Criminal Minds: Empty Planet

Gideon(S02E08) I feel like a traitor for saying this because I really did like her character, but I'm loving the show with Elle no longer around. Am I crazy or is it a lot better? JJ and Garcia are both getting move involved with the cases as a result and the overall tone of the show is lot more upbeat. Even jovial at some points. Despite the grim circumstances of this episode (a serial bomber), there was a lot of joking around. I liked it.

Morgan and Gideon had a laugh at the expense of Reid ("Ever talk to someone who wants to continually show you he's smarter than you?") and there were tons more sexual innuendos between Morgan and Garcia than usual. The phone conversations between those two are always funny, so the more the better. I'm just really digging the direction the show is taking and I hope it keeps up once Paget Brewster joins the cast in next week's episode.

As I said, the episode dealt with a serial bomber who was delusional. He thought robots were going to take over the world and he saw it as his duty to take out people associated with technological advancement. People like college professors who specialized in artificial intelligence for example.

The story got sort of weird for me though. He was basing his whole plan on a fictional book called "Empty Planet." Robots learn to mate with humans in it and all sorts of other crazy techo tomfoolery. It was written by another college professor played by JoBeth Williams. She seems to be on a bit of streak with the guest roles though huh? Last time we saw her, she played Henderson's wife on 24 and she got shot. In this episode of Criminal Minds? She got shot. Random? How did that casting call go?

"I need a relatively good-looking middle-aged woman and we're going to shoot her."

"Call JoBeth Williams. Lots of experience in that department."

One other connection that I wanted to talk about is what happened with Gideon and Morgan. Gideon is not one to give praise and support to his team members. He's usually distant when it comes to that stuff. So it seemed a bit out of character when he referred to Morgan as "someone he respects and admires very much." I wonder if this is related to Elle. Things went downhill pretty fast for Agent Greenaway and I wonder if Gideon's character has become softer as a result, to avoid the pain of having another team member lose their marbles. I don't think Morgan is a candidate for cracking under the pressure, but my point still stands. Gideon seems to be easing up a little. It'll be interesting to see how accepting he is when Emily Prentiss (Brewster) joins the BAU team next week.

Does anybody know why Elle is gone? Some people say she asked to be removed from the cast? I loved her and will miss her and would love to know why she is no longer with the show????????

I agree that this was a great episode but I was puzzled as to why they didn't post a police guard outside JoBeth's door. They knew the killer was going to go after her. But Gideon and company just left her all alone and went back to their office. No guard, nothing. I felt that that was one big flaw in the episode.

I loved this episode, especially the interaction between the characters=) As far as the "ripped from the headlines" thing, most of the cases on the show are based on real ones.

About Reid cheating at cards... I got the impression he wasn't doing it to actually cheat, more to thumb his nose at Hotch and flirt with JJ. He could have done it more subtly but it was more like he was showing off to her. (I wonder if they're still dating. Hotch is the only one who has been allowed a personal life this season.)

I also like the show now that Elle is no longer there.

WORD, Tony B. I totally don't get why actors quit hit shows either, especially considering how difficult it is to get any kind of regular employment in the entertainment industry to begin with.

Although w/regards to Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (~Eko, though he'll always be Adebisi to me)--what, you mean he didn't get busted for drunk driving? I just assumed...

Supposedly Rory Cochrane quit CSI:M because it was hurting his pwecious indie credibility...but indie cred don't pay the rent, son! (As perhaps he now knows--or Jonathan Togo calls weekly to remind him.)

But hey, though, that's why actors are actors (i.e. ShowBiz), not Nobel laureates or rocket scientists (a.k.a. RealBiz); intelligence--like the kind needed for smart career decisions--isn't necessarily part of the program.

(Or as I told a friend earlier this week upon seeing Brad Pitt stumping for Prop. 87 here in Cali: "Taking election advice from Brad Pitt is like getting trig lessons from Jessica Simpson." :)

I really hate when TV Shows do such a piss-poor job at depicting a city (such as Seattle) ... especially so when you live there

While I thought Garcia's and Morgan's telephone sex was a little over the top I did like her expression when she was looking around at all of the computers surrounding her.

Reid cheats at cards - who would have guessed?

What I don't get is when actors/actresses have really great roles on TV shows providing them job security and good pay and they ask to be written out of the show? Lately its been Eko from Lost, Elle from Criminal Minds, Kate from NCIS and a couple of seasons ago it was Tim Speedle from CSI:Miami. These folks make more in one episode than I do in 3 years work. If you have nothing else big brewing doesn't it make sense to stay with what you have. Maybe there is a great differences between ShowBiz and RealBiz?
