Lots of people watch The Office -- DUH!

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 10th 2006 9:31AM
the officeA new report from Nielsen Media Research shows The Office is very popular among people who own DVRs. While the show only gets a national average rating of 3.7, it gets 8.7 with DVR owners. We already know that it's hugely popular on iTunes and now is NBC getting an idea of how we watch television: when we want and where we want. It should be interesting to see whether this Nielsen data about DVR owners changes the way networks choose their programming -- or at least maybe it'll change the way networks decide to cancel programs. After all, The Office would've been dead if it weren't for iTunes. What shows will DVRs save from termination?

Yeah but those people probably skip the ads right?

Precisely. Are the networks there to entertain, or there to make money? I'd say one of the primary reasons to have a DVR is to skip the ads (the other of course being easy recording to watch whenever). DVR use might indicate a slight bump in advertiser $$'s but I can't imagine it would bump as much as real eyeballs that can't FF through ads.

SJ,

Noone that watches BSG actually goes out of Friday LOL.

Seriously, most people I know record all their stuff and then watch it in "series."

Like I've got three episodes of Lost, Prison Break, and Jericho (not to mention all of Weeds S2 and 3 Dexters) on my PVR to watch. I normally will sit down and watch 2-3-4 of them in a row on a weekend (or a slow weeknight) as I hate the whole cliffhanger BS that most shows do.

Yeah but those people probably skip the ads right? I'm guessing it doesn't have a large effect on advertisers.

And agree with Sherm on BSG. It's on Friday and a lot of people probably record it and watch it later on.

Battlestar Galactica maybe? I think more watch it than the "ratings" would indicate...
