mysterious. As he truly does love and worry about Claire, he makes a great complex villain.

9th Wonders! The reunion turns out to be just an act. Or is it? I thought I detected a look of regret, or concern, on the woman pretending to be Claire's birth-mom, when HRGG congratulates the couple on a deception-well-done, afterward in the driveway. I think we will see more of this woman since she's played by the somewhat well-known Karri Turner of JAG. The deception doesn't hold anyway, as Claire's adopted Mom, who appears less heavily-medicated tonight than previously, mentions a slight chromosome problem Claire had at birth. Oops.

Now we know why Eden, the "antique-bookstore clerk" and Brooklyn neighbor of the Suresh's, was so comfortable handling a gun when she first met Mohinder. I absolutely did not see this twist coming, but I imagine a lot of viewers did. Eden's banter back and forth on the phone with Horn-Rims was pretty good: she casually brings him up to speed on all the new superheroes she's gathered intel on. "Cool," comments HRGG. At least it's cool until he hears the bit about saving the cheerleader.

I'm still annoyed with Mohinder, especially his flat-out dismissal of Peter's story last week, not to mention his leaden voice-overs. No, I take that back. Mohinder's closing voice-over tonight seemed especially relevant, as it played over Niki, who's sprawled out on the carpet after losing the battle with DL: "Evolution is an imperfect and often violent process. Morality loses its meaning. The question of good and evil reduced to one simple choice: survive or perish."

Niki in the mirrorThe Bennet's of Odessa Texas, and the Petrelli Brothers of New York, now have to take a back seat: Niki's family is definitely demonstrating the most twisted dynamics at this point. Ripping apart gangsters and "bitch-ass" poker-players is one thing, but framing D.L. and sending him to prison? That's cold. D.L.'s a good dad to Micah it seems. Mirror-twin finally picks this time to reveal herself and speak directly to Niki and she unloads quite a tale. Why does Mirror Twin want to keep D.L. away from Micah so much that she'd frame him to do it?

I'm glad Ando will be sticking around. One of my favorite lighter scenes this week is when Hiro, in the middle of making light-saber noises, explains the nature of a "hero's quest" to his friend, saying: "You don't have to have powers to be a hero." Present Hiro's smart enough, by the way, to know why Future Hiro, needed to be cryptic and go through Peter to deliver his message. It's refreshing when characters on a show are as smart as the audience. Who better than a comics and sci-fi fan to understand the delicacy of the time-space continuum?

i think Claire(the cheerleader) must not get killed is because she can't die unless her brain gets messed with. I think Sylar steals other heroes' ablities by eating their brains and if he eats her brain and takes her powers he can't die and will destroy the world. Just a guess though.

Just because there are two black people on one show, doesn't mean that they are the same black person. DL and minderaser are completely different people in terms of their eyes, head shape and psyquie.

While minderaser may also have invisibility powers, DL definitely doesn't have it. Otherwise, DL would just erase Niki's memories.

This show is great, if not, by having a black man married to a white woman, and showing kissing between an Indian man and a white woman. How often does that happen on TV. Most shows are still very white.

I am going to go out on a limb with two theories:

Could Mohinder's father be Sylar? As stated abouve all he had were ashes.

Is Mohinder the lizard a shape shifting hero? There seems to be too many references to the lizard for him not to be important. Another possibility for Silar?

I am going to go out on a limb here but....

Could Mohinder's father be Sylar? Perhaps trying to understand himself is what started his whole quest. As someone said all he had were ashes to prove his father's death (this put's an image in my head from a Murphy Brown epi where Frank's ashes got the dust buster treatment ;))

Again out on a limb but could the lizard Mohinder be a shape shifter?

Okay, no doubt about it, this episode is much slower than some of the others, but I do think it reveals some important info that will become apparent later on in the show. For example, Hiro and Ando being in the broom closet while Nikki slaughters all those in the adjoining room. I think it is important when Hiro mentions a "do-over"....

Also, the revelation about Claire's chromosomal abnormality. Perhaps that is how HRG guy got started on the whole mutant kick. Like others, I believe that HRG guy is not really evil. I think he is doing a survey of what powers are available and then how they can be exploited at a later date. He seems to show genuine concern over Claire (who thankfully wasn't in cheerleader uniform again!) I can't wait to see where his character goes from here.

Mohinder will be back - that was obvious from Eden's (?) actions. Perhaps they will set him up and he will have to return, maybe to "rescue" her from something terrible. Another poster mentioned that maybe Mohinder's father wasn't really dead and working with HRG guy. I like that idea - I mean all Mohinder had was his ashes. It would be a good plot twist.

I found it strange that in the closing shot, they had Nikki's right shoulder covered. Isn't that the side with tattoo? I guess by filming it that way you can't be sure if she is dead, her evil mirror-psycho chick is dead or both. I really don't care for Nikki's character but I think unfortunately, her plotline is not finished and if anything will be more prominent.

I was surprised that DL wasn't the mind-eraser guy. I mean, he could have worked since he seems to be able to put his hand (and the rest of him, I guess) through just about anything. If he could try to stop Nikki's heart, then why can't he reach into the minds of other people? Curious about Micah - if he knew Nikki's secret, I wonder what else is in that little boy-genius head of his?

Another poster mentioned the regret on the face of Claire's "bio-mom". I think they were right and she will come back into the picture. Maybe she knows who Claire's real parents are or can help her understand what is going on. My question is: why is Claire so important?? Why would saving Claire save the world? I really interested to read what other people think about this....any ideas on why Claire is so uberimportant????

To #12/Ryan: nope, DL is not the mindsweeper working with HRG. I thought so too until I saw Leonard Roberts as DL. Definitely not the same person.

The big questions about Peter's power are:

* How close does he have to be to mimic someone else's power?

* How long after he is no longer close to that person will he retain the power?

For example, what happens if he is near his brother and starts to fly, but his brother does not. At some distance from his brother, does the power conk out and he falls, or is it time based?

I think Peter actually said his powers only seem to work when he's around others that have them. Which caused Mohinder to look at him funny and Peter add something like "does that sound as crazy as I think?"

I don't believe Peter ever said anything more than that.

Also, wikipedia has some interesting information that's probably as accurate as IMDB stuff (insert grain of salt here).

Oh I guess I must have missed that part (when Peter said he could tap into others powers). I even discussed it with my husband and he must have missed it too because he didn't mention that Peter just came out and said he had that ability. So when did Peter say it then? I like to think we're pretty observant when it comes to television but that one definitely passed me by.

We do have a new puppy who likes to pee on our carpet when we're giving our attention to the TV instead of him, so its very possible we were both distracted at that moment! :)
