Criminal Minds: Empty Planet
(S02E08) I feel like a traitor for saying this because I really did like her character, but I'm loving the show with Elle no longer around. Am I crazy or is it a lot better? JJ and Garcia are both getting move involved with the cases as a result and the overall tone of the show is lot more upbeat. Even jovial at some points. Despite the grim circumstances of this episode (a serial bomber), there was a lot of joking around. I liked it.
Morgan and Gideon had a laugh at the expense of Reid ("Ever talk to someone who wants to continually show you he's smarter than you?") and there were tons more sexual innuendos between Morgan and Garcia than usual. The phone conversations between those two are always funny, so the more the better. I'm just really digging the direction the show is taking and I hope it keeps up once Paget Brewster joins the cast in next week's episode.
As I said, the episode dealt with a serial bomber who was delusional. He thought robots were going to take over the world and he saw it as his duty to take out people associated with technological advancement. People like college professors who specialized in artificial intelligence for example.
The story got sort of weird for me though. He was basing his whole plan on a fictional book called "Empty Planet." Robots learn to mate with humans in it and all sorts of other crazy techo tomfoolery. It was written by another college professor played by JoBeth Williams. She seems to be on a bit of streak with the guest roles though huh? Last time we saw her, she played Henderson's wife on 24 and she got shot. In this episode of Criminal Minds? She got shot. Random? How did that casting call go?
"I need a relatively good-looking middle-aged woman and we're going to shoot her."
"Call JoBeth Williams. Lots of experience in that department."
One other connection that I wanted to talk about is what happened with Gideon and Morgan. Gideon is not one to give praise and support to his team members. He's usually distant when it comes to that stuff. So it seemed a bit out of character when he referred to Morgan as "someone he respects and admires very much." I wonder if this is related to Elle. Things went downhill pretty fast for Agent Greenaway and I wonder if Gideon's character has become softer as a result, to avoid the pain of having another team member lose their marbles. I don't think Morgan is a candidate for cracking under the pressure, but my point still stands. Gideon seems to be easing up a little. It'll be interesting to see how accepting he is when Emily Prentiss (Brewster) joins the BAU team next week.
