George Takei joins cast of Heroes

by Julia Ward, posted Nov 18th 2006 1:29PM
George TakeiIn an utterly brilliant bit of casting news, George Takei, Star Trek's Captain Sulu, will be playing Hiro Nakamura's father on NBC's Heroes. You can expect Hiro's father to be showing up stateside to bring his super son back to Japan. If you've been watching the series, you know that won't go over too well considering that Hiro is on a mission to save New York City from imploding in five weeks, which - counting reruns - should be just in time for sweeps.

Masi Oka, who plays space-and-time-continuum-bending Hiro, told TV Guide, "I just hope I get to say, 'Dad! Sulu is my hero, not you!' The sci-fi fans would love it." I'm not even a huge sci-fi fan, and I love it. What else can you say? George Takei's awesomeness cannot be contained.

Did anyone catch the episode with George in it? and notice that the license plate number on the car that he left in was NCC 1701.

While Takei is one of my favorite actors EVER, my first thought is that he looks nothing like "Hiro" (no, Asians do NOT "all look alike" to ALL of us Whiteys), and is signficantly older than "Hiro". But now I'll be sure to watch the show myself, and not just because my husband watches it - which raction is doubtless what the casting of Takei was supposed to achieve.

Oh, how cool!!! I can't wait. Hiro is my favorite character on Heroes, and his buddy is so funny. I think they couldn't have found a better dad. Sparks will fly!!

I would have to disagree with the assessment of this move as "utterly brilliant", but I'll take a wait-and-see attitude about it. The injection of George Takei is the kind of gimmicky thing that the show doesn't need and has avoided so far. I'm actually kind of disappointed.

The Star Trek connection will only help the show. Now, how about moving it to pay cable so Ali Larter can get nekkid...

Just kidding.
