The Nine: All About Eva
(S01E05) As you can tell from the episode title, tonight's episode focused exclusively on Jeremy. Ha! Just kidding. But it didn't really focus completely on Eva either. There was also plenty about the Lucas/Randall relationship, Franny, Kathryn and the baby, and the new Odd Couple, Nick and Egan."Can one divorced man and one soon to be divorced man share an apartment, without driving each other crazy?"
Franny is upset that Ricky is having such a hard time at school, so she goes to Jeremy for help. What sort of help, Jeremy isn't sure.
Meanwhile, Kathryn finds out something about Eva that shocks her (and me, actually). She not only had a police record, she actually might have had something to do with Randall and Lucas being in the bank that day, via her ex-boyfriend Carlos. He admits he was asking Eva for money before the bank robbery, but had nothing to do with it. Now that adds a whole new dimension to the story. Nick is haunted too, by certain ways Eva acted in the bank, and also in general by the fact that he really liked her and hoped for a second date (he even promised her one when they were locked up in the bank). Nick isn't buying it at first, but is starting to. Kathryn threatens Carlos by saying if there's anything he's holding back, she'll make sure he spends the rest of his life in jail.
After a little detective work, Nick and Kathryn discover that Eva actually might have had something to do with it after all, especially after they find out she changed her plane ticket and was going to leave for Phoenix the next day. Franny's explanation for this? Eva changed it for Nick, hoping he would go out with her, an explanation I don't really follow. But this is the explanation, I guess, because both Nick and Kathryn realize they were wrong about Eva - she had nothing to do with it.
Why did Lucas give Randall a piece of his liver? Brotherly love, or did he need Randall alive to take the "bad guy" role in the court trial that is coming up? Looks like the latter was a big reason, as they now have separate attorneys. I think the whole "Wonder Twins" thing is over between them, eh?
Lizzie tells everyone that she is pregnant, and Jeremy corrects her that "they" are pregnant. Franny says she doesn't mind, because their one time together was just that, a one-time thing. But Jeremy knows that they are important to each other and there's something between them.
Egan is now rooming with Nick, and has bought new cowboy boots to go along with his new outlook on life.
The bank - and Malcolm - are being sued by the guard's widow. Malcolm goes to see her and finds out that the bank offered her only $43,000 as a settlement, even though her husband worked there for 12 years. Hell, I'd sue too. And there's a nice moment where Malcolm sincerely says to her "I didn't realize it was that little." A lot of shows would have just had the wife leave the scene without the other person explaining that to her, so that was a nice touch. Malcolm has an ace up his sleeve - several e-mails he sent to corporate for more security and more cameras, all turned down. The bank isn't happy he seems to be going against them in the case.
Felicia is called to the stand by the defense. And she admits she went to see Lucas in jail, because she has a feeling that they are "connected," and that he might have saved her from Randall in some way.
I can imagine that some people bailed on this show after the first hour, when the whole bank robbery scenario was done with. And that's a shame. One, because the bank robbery really isn't over, not in what these people are going through and not even in the episodes themselves - there are plenty of flashbacks to those 52 hours. And those scenes are incredibly tense, filmed differently, and are a great change from the way the rest of the episodes go. I know someone who watched the first episode and was fairly intrigued by it, though it was a little bit too "soap opera" for him (I understand what he means but disagree completely). Too bad he's not watching it anymore, because this is really well done. I want to know what happens to these characters, and the twists and turns and emotions have me completely interested.
But the biggest twist in this episode, one I didn't see coming? Josh Malina (West Wing, Sports Night) is one of the attorneys! Woo-hoo!
