The Amazing Race: He Can't Swim But He Can Eat Cow Lips

by Deidre Woollard, posted Nov 6th 2006 7:26AM
(S10E09) Here's my conundrum -- I am a woman and therefore really want to see a female team win the Amazing Race, however I find it really hard to root for the Beauty Queens. They are so snide about the "six pack" and they are aggressive and rude. Still, they are chicks and they do kick some serious butt.

The big twist this week is the teaming up of teams. I've been waiting to see this sort of challenge in the race (ideally I'd like to see teams split up and shuffled someday). There is also a fast forward that involves eating cow lips which means that two teams have to complete the task together.

Tyler and James team up with Rob and Kimberley and immediately head off to the fast forward. Dustin and Kandice arrive next and are forced to chill for a while. When David and Mary and Lyn and Karlyn show up, the beauty queens are left partnerless until the hapless Chos show up. Suddenly Dustin and Kandice pounce on the brothers like they are holding tiaras in their hands. When discussing the two challenges (either toting mattresses or papermaking), the Beauty Queens say "you are Asian, we could make paper." The Chos chose to let the comment pass and work well with the blondes. Meanwhile David and Mary and Lyn and Karlyn are teamed in a partnership of likeable last placers.

After the challenge ends it seems that the Chos are a bit more impatient with their six pack alliances. After all, the Beauty Queens are a bit more efficient no matter how aggressive they are. Plus, as the Chos saw first hand, nothing galvanizes the locals like a pair of blondes. The road block involves finding a variety of stamps. A good challenge for the non-athletic to get in a road block but not exactly a fun one for the viewers at home.

Usually fast forward teams finish first but the cow lip eaters are absolutely glacial as they go about their gruesome task. As a young male team, Tyler and James should be doing well in this Race and yet they are whiny and directionally-challenged. Dustin and Kandice roll in as the first team. Tyler and James are the second team, followed by Rob and Kim. The Chos are the fourth team leaving Lyn and Karlyn and David and Mary in the race for last. David and Mary are the fifth team but have to wait for one half hour due to last week's last place finish. Lyn and Karlyn make it before David and Mary's penalty is up and team Kentucky is sent home. It was time but still I'm typing with tears in my eyes watching them head out.

I like the beauty queens. Their Asian comment about the Cho's was no worse than the Cho's comment about using two pretty blondes. I didn't think either comment was made in malice or hate, but you can't condemn one if you aren't gonna condemn the other.

I would have rather seen Alabama go before Kentucky, but all these people who are on this race to make friends will never win this race. There is always some level of "every team for themselves" that is needed, and I think the Beauty Queens have balanced this accordingly.

I love the Beauty Queens as well. Not only are they easy on the eyes, but they are reasonably smart and very competitive. They have run a great race so far, and the snark hasn't gotten too much for me.

As for Kentucky? They deserved to go. I admired their spunk, but the whoel six pack thing was a disaster, while they all waited around for the whichever of them was the slowest team at the time. Also, at the end she complained that she had wanted to win the money for her kids. NO YOU DIDN'T! You actually wanted to make lifelong friends with a couple of women from another state who you will likely never speak with again after the race.

I dig the Barbies! Look, how many a-hole frat boys have won the show? If these gals were dudes with the same behavior, nobody would bat an eyelash -- they would be "driven and competitive". They always keeps their spirits up, they support each other *completely*, and don't break down when frazzled. Have they ever blamed the other when a challenge goes south?

I also like the new "Intersection" -- I'd love to see more teams locked together for more than one challenge. Maybe have to stick together for a whole leg! Or maybe have to switch partners for a challenge?

I have to admit that's last night's show was the first time I got a little misty at Kentucky's last place speech. I hope more "rural" people get out and see the world! I can't imagine what an experience it was for them!

As much as I was proud of Kentucky and Alabama for competing in the race, I'm ready for them both to be gone. It's time for the Cho's to remember they are in a race and they need to step up. I don't have a problem with teams becoming friends but it's silly to say I would rather not win than to lose my friends in this race. It's a RACE! I don't think you have to be cut throat but you do have to look out for yourself more than they have been doing.

Personally I want a female team to win. The beauty queens have toughed it out physically with the other teams and used charm and brains to get through these challenges. Sure they make snide comments, so what, what team doesn't at some point in time. It wouldn't be good television if they didn't have some of that in it and for all we know they egg them on to do it.

Kentucky needed to go, they were a weak team that was helped along. They had no place making it as far as they did.

Maybe they would have finished eating earlier if everyone could stop saying "dude" and "bro" and "babe" for five minutes.

Teams split up and shuffled? Hey, this isn't Survivor - let's try and keep it that way. I like the intersection idea (and I hope this replaces the idiotic yield), as long as it doesn't last more than a challenge or two - I also think it only really makes sense with a challenge that actually requires 4 people (the mattress task was pretty good for that).

I actually really like the blondes - they have been excellent racers for the most part, and seem to be very self-aware, which unfortunately is quite rare on most reality shows. I guess nobody should be surprised that beauty queens are extremely competitive - but I am a little surprised at how competent they are at a wide range of things (OK, maybe not the best drivers).
