Smallville: Static

Clark Kent and the Cookie of Destiny
(S06E08)
Lex is phase-shifted or something into another dimension, where he can look and listen, but not touch. You'd think that Lex would like this situation, at least temporarily, as gathering secret intelligence on loved ones is one of favorite pastimes. Chloe tells Lana that seeing Lex turn into static is no stranger than a lot of things that have happened in Smallville. Not to mention on multiple episodes of various Star Trek series. Because of this dilemma, the episode is packed to the gills with Lex/Lana longing for each other across a void.

Hey, from a distance, the evil nerd who imprisons Lex looks a bit like a young version of Heroes' Horn-Rim Glasses Guy. In the end, Black-Rimmed Glasses Kid will prove to be no match for Jimmy Olsen's ham radio skills.

Even Kal-El can't be in two places at once, but I'm surprised that Chloe was so taken aback by Clark's decision to run down a Zoner in Seattle rather than help solve Lex's disappearance. But that's not as silly as Clark wandering into a hazard area to be greeted with "you must be that first-year medical student I've been waiting for." Please.

In Seattle, Clark stalks the new Zoner's trail of mayhem, which probably would have gone quicker if he could fly. If Black-Rim Glasses Kid can figure out he can shift "frequencies" since the most recent meteor shower, then Clark ought to have sussed out this flying business by now. The Zoner's just lunkhead throwaway baddie with an extremely high metabolism. But he actually gives Clark a superhero name: Krypton Man. I don't think it'll stick.

Leaving Clark on his own, without Chloe, or another series regular, is not a great strategy. Tom Welling is left to tramp earnestly from location to location, interviewing Seattle medical and law enforcement professionals, until he's rescued by a mysterious shadowy guy with glowing eyes. This guy can fly (hint, hint Clark) but doesn't stay to chat with Clark. Also, he likes Oreos -- sort of. At least he likes to nibble around the edges before dropping them for Clark to find. Chloe (Allison Mack)

Lana has a scene with Chloe where she discounts any possibility that Lex might have been up to something dirty with 331. But later she lets Lex know she's totally on board with any hypothetical secret programs to study and possibly dissect meteor freaks. The final moment of the episode is supposed to be some big surprise for the audience, but given that it's already been revealed Lana is carrying little Larry or Lucinda Luthor, it just struck me as not that big a deal.

Not nearly enough Chloe for me this week, but I guess the thinking here was to give Jimmy a chance to shine. In the last couple scenes Chloe did have, she was tricked out with these distracting ginourmous earrings that threatened to smack her in the lip if she had happened to whip her head around too fast.

i beg to disagree on the everybody's notion of the mysterious guy is "the martian manhunter"... the clue are cookies, the guy did change to something else, the guy doesn't have to investigate clark at his house, if he is has power to read minds. literally, it doesn't mean the alien martian has a glowing eyes "its a myth".

to me, it is Captain Marvel!!! he is Billy Batson's alter ego that turns him to a super hero whenever he says "god damns!!!"... what i meant " Shazams!!!" i guess that is logically for a character that shys away or flew away without introducing himself to the another hero -clark kent-. Coz it is not ethical for a hero to rescue a another hero without introducing and giving an impression if he was helping as friend or an enemy, knowing that clark has the ability also that might match with his power.

he has the power to read mind and read clark's head "about lex, lana, chloe ..." and he has good intention. why did he flew away? as if he is like a boy who is overwhelm but shy about helping a another hero...exciting!!!

he did not transform or morph to a thing... just to rescue clark and expose his power. as you've noticed, he just touched the guy and left mark of his hand "which not three finger hand" as if he was trying to "almost" burn the guy.

lastly, cookies. i guess, only a kid enjoys eating oreo cookies.

I hope i'm right coz this wiil be awfully exciting seeing them together inspriging each other to be heroes where ironically both still kids.

KILL LANA OFF! KILL LANA OFF!!! Most unlikable character ever. Can there be anyone more needy and emotionally dependent? I know Kristin Kreuk has a pretty face but her character is ridiculous!

Lana literally makes me sick to my stomach. I wish they would just killer off already. As for them making a big deal out of Lex proposing to her, it will surely frustrate fans. I believe most of their viewer are men, and no man I now wants to see that gay crap. Not that there is something wrong with being gay. I'm just saying that was gay. That's all.

Let me also start by saying I've been a huge Smallville fan from the beginning. That being said, what the hell happened? Lana's character is no longer the same person. In other words, Lana really no longer exists...I don't know what evil person they created, but "Lana" has been written off. Lana would NEVER date Lex...it's not who she is. Also, Martha would never see Lionel because Jonathan would be turning in his grave! F'in Rediculous!! On the same note, I didn't think it was possible for Clark to become even more of a wuss than he used to be. Growing up, it made sense...and I was eager to see him break into manhood. Unfortunately, he is the biggest wimp on the show (compared to all other characters). It is really sad to see how the show has developed. I too think the writers changed or something else must have happened at the fundamental level. A baby? Ok, time to call it quits. I just wish Smallville ended after the 3rd or 4th season. Like many of you, I will watch it til the end because we put so much time into it already. Sorry for venting, I just had to get it out.

I hate where Smallville has gone, it kills me to watch it, and yet I continue. Why? I'm an optimist, I guess. For example, I painfully watched 7 seasons of Voyager. Lana is the worst character in tv history; she has no moral foundation, and yet her story is the most prominent. Cookie monster conveniently leaves oreos around; sure, he like oreos, but does he have to let them slip from his pockets?
Terrible plot devices, and as usual, painful soap opera writing. Is this a challenge to Voyager?

I'll start off by saying that I'm a very big Smallville/Superman fan. However, I'd have to agree with most, if not all of the comments made in this thread. In all honesty, I pity the writers. I feel as though they're taking a beating for the Execs that are stretching out a storyline that has an end most viewers already know, solely to make more money. Doing so has caused them to faintly disgrace an otherwise formidable story.

In an interview a while back, Sam Jones III (Pete) said this: "Smallville's motto is NO tights, NO flight."

And for Smallville fans, that isn't a very good sign. Ironically, we're not very pleased with Smallville a story about Clark Kent as a teenager before becoming Superman transforming to "The Diaries of Lana & Lex, featuring some kid named Kal-El." The slight deviations throughout the many publications of Superman stories have brought us to this point, and has granted what seems to be an "opening" for those in power over this show to make it dwindle down to a near unbearable level, only to make an attempt to shoot it back into the air and dazzle viewers.

I believe that all we can do as Smallville fans, is come together every week, post and pray that they unload every possible comic hero out there, until they decide to make him fly.

Lastly, concerning the "flying" issue; the teaser they gave us back in the second season I believe, when Clark went after Lana in the tornado, and told his father (Johnahtan Kent) that he felt as though he was willing himself to move in the air... a horrible thing to do. Then when he was under Jor-El's influence and he flew after the crystal taking it away from Lex while he was on a plane, also horrible, especially seeing as it was an actual confirmation that he's aware that it's a possibility for him. But yet they toy with us, and leave us with Clark saying that the Martian Manhunter did things he could only dream of (flying)!

The only thing stopping Clark Kent from flying is the kryptonite script Tom Welling has to abide by.

Are you serious about Lana's Baby?? Cause that would make the show a bit more interesting again, and would maybe force them all outta the whole childish feud they have - which btw i cnt even remember why Clark and Lex stopped tlking - and maybe get it back to more a smallville theme insted of One tree hill. Either that or itll turn into a who done it pregnancy - which if it does the'd b may as well cancelling the show and renewing better ones lyk V. Mars!

Yes, The mystery helper was Martian Manhunter. Hello? Their setting up for the Justice League of America (Among MANY other things!) Can any one say The Flash, Aquaman or most notably The Green Arrow (Who founded it!) In the words of "Chloie" last week "Even heroes neeed rescuing" The baby Lana is carring is Clark's! (Supersperm! Sorry, had to throw that in!) Anyone remember a little movie called "Superman III" in which Annette O'Toole(Whoah! Serious Edipus Complex!") all but tells Clark that little Ricky is his?! AH AH AH!) As far as I'm concerned the writers of Smallville are dead on,very smart and creative! The acting is superb, the special efects are flat out some of the best on TV(rival with ALOT of movie FX!) and it sure as hell doesn'nt hurt they have 3 of the hottest women on the face of the planet on this show! With Lana, Chloie, and Lois who the hell wouldn't want to fight for this planet? I'd kick some seroius ass for them and I don't have any superhero abilities(although I have beeen known to turn into the Incredible Hulk and The Punisher on occasion) All in all this show has kicked ass in the past, kicks ass now and in most likelihood will continue to kick ass in the future. That's the bottomline! And I'm a a bottomline type of guy... Just assk Lanna!

As an out-of-country viewer, I often come here for show reviews, or for feedback from other fans. This review, and this week's Heroes review were so poor that feel I have to echo what has been said previously:

Give the shows to TV Squad bloggers who have enough passion to get into enough detail for the fans.

I didn't know who the Martian Manhunter was, but I knew that if I came here after watching the episode, I'd find out. I just expected to find out from the blogger, not the commentors.

Whilst I bear no ill feelings towards Mr Canfield, perhaps he could swap with another TV Squad blogger for a while? His reviews seem casual and dis-interested.
