The Daily Show: November 2, 2006

Midterm MidtacularAs part of The Daily Show''s good-bye to Ohio State University, a few of the correspondents donned OSU gear and talked about how much fun they had during the past week. However, Rob Riggle put on some Michigan gear and pretty much made the entire crowd want to kill him. What a brave, brave man.

John Hodgman, Daily Show Resident Expert and second busiest man alive (after Flavor Flav, because going through an intense book tour is just slightly less taxing than Flavor of Love), dropped by to talk about the new computerized voting methods. "These new voting machines are SHINY. They go beep and boop." This segment got me thinking... Which would be more awesome? The Diebold Transformer or the Diebold Accuclaw?

"Midterm Spotlight: The House": Nancy Pelosi. Don Sherwood. What else is there to say?

The night's guest was Borat Sagdiyev of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. When I found out that he was going to be on The Daily Show, I was thinking, "Does Borat know that Jon is Jewish?" I liked how they addressed that at the end of the interview. I also found his jab at Madonna, the transvestite, quite amusing because Sacha Baron Cohen (the comedian that plays Borat) appeared in her video for "Music", as his other character, Ali G. By the way, does anyone know if Cohen has done any interviews for this film as himself? I saw him on Late Night with Conan O'Brien a few nights ago and it was Borat again. Being in character all the time must be exhausting.

Before the Moment of Zen, Senior Ohio State Campus Affairs Correspondent Brutus Buckeye (the OSU mascot) made a short cameo. I thought it was a nice thing to include as a final good-bye to OSU. Moment of Zen: The dispersal of the band from the previous night's Moment of Zen. Nifty choice.

"Being in character all the time..." That's funny.. Colbert is almost always in character. In fact, it gets confusing when he's not in character...

I was OK with Baron Cohen doing the interview as Borat. He was on as himself a year or two ago, so this was almost like avoiding repeating himself.

I loved Jon's line about UMich/OSU fans--"you guys are like the Sunni and the Shia!" It's true. My brother went to UMich, and I lived briefly in Columbus back in '87, and I can tell you the hatred runs DEEP.

If I remember the EW cover story on "Borat" correctly, Baron Cohen has not done any interviews out of character - it's either Borat in the guest's chair, or nothing. You have to admire that total dedication to the character.
