Veronica Mars: Hi, Infidelity

by Keith McDuffee, posted Nov 7th 2006 10:45PM

(S03E06) Dean O'Dell backing up Veronica -- who would've thought? Did I miss something or does Veronica still somehow have a job with a different school paper, one that's not the Free Press? Did she somehow get out of working in the library, or is there some other on-campus paper I'm forgetting? Not the Lampoon, is it?

I have to admit that after last week's episode, some commenters had a good theory that Wallace didn't cheat and had instead written something like "so-and-so is selling answers to this test." Alas, that doesn't seem to be the case. Though I was surprised to see some leniency coming his way with the cheating. Isn't that, like, expulsion material? Not to mention he stays on the basketball team?

Finally a mini-mystery worth solving! I can't remember a time when I wanted so desperately for Veronica to solve a "crime." The thing about this season is the mysteries haven't really been deep seated, hugely consequential problems that affect most everyone we know in some way. Not that rapes aren't a big problem, but they aren't affecting Veronica, Wallace, Keith, or Logan very much.

How long before Vinnie Van Lowe comes snooping around to find Keith with Harmony? I actually almost thought the mysterious "Rory" was going to wind up being Vinnie, staying at the Neptune Grand for a case ... checking on who Harmony was cheating with.

Random thought: What was with Logan shaking off a high-five with Parker for like five minutes?

It turns out I was partly right with Prof. Landry's T.A. being shady, but then we see he's actually quite involved with the rape mystery on campus. An interesting fact he brings up is how there were no semen traces at any of the crime scenes. To me this supports the theory that the Hearst rapist is a woman, and I'd guess it's either the (former) editor of the Free Press or one of the feminist students who's out to frame the fraternities.

Keith is certainly setting himself up for a big fall, even if he seems to have taken that accident as a sign that life is too short.

Another big moment in this episode was Logan coming to Veronica about Mercer, explaining that he can't tell Veronica why or where he was with Mercer. There are so many things that could be going on there that it's not even worth guessing. Though hopefully for you LoVe fans, the title of this episode doesn't span into V's world.

Random thoughts: A) Who the heck had keys to Ratner's car and had access to all of that hotel stash to set him up with and B) what made Ratner even try to look for Veronica's paper online in the first place?

Quote of the episode:
Ratner: "You don't notice the little people because you're too busy lounging with Captain Moneybags here."
Logan: "That's Admiral Moneybags."

If you're referring to the first scene, then when the Dean talks about Veronica's 'story', he means the report she made to him about Claire's faked rape. Veronica is still slaving away in the library, as far as can tell.

I concure that there are only two plausible leads to the rapist
- The TA
- The Newspaper Editor
Though, none of the evidence is from that matter to be sure...

4. How did the "horrible scary car crash out of nowhere" become the repeating scene of the year? They've used it on at least three other shows so far this season, not to mention those ridiculous Volkswagen commercials.

They all got it from Pulse?

13. Am I the only one that got a bit bugged when Piz woke up Wallace with the tennis racket and said:
- I could have just left you there and taken your ipod.

Since Wallace clearly don't have one...

He was listening to something in the library scene.

The T.A. obviously has some "hair" issues. He certainly wears a wig, beard looks "painted" on. When Veronica notices his "map" of the rapes, he notes that there has never been any DNA found at the rapes and specifically mentions hair. I think that he probably has some sort of "hairless" condition that makes him feel unpopular with the ladies. He then rapes them and shaves their heads to make them bald like he is.
The goose chase he put Veronica on might have been a test to see how good she actually is and how worried he should be about her.

I'm sure most fans know this, but most of the college stuff is filmed on the SDSU campus in San Diego. Last week, they were filming at UCSD in front of the old gym (I'm a graduate student here). They put up Hearst banners and a Hearst billboard (laden with random fliers). The scene had Veronica sitting in front of the gym, and then popping up to see Piz coming out of the Gym with a bunch of other people and then walking and talking away. Unfortunately I couldn't hear any of the conversation, but it was very cool to see.

Great episode.

I didn't get the stuff in the trunk, but I do now. Hey, right or wrong the guy was a jerk.

Well, the evidence is all out there. Who dunnit?

Mercer - probably not - Logan has his back. Probably something to do with Dick.

Piz - could be a shocker, but a little too "Beaver"

Dick - too stupid to cover his tracks. Also wasn't at Hearst last year when the rapes began. Ditto Piz I guess.

The professor? Nah - he's too busy getting it on with the Dean's wife.

Professor's creepy TA? - not a bad canidate, but I just don't see it. He smells too much like a red herring. And he seems to disapprove of the professor' affairs. He strikes me as prudish? Maybe in love with the prof. himself?

The Dean - No evidence - but he does seem to engage in a lot of extracurricular activities.

Logan, Wallace, Weeval, Lamb, Keith Mars, etc. - yeah right.

I'm going for the paper editor and the creepy escort woman. The victims are either voluntary or involuntary. Think about it - the perfect cover. And the newspaper editor was at the frat party (remember Dicks rat trap hand?). She roofies them and creepy chick drives them home to shave their heads? No DNA evidence makes sense. And who would suspect women in a rape case? Especially woman working as a team? They may be doing it to cover up something else. Or to gain power - this may be why Veronica is targeted next - she got the newspaper woman fired by the dean.

Maybe Lamb's lack of enthusiasm for the case means something. Probably that he suspects a set-up.

...assuming the show lasts for the rest of the season. Ratings have been down big time these last two weeks. As for next week's episode, I agree that someone will probably come along to save her, or it's some sort of a warning against her to stop investigating. I can't imagine the writers letting Veronica get raped again.

I have a bad feeling about one of the major characters in the series...like Keith said..."The thing about this season is the mysteries haven't really been deep seated, hugely consequential problems that affect most everyone we know in some way." This to me speaks as a sign that something very bad is going to happen to someone close to Veronica for one of the later mysteries in the season...
