Battlestar Galactica: Hero

by Keith McDuffee, posted Nov 18th 2006 12:06AM
carl lumbly battlestar galactica
(S03E08) I remember back when I interviewed Carl Lumbly that he'd mentioned something quickly in passing about making an appearance on Battlestar Galactica, or maybe it was just something I read somewhere later. He'd actually also said that he wanted to take a rest for a while, once Alias was through, though I'd hardly call his appearance on Battlestar taking a rest.

This episode was ... strange. There are definitely some interesting things we come to learn about Adama's command before the Cylons wiped out Caprica, though I feel like much of what was told could have (or should have) been told over several episodes. It's still possible they're going to do this, though.

The notion that Adama may thing (or did think) that he possibly caused the Cylons to go on the offensive seemed rather sudden. It's one of those important factors of his character that I'd have thought we'd see more glimpses of in the past, as though there were this "something" haunting him, making him always question his next move when it came to the Cylons. We did get a moment of that last week, when he passed the buck to the President for signing off on the infect-the-Cylon-resurrection-ship plan, though to me it wasn't enough.

I guess you could say Adama just put professionalism and duty before his emotions all this time, and it took the appearance of Bulldog to make him come to grips with what happened that day Bulldog was captured.

About Bulldog's release and the Cylon's "plan" for him. Did anyone else not think that seemed a weak plan? Three years on a Base Star and that's all they came up with? No mental breakdown to create a spy for their own? Why is it that the Cylons are so hellbent to kill Adama anyway? Would his death really drop morale so much that the humans would simply falter and fade away? I'd actually think that, had a Cylon killed Adama, it would only fuel the rage humans already have for Cylons, and the next time they happened upon some of that virus that makes the Cylons sick, they wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Random observation: Amazing shots of BSG still battered to hell. A commenter mentioned this as well several weeks ago, and it's still nice to see this bit of detail still being used. I know, it's a small thing, but I appreciate it.

Getting back to Adama and him feeling at fault for the Cylon aggression. This episode does seem to tie in well with last week, with the question of what makes us human and what rights we have to destroy a sentient race. It seems the patter of the show continues to slowly lean toward the humans and Cylons possibly understanding one another more, and these past two episodes sort of gave that theme a little jolt.

Random observation #2: Love Tigh's eye patch. I've always thought of Tigh as an old salt sea captain, and all that's missing now is a missing limb.

Speaking of Saul, it seems he's back to being close with the Admiral, which is a good thing, as I'd like to see more of his presence on the show.

And what do you make of the Cylon killing herself and going on about what's "beyond" when she dies?

Not a great action-packed episode, though I think I've pointed out that it seems to be purposeful in showing how that line between the humans and Cylons may be starting to blur more.

Oh, and two weeks until the next episode. Boo!

The more I think about it, the less it makes sense. If the cylons plan, weak or not, was to use Bulldog as a vehicle to attack Adama (which in itself is a whisle in the dark), how were they to know who personally ordered Bulldog shot down? If the colonial mission was top secret, the cylons would have no idea in the first place. Of course they knew the colonials did it but by whom? Even if they did know they obviously didn't tell Bulldog since they counted on Bulldog to find out himself. And in real life that again is a major dice roll, classified data and all. Maybe Akbar is right (#2 post) in that it was a prelude to something more sinister.

Oh well...a week and a day until Sharon and/or Boomer.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE!

Well Gene, seeing has Caprica has not gotten past initial scripting I am not sure Hero could be considered laying the ground work for it.

Plus, from what we have been told we wont be seeing the Cylon war at all in Caprica. It is going to be the story leading up to the war (in so much I would guess if it does get made the final moment of the final episode I would imagine we see the Cylons take arms and then credits)

I think that the title "Hero" was meant to mislead us -- we thought it was about the long lost hero returning to the Galactica, but in fact it was a reference to Adama and his acceptance of the "hero" moniker as his penance.

I think that the reason this episode was "different" from others was that it was clearly designed to generate backstory and set up the framework of the proposed spinoff series "Caprica." I think we'll hear more and more about the colonies before the Cylon attack in future episodes until they launch the spinoff.

I wasn't going to comment on this ep. For one, the woman of my dreams was conspicuously absent. Only a brief glimpse or two of the slice of heaven that is Sharon (or Boomer). Beauty incarnate. Stellar acting.

But I must say I will give Dave (post 20) a nod on his point of view. I mean, we can put up with a b or even a c episode now and then when we have the best show in town ..right?

Michael Moncur: I think the reason the cylons didn't put a bomb in the raider is because they knew it would be the first thing the humans checked. This in turn, would have given away the intended deception that they let Bulldog escape. Although they didn't depict it, I think the writers give us leeway for assuming the humans would check things like that. After all, once you minus the commercials, every minute is precious for these complicated plots. So....we the faithful can just fill in the gaps sometimes.

Maybe the cylons let Bulldog go because they couldn't afford to feed him. Did you notice how he dispatched his meal!

HybridAndy,

Do yourself a favor and watch Season 1 (and the mini series that started it all)

Your questions will be answered there plus you will have MAJOR PARTS OF THE PLOT revealed to you.

Easy answer. They dont really have a hatch that a human can get into. They do have their own FTL drives.

A couple of questions I had.

It's my understanding that the Cylon Raiders are self contained, sentient beings. Why do they contain a hatch that can be entered by a human and controls that would allow a human to fly it? Was this explained in a eariler episode (I didn't really get into this show under season 2).

Also, I'm assuming the small Cylon fighters don't have FTL drives. Where did Bulldog and the two other ships come from? How did they know where Galactica and the fleet would be?

Oh and look. Add all three sets at amazon.com and you get a total of 111.99. With free shipping its probably about the same as you paid.

Nice try pimping that site.

Vico.... if you paid full season price for the two half seasons you are a fool.
Buying both sets through amazon I got both for 42.99

You paid 99? good to see you got ripped off.

And guess what, you are a little late to the debate about bitching of the season split release.

Michael Moncur "The big question is, if the Cylons knew that BSG would take Bulldog's raider on board, "

I think part of this episode that was not clear and was a setup for later is that we truly never DID find out what Bulldogs mission for the cylons was. I dont think killing Adama was it, I think that was just a side affect of him finding out Adama shot him down.

Corbett, the hybrid was not in this episode but was again in the credits. (unless you want to be geeky and say "but we saw the inside of the basestar so technically she was in it") I do hope these cut scenes end up somewhere. I love the hybrid and her nonsensical ramblings.

As for D'anna crawling out of bed with Gaius its part of her story I would guess. Alot of her issues are her inability to find love. Gaius mentioning her loves her on the torture table opened up this new aspect.
