Survivor: Cook Islands: Mutiny

by Deidre Woollard, posted Nov 10th 2006 8:54AM
survivor nate(S13E08) After a few weeks when the whole tribes-divided-by-race thing seemed like a non-story, the racial divisions of the first tribes reared their ugly heads as Jonathan began dreaming of an all-white world. At the start of the episode, Jonathan campaigns against Ozzy and then at first opportunity with Candice starts spinning a plan for a whites-only final four with Adam and Parvati over at Raro. Mutiny is the order of the day and squinty little Candice lets her lust for Adam, the all-American doofus, help her shake up the game.

As the previews hinted the tribes are given an opportunity to switch to a different tribe. Adam and Candice shoot each other longing glances and finally Candice steps up and Jonathan follows her. Off they got to Raro. Poor Adam, he wanted Candice but didn't know she'd also have a tag-along. Yul is surprised by the move as he is by most acts of perfidy. Ozzy is not surprised, hell, he'd probably have done it a few episodes ago if it would have benefitted him. Now however, he is adorably outraged.

The reward involves coffee, muffins and letter from home and the teams compete by having two men roll barrels with the two women in them. It's Yul and Ozzy versus Nate and Adam. Ozzy is basically half fish and Yul provides the muscle whereas Adam and Nate are essentially brainless brawn.

Aitu sends Candice to Exile Island and then goes off to enjoy their teary victory as they bond over notes from home. On Exile Island, Candice makes it clear that she jumped to be with Adam and Parvati (really just Adam) and she was surprised that Jonathan went with her and she doesn't trust him. Nate immediately targets Jonathan as his new object of hatred (suddenly his picking on Brad is a distant memory--apparently white turncoats rank higher than Asian "nancy boys" on Nate's haterade rankings). Adam can't figure out how he got his girl back but still hasn't been able to indulge in any victory snuggling and he's got this new shifty dude joining him at camp.

The immunity challenge is one of accuracy and intelligence and teamwork not brute strength. Raro has to have Jonathan, Brad and the other also-rans compete since they have four extra members. Raro gets an early lead but Aitu catches up. Jonathan gets frustrated with Jeff and actually talks back during Jeff's ceaseless commentary. Meanwhile Aitu gets their third target and heads for home, solves the puzzle quickly and wins.

At Raro, Candice does her best to throw Jonathan on the bonfire. Meanwhile Jonathan is a one-man work crew trying to keep his head down. Adam and Nate discuss who to eliminate and Brad becomes the designated target yet again. Nate does his best "Denzel" to try and convince Brad that he isn't going to vote him out (oh Nate, you are no Denzel). But when Candice tattles on Jonathan, Adam goes into defense mode. No one ever trusts Jonathan but no one ever seems to move against him too much either. Is he the Dr. Will of this Survivor season, the danger in the game that everyone discusses but doesn't take action against?

At tribal, Nate admits he is suspicious of the newcomers. Sometimes, and by sometimes I mean all the time, Nate talks too much. He tells Jeff that Jonathan shouldn't try to be the leader because this tribe doesn't like leaders. Brad also admits he doesn't trust his tribe. Yeah, he's right about that one, they unanimously send him packing but he does get the honor of being the first on the jury. Yup, jury picking starts a little early this season. Brad's going to have a nice long chill-out period to plot revenge against his Raro members. If they don't get it together he's going to be seeing a lot of them soon despite the fact that they've got the numbers.

Hello. My name is Priti Singh and I'm a Research Scholar and Writer from New Delhi. I write to you as the author of the coffee table book "The Islands and Tribes of Andaman and Nicobar." I happened to come across your site and wanted to bring to your notice the publication of such an exquisite, informative and engaging book. The book of course is sui generis in the sense that it is the first of its kind on the place and unlike a regular glossy. It is extremely exhaustive - detailing every aspect of this very unique archipelago which in all probability is the last bastion of primeval mankind and one of the few places left on earth that remain un-spoilt by man's rapacity.

The islands were devastated by the Dec. 2004 tsunami that ravaged large parts of Southeast Asia. The book serves to spread a good word about the place and its people and goes a step further in trying to do its bit to help revive tourism there (as 60% of the island's population is directly/indirectly dependent on the industry) that was badly hit by the catastrophe.

"The Islands and Tribes of Andaman and Nicobar" illustrates and showcases all the wondrous facets of the archipelago and contains some very rare archival images and documents that give it an engaging edge. The book has been well received and features in the Nov.2006 issue of the Incredible India magazine. The foreword of the book has been written by the world renowned wildlife photographer Mr. Rajesh Bedi (whose brilliant images of the place and its aboriginal tribes form an important part of the book).
If interested, you could go to www.prakashbooks.com or alternatively contact me or Mr. Gaurav Sabharwal, Director, Sales and Marketing - Prakash Books for further details. Ph. 91-11-23247062-65 Fax. 91-11-23246975
Looking forward to a favourable response.
Thank you and Regards,
Priti Singh

First time posting at TVSquad - got hooked after Wil Wheaton started writing his entertaining recaps of old STTNG eps...This season is rather boring - I do like the more complex challenges - better than watching them bake, nearly drown, or freeze for ten hours. I like the brain and brawn challenges. Contestants are basically boring this season except for Cawboi - he was intersting, ei pretty weird. I don't even know half of the people's names. I hope Aitu members all stick around - I hope what Ozzy said rings true - mutiny people will go first - I seriously hope this happens.
This show has slowly become more and more predictable. They pick the same personality types almost every year - though they didn't have any openly gay guys or girls - but, I think Brad is gay. Because the personalties are the same year after year, you can name all the tribe members by their personalty attribute, then go on to predict their behavior. BORING!
I want a Survivor season of all Introverts - they reveal very little - being back some interest in the game. Or maybe a season of professional strategist for varying niches in business - that would be fun.

Are we sure they're eating so well? Jonathan, in particular, has lost a ton of weight and flab from being on the island.

I'm not entirely sure Jonathan's defection wasn't all that dumb. For weeks his own "alliance" has been tossing his name into the eviction hat. He had to have gotten a vibe from this. Had he stayed and they lost, they probably would have booted Ozzy, but they most definitely would have gotten him out next time.

Where he is completely fooled is thinking that Candice is allied with him. He is hoping the original allegiance with he Candice, Pavarti and Adam.

Maybe I missed it, but was what Candice said to Adam true? Was Jonathan trying to get him first, or was she playing him to get rid of Jon? I'm guessing she is lying because Jon seems to want to keep his week one tribe together.

They can't have a merge too soon with the teams 7 and 4. Aitu will be picked off one by one that way. I would think they have to wait at least one or two more rounds unless Aitu loses a tribe member. They let Stephanie spend a night alone, they might just let this go a bit further.

This is a rather half - ass, boring season. Yul should win this if they don't stack the cards on him and merge too quickly.

I have been assuming that they "there's [n]ever been such a well-fed Survivor bunch" concept is a direct result of last season's starvation. Especially towards the end, Aras and Danielle and the rest of the Survivor 13 gang were probably getting only a few hundred calories per day.

Adam appears to be one of those "surfer boy clubber dudes" who's got some pipes, but doesn't know how to use them. He's an absolutely terrible swimmer, lazy (as portrayed by the creative editing by the Survivor producers), and not the brightest bulb in the costco megapack.

That said, several things about this year's Survivor really, really bug me.

- the show's editors seem to be really getting creative with their editing - more and more this season, they seem to be cutting in "reactions" by tribe members to something one person says - but it's quite obvious (esp. in tribal council) that they are NOT showing real time reactions to what is being said - they're just creatively cutting in goofy face reactions that person b is not actually doing when person a is talking.

- the freaking challenges are lame ass and way too complex this year. Too many fifteen level puzzles that probably require a ton of off-camera instruction to the survivors

- food acquisition is WAY TOO EASY this year. I don't think there's ever been such a well-fed Survivor bunch.

And more, but I gotta get to work.

I just wanted to say this was an excellent recap, and I think you have the personalities and motivations well sussed out.

In reaction to "So far, Survivor: Cook Islands is shaping up as one of the weaker efforts personality wise.", I think this falls squarely on the shoulders of the episode editor(s) and producers. They're doing a remarkably bad job "telling stories", a skill they've excelled at in the past. They have ignored Sundra and Jenny and Becky almost the entire season. Brad and Parvati and Ozzy are almost after-thoughts. It's been 8 episodes and I still have no idea who anyone is other than Yul, Jonathan, Nate, Adam, and now Candice.

That said, we all know this is Yul's game to win, just like last season was Terry's to win.
