Why I'm cutting The Class
Because it stinks. That's what I'd like to say in my post about why I'm not reviewing The Class anymore, but since I get paid to actually render more thoughtful (and longer) opinions than that, I'll give you folks a little more insight.
I had faith in this show when it first started; after all, the comedic pedigree behind it -- James Burrows, David Crane, Jeffrey Klarik -- was stellar. And, while the pilot was a bit of a jumbled mess, the next two episodes had some laugh-out-loud moments. But after that, it crashed and burned, and really hasn't made me laugh since.
The reasons for this are numerous, and I've gone over them ad nauseum in my reviews of the show: too many characters, not enough characters I care about, the whole irritating Holly/Kyle/Holly's Really Gay Husband storyline, etc. The only characters that have funny things to say, Kat and Ethan, aren't doing enough to keep me watching from week to week.
If they somehow get the show down to Kat, Ethan, Lina, and Richie, it might improve, though the Richie/Lina "triangle" storyline is going to get old in a hurry if they don't resolve it soon (and what show gives a main character two broken ankles and straps her to a wheelchair right off the bat?).
They can also keep Duncan and Nicole, but just get them together and dump the whole "forbidden love" schtick; it's been done on a million sitcoms, most of them executed better than it is here (for instance, you're supposed to hate the guy getting in love's way. Yonk's an idiot, but David Keith is making him likable to the point where you feel bad that Nicole's cheating on him).
But I don't see the show improving right now the way it is; I don't even see tiny signs of hope, just more of the same mediocrity. And just like with SNL, reviews that say "well, this week sucked," aren't fun for me to write and aren't fun for you to read.
I know the show has fans out there, but I don't know how many are left. Let me know in the comments if you think I'm either on target or way off base.
