Charlie Brown's five worst cartoon moments

by Kevin Kelly, posted Nov 22nd 2006 8:31PM
It's a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Week! Charlie Brown, where have you been all these years? We've been missing you. We usually see you at the major holidays, like Christmas and Halloween, but to be honest those visits seem repetitive. What else have you been up to? Sure, you've taken some trips and had some valentines and such, but we've come to expect more Charlie Brown, and quite frankly, we need you these days. Please think about giving us Charlie Brown's Democratic Presidential Election, or something equally topical and timely.

10 Zen Monkeys has compiled a list of Charlie Brown's five worst cartoon moments. Check it out on their site which comes complete with YouTube embedded video and spot-on commentary. Continue onto see my thoughts about the list:
  • It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown -- Snoopy dances to disco music. Willingly. This was a poorly timed (1984) effort to capitalize on the disco craze which was already well out the door. Nothing can top the dancing in the A Charlie Brown Christmas special, and this painfully proves it.
  • Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown -- Linus' blanket saves people from a burning house, ooh la la! I actually remember going to a dank theater somewhere in Dallas to see this when it came out. I also remembering thinking Linus was the man for having a little French girl flirt with him.
  • Snoopy, Come Home -- "No dogs allowed" rang in my ears for years after seeing this one. Snoopy abandons Charlie Brown! It's impossible not to cry when you see this, no matter how old you are. Snoopy leaves Charlie Brown for his original owner, who turns out to be a little girl in a hospital. Who are we supposed to root for here?
  • Why, Charlie Brown, Why? -- Charlie Brown spreads information about everything from Cheerios, to insurance, to Zingers, to the military. But the head-scratchiest cartoon of them all is the 1990 Why, Charlie Brown, Why? special that features a little girl battling leukemia. It's meant to teach kids about dealing with cancer and possibly death, but the little girl recovers, and grows all of her hair back after chemo. I'm on the fence about this one because it's good to see a popular character trying to help kids deal with cancer, but the show was off-kilter and didn't really work.
  • Peanuts Reunion on Family Guy -- Granted, it's a parody of Peanuts, but it sure makes you hate the Family Guy writers for messing with good old Charlie Brown. Lucy whipped the ball away from them at the last second and they totally missed the mark. Augh!
A search of upcoming TV listings tells me that it is apparently not A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving as reported at the top of this post. ABC showed the special on Monday. What gives? That was one of my favorite shows to watch on Thanksgiving Eve while mom baked in the kitchen and dad tried to rig a smoker together for the turkey. Although I'd prefer to eat with the Peanuts crew, because popcorn and toast sound like a great Thanksgiving dinner to me.

What are some of your favorite (or non-favorite) Charlie Brown moments?
