We're looking for a new blogger!

by Keith McDuffee, posted Nov 10th 2006 11:33AM
tv squad angry tv logoAs some of you may have noticed, we've slowly (and somewhat silently) been bringing on new writers for TV Squad. Some of these people applied the old fashioned way, others were referred or carried over from other Weblogs, Inc. blogs. But it's been quite some time since we've actually put a call out for new talent -- until now.

In this case we've got some specifics you need to fulfill before we consider you. Read on below for details.

[UPDATE: The search is over! Please welcome new blogger Jay Black to the squad!]

In order to help us in the way we need at the moment, please don't apply with us unless you fulfill the following:

  • Live in or very near NYC and be able to travel in and around the city easily.
  • Willing and able to do interviews of TV celebs/staff both on the phone and in person. Experience here a big plus. And if you are a celeb, well heck that'd be a plus, too.
  • Willing and able to go to events in the city and help cover them, like the New York TV Festival, for example.
  • Here's the big one: Watches American Idol and wants to do our weekly coverage for it starting in January.
Does this sound like you? If so, email three original writing samples (Update: these must be applicable samples, as in those you'd see on TV Squad) along with a bit about yourself and why you think you're a good match to appsATtvsquadDOTcom. Please don't simply direct us to your blog or former pieces of work, and DO NOT send attachments of any kind. We'll update this post when we've found who we need. Please do not apply in the comments below -- only emails to the address mentioned.

Oh, and before you ask, yes this is a paying gig and we will discuss what that pay is with qualified applicants.

First of all, I feel the need to go out of my way to say that I LIKE Bob's reviews (of the shows i watch, lol, I don't usually read the ones I don't watch, so I can't say anything about his Jerico reviews).

Which leads me to how much I would love to do this. I'm currently in the process of relocating to NYC (most likely the brooklyn area) and should more than likely be settled in there before the new year.

I like AI, it's not one of my favorites, but I've watched it before and would be more than willing to review it.

I have my reservations about the commenters here though. lol, i don't know if I'm thick skinned enough to handle the constant rudeness of some of these people.

But, then again, maybe I am.

I've started to put a couple things together, I've been really busy with getting ready to move, so I haven't had too much time to write.
Hopefully i can get this done before you find someone.

Like others, I could blog AI for you without a problem but location, location, location. :( I use to live in NJ before the husband got relocated so this is a good year too late. Plus I would have to have a fantastic spell check program!

Is Weblogs interesting in starting a sports blog of some kind? Just curious because my husband would be a natural. He already writes some for a team fan site but I think he would be good in a format similar to this. Just curious, I guess ESPN and SI have that all covered.

Argh, except for the celebrity-mingling aspect, this sounds like a natural for me. I have covered American Idol at times before in my blog and plan to blog it this season. But, I can see me tripping over my own feet at a huge social event or getting tongue-tied actually interviewing someone. Sigh, I am in the area... but I'm SO much better just on the computer.

I hope you get a great new talent aboard (and it would be nice if AI got one, too).

Justin -- It's usually the manner in which we are criticized where we be come "defensive". It's not a matter of ego-stroking. When people lash out over a typo in the comments, we have to ask ourselves what they're trying to accomplish. Why get hostile over a typo? Why are they commenting on the post for that mistake, *and* going through the motions of approving that comment, when they could have just used the corrections form to do so in a civil manner? For the most part it's just to get attention, and this isn't the way to do it.

Also, what the hell are you talking about regarding the requirements not meaning we're looking for professionalism? Because they're limiting? If anything else, it's to look for *more* professionalism and not just a do-everything person.

If you want yourself to be heard by us regarding errors, typos and that sort of thing, seriously, use the corrections form on the right. We editors can't see *every* comment -- there are hundreds of them a day! If you want to be noticed for helping us out and pointing out the errors, use the right tool and submit it via the correction form. Otherwise, yes, you're left to the mercy of the person who wrote the post.

Let me also add, Justin, that in looking back through your past comments (yes, we can all easily go back through and find out who posted comments, where, where from, etc.) all you've done is post hostile and insulting comments toward the writers here. I almost wonder myself now why I'm even wasting my time replying to you here when you're obviously looking to get attention through negative remarks.

Hey Keith, I agree with the guys on Bob's reviews on a couple of those shows as well as other bloggers on here.

I don't see them as insults, but criticisms and although I see why you should be protective of your writers, you need to discern the difference when there's a growing amount of people who's taken umbrage with the quality of writing on this site.

I have a good understanding of Weblogs Inc. as well as respect, Kim Voynar from Cinematical takes criticism from readers who respond to these posts and thanks them. Now that's an example that needs to be shown here, instead when writers here get called out on the simple errors they either choose to ignore it or be overly sensitive.

After all, reading those requirements of yours, it's plain to see you're not seeking much professionalism or experience from these guys and whatever goodwill they have is more inherently sought from the site itself. I just hope you start to craft this site more professionally and stop falling into the stereotype of blogs being nothing but personal ego-stroking.

Tony, if you're serious about wanting to join us, then why not apply at the address Keith provided? I haven't seen anything come in from you yet, at least not that I can recall.

I was aiming for humor. I realize you're probably not going to receive many celebrity contributors. And by socialite, I was just stretching the part about going to a lot of parties. Figured they'd have to be a socialite.

I suspect it wouldn't be that hard to find someone in New York who enjoys American Idol.

Well...next time you need a 20-something who lives in NC to cover SNL and even the CSIs, gimme a holler.

Love the site!
