Project Runway's CD release

by Julia Ward, posted Nov 3rd 2006 1:07PM
Project RunwayWith the exception of Santino's homemade soundtrack in Season Two, I always wondered whether or not we were hearing the music the Project Runway designers actually chose for their Fashion Week outings.

I just don't believe that punk rocker Jeff Sebelia or hip-hop head Michael Knight would willingly send their models down the runway to the innocuous, down-tempo soundscape we heard on Bravo.

I figured copyright issues got in the way of us figuring out whether Sebelia would drop a Stooges track on us.

While the new Project Runway CD release may not answer my question, it does solve one mystery. The music on Project Runway is all created by an "audio branding company" called Barefoot Music. Not since the Muzak corporation was formed has a group dedicated themselves so successfully to creating inoffensive, aural wallpaper.

However, unlike Muzak, the Barefoot crew is made up of composers and musicians from different genres creating original tunes for television shows and commercial industries.

Frankly, it's brilliant if a little soulless to be composing music for "clients," but we all have to pay the bills. No one begrudges a composer for making a living composing, or a would-be essayist for making a living blogging. (Ah-hem.)

If, like me, you can't remember a single tune from Project Runway's three seasons other than Santino's "It's Fashion, It's Just Fashion," than you'll be able to reacquaint yourself with Barefoot's work on November 21st. Pre-orders of the Project Runway CD are available via Amazon.

It's been reported that Uli's the only one who actually used Barefoot.

Jeffrey composed his own v.v.un-good music for the show, a song called "Swing." It's availaible on his band's Myspace page:
