Goodbye Happy Hour

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 6th 2006 4:16PM

Happy HourBrett told you the other day that it looked like FOX was pulling the new game show The Rich List after only one episode, and Jonathan told you about The O.C. being moved back to Wednesday nights. But what got kinda lost in the mix of all these FOX schedule moves is that the network has also canceled the freshman comedy Happy Hour. (They've even removed it from the web site drop down menu - that was quick.)

I can't say that this is much of a surprise. I'm actually surprised that it lasted this long on the schedule. I have absolutely no idea if it was a bad show or not, but it got terrible reviews from critics, and many readers here picked it as the first show to be canceled in our contest.

Was the show as bad as everyone says? It seemed to have a funny premise (straight-laced guy influenced by his wacky bachelor best friend who turns his life upside down), but critics hated it, and I don't think the ratings were that great either. Readers, did it deserve a chance, or is it just another one of those terrible short-lived FOX sitcoms to add to the list of terrible short-lived FOX sitcoms?

I also attended a taping of Happy Hour, and found it to be great!! The cast had meshed really well by then, the writing had gotten a lot better, and the episode we saw was hysterically funny (the Halloween one.) I thought the acting was terrific and now that it's cancelled I hope the actors get picked up for other shows soon - will miss Beth & Lex the most!!

Fox never supported or promoted the show (I have had enough of Til Death ads to last me a lifetime!) as they never DO support sitcoms (exception, The Simpsons, which is their bread & butter!). They should have tried the show on another night (like Sunday instead of "War At Home", which is awful!) They also could have marketed it to the "Married With Children" crowd - would have been perfect!

Everyone who is panning this show - this is America - where we let people like DIFFERENT things, so let's open our minds a little and be a bit more positive about actors/writers/directors and their careers - I don't diss on YOU for being a fast food worker because I don't like burgers, now do I? No, I believe in your right to do what you do best!

Oh my god what is wrong with some of you people?? I went to a taping of this idiotic excuse for a sitcom and may I say I have never had to endure a more painful 3 hours in my life. Are we talking about the same show?? The actors (with the exception of Brad Faxon, whom I can only assume needed the money) were so clearly lacking in comedic talent that even calling this show a comedy is a stretch. Then again, they had little to work with, considering the atrocious writing clearly aimed at producing a laugh from the lowest common denominators of society. Even in this pursuit I can't help but feel they missed the mark, the nadir being the following line from Larry: "She's reading a book, probably a feminist". HAHAHA, how hilariously denegrading and sexist.

All in all, a terrible show and I'm glad it will no longer sully television screens with its immature attempts at humour and painfully bad acting.

Good riddance to bad television!!

Happy Hour was a funny, cute sitcom that featured quirky yet interesting characters. Now this was a show very similar to The Loop and Teachers both of which I really liked but were cancelled pretty quickly too. I don't know if the bar is set too high for sitcoms or what but I'm tired of getting cheated out of some cheap yuks by skittish networks. Why don't they just continue them online at the network's website where they can still sell some advertising without the cost of a primetime tv spot ?? Come on Networks - think outside the box !

I thought the show was mediocre...or "good" in FOX parlance. But they are keeping 'Til Death???...not funny, even for someone married twice! And what about The War at Home, Spike Feresten, and I gotta say, Mad TV has gone to hell this year too.

Fox should continue with the elimination of bad shows and cancel The O.C., one of the worst pieces of mindless entertainment.

I thought it was likeable but this type of show does not do well on Fox -- it needed a better lead in and I think Til Death is not that great but that was judging from one episode and I don't really like Brad Garrett.

Hmmm maybe I'm the only one watching it then, because I liked it. I mean it was outstanding, but it had some chuckle moments; much better than Til Death, but I'm only 20 so maybe I don't "get it"

I think the show could have been good. But all the actors were terrible.

Happy Hour was really bad. I watched a couple of episodes, too entranced to turn away. It's like driving past a car wreck that way.

I'm not sure why everyone pans 'Til Death tho. As a married couple of almost 9 years, my wife and I LOVE it!

I reviewed this show, it was bad. But it wasn't as bad as 'Til Death. How is that still on? http://www.whatentertainment.com/view/_Til_Death_and_Happy_Hour
