Why are Battlestar Galactica's ratings down?

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 8th 2006 9:33AM
bsg; battlestar galacticaCritics (like us) love it. Fans can't get enough of it. So, why are Battlestar Galactica's ratings down a shocking 20% this fall? This article in TV Week sheds some light on the issue. It suggests that BSG is getting pummeled by all the other shows that are premiering on network television right now. Not only are people being bombarded by a ton of new stuff, but there are a lot of new, action-drama serials like Jericho and Heroes that also have sci fi themes. And, interestingly, Sci Fi Channel is popular because of BSG and NBC used that popularity to promote Heroes, by airing it on the cable network. The lesson here is that fall television is still the domain of the broadcast networks. It's too bad that most of America doesn't get to experience the truly great television shows-- such as BSG, Rescue Me, and The Closer-- that are happening off of the big four networks.

total frakkin bullshit. Commercial succes hasn't affected anything w/ the quality of this show. I am sorry you are in a TINY SMALL EXTREMELY LITTLE MINORITY w/ your opinion. And your "too many commercial rant"...GIVE ME A BREAK!!

"Oh, another commercial during my favorite show..there goes my attention span...damn you TV!!" That is a lame observation.

Not everyone subscribes to "Short-Attention Span Theatre"!

I love the show but its dragging a bit now. Plus, I can't believe the amount of commericals in the show. They have more commericals than three hours of regular programming. It's downright disruptive now. I can't get into the story because it seems like I get litle snippets surrounding around ten commericials.

It's definitely a TIVO type show. Fastforward all the commericals and you'll realize that there's very little room left for plot lines. Commerical success has sure affected the show. A drop of 20% in viewership isn't suprise.

I'm sorry, but Doctor Who bores the living shit out of me. I doubt SciFi will pick it up for another season on their network. It's just not catching on here in the states.

My opinion, last week's episode (Torn) just bored me to death. I enjoyed the cliffhanger of last season, but when they rejoined the story this season, everything went quick (even though it was three or four episodes storyline). Maybe the show is getting too dark for its own good. I don't know. All I know, I'm getting bored with BSG. I rather watch Doctor Who before it. The Cybermen episodes were really good. It was creepy, but fun to watch at the same time. I don't get that with BSG anymore. I'll still watch BSG, but we will see where it will head next.

I can't understand how anyone could think that the writers cop out by washing away the consequences of actions in the show using the passage of time. I don't think any show on TV deals as convincingly with consequences as BSG does - right down to bruises and tattoos and damage to the sets, and certainly in the development of Characters. Re-watching the series from the miniseries onwards is an eye-opener for how far many of the characters have travelled, Tigh, Starbuck and Sharon in particular. And not just lead characters - take a look at Seelix, the now hardcore vengeful resitance member sitting in The Circle of Judgement and Vengeance and compare her with the scared and uncertain medic tending a dying comrade at the end of Season 1, or Kat, or Anders.
As for cop outs, people must be confusing the show with Lost or Alias because really I again can't see the balls that have simply been dropped.

I have not yet seen "The Wire" so cannot comment on it in relation to BSG, but that Caveat aside I think that if you were to bet on a TV show becoming a significant cultural landmark and lodestone thsi would be the one - even given that the last decade has seen some especially good TV writing BSG is something pretty special, and enormous in it's ambition, it is when you re-watch it that you realise just how good it is.

When do they find all that 500 yr old liquor and its one big galactic kegger with Starbuck becoming the sheriff and some alien pig wanting to do her while a band of rebel children storm the castle singing a song.

Really, since we're off of new capricorn(out of Iraq) the plots should return to more adventuress frolicing.

The show has taken the humans, the "goodguys" of the show and turned them into monsters, ie suicide bombers. The horrible New Caprica occupation in the first 2 or 3 episodes was boring, and not what this show should be about. The show got to preachy. The Cylons too religious.

Also Moore is off preparing the new Caprica spinoff show so this show loses his input. And of course the SCI-FI network is a complete joke now and they have left BSG alone.

As to the reason being the networks, I don't think so.

I have a lot to say so bear with me....and excuse the spelling I'm typing fast...

The ratings drop concerns me but it looks like the SciFi Channel is committed to the new Caprica series, so I have to believe the commitment to BSG is firm (unless of course the ratings really really tank - it is a business after all). Be prepared for more death of secondary or primary characters to reduce costs. I can't believe I said that.

This season has been fantastic thus far.....for us fans. But for new folks, now that we are 3 seasons in, it makes it difficult to join in. Episode one is a perfect example. I watched it with my family, I loved but it was their first time. Kara wiping her mouth with a napkin (sorry out of character and over the top) after stabbing the cylon was not what we normally see. And even though Ron's team thinks this is one of the best episodes, critically, it was not the best episode for new comers.....sorry that's just my take. I'm not complaining or Whining, because I LOVE them all. But just saying it just didn't click for Most new viewers.

I also think one of the things Ron has and the PR machine has been promoting is that this is a human drama, a war story etc.. not so much SciFi. I'm OK with that. But the last two episodes.. clearly.. is now moving more deeply into the SciFi realm with more emphasis on Cylons. It has a very abstract feel, a very SciFi feel, alot of interesting and creative editing. I LIKE it but for new viewers who don't normally view SciFi content....it may be a turn off for them. Again I love it, all of you love it but getting new viewers who don't normally watch SciFi content may shy away.

As for the SciFi Channel's decision to move the series to a regular fall line-up, big mistake. First of all they were not able to take advantage of all of the wonderful buzz generated by last season. SciFi aired reruns in the wee hours of the morning (sorry no one is that desperate to check out a TV show and not everyone is a TIVO fan). The demographic they are shooting for has a short attention span and has better things to do. Had they followed and stayed with the HBO model, providing a limited number of new episodes in July and January (make them want more)...this would have been the best chance to build new viewers....for this type of niche show.

Any way those are my thoughts off the top of head. I love this show and look forward to 2 more seasons. And I do hope they find Earth by the end of this season. I believe (unlike the old series) that Ron's team has the talent to write an effective, engaging, creative, and interesting human drama based on the finding Earth scenario. I think they are up for the challenge and I wouldn't put it past them to pursue it.

I was going to chime in here, but my feelings were covered quite well by Akbar, Tim, and Cress.

I think that that might possibly be the 7th Sign. I'm going to go ice skating in hell now. Good day!

To those that say the show is not "character-driven" enough this season...as another example against this notion...how about the Booomer/Athena storyline? In EXODUS, she is confronted by D'Anna w/ the revelation that her and Helos' child is still alive. She is conflicted by this...what to think..is this real, or a fellow Cylon "playing" her? And her scene w/ Chief later in the ep.(about children)...there was a lot of emotion in that scene from her. This will definitely become a bigger storyline later this season. I love the Boomer/Athena&Helo storyline. Their child that they think is gone..they WILL find out that it was a lie. And how pissed off would you be be? As a parent? As an officer serving your fleet and the last human colony? They lied to you. How would you react? If this doesn't foreshadow an intriguing character-driven plotline, then I don't know anything.

Tim-1: Check my last comments about Athena in the previous ep. post. Wondering what you think...
