ER: Scoop and Run

by Richard Keller, posted Nov 24th 2006 8:30AM

Abby Lockhart(S13E09) I'm with my brother Joel about new programming during Thanksgiving. Out of all the holidays we celebrate Thanksgiving should be the one that never has new episodes, even if it falls in the heart of the November sweeps. Why? Well, after ingesting so much sleep-inducing food it's hard to concentrate. If anything, Thanksgiving evenings should be reserved for three-hour long historical-period movies that feature plenty of silent scenes. You know, so you can get some sleep.

Okay, whining over, let's discuss this week's 'ER Event'.

It was 'Abby Lockhart: Action Hero' this week. She's dropping down the line of a rescue transport, attempting to rescue people off of a overturned bus that is hanging perilously over a ravine, and then jumping off said bus as it plummets into said ravine. She even gets the better of the rescue transport team who are, for lack of a better term, arrogant asses. She reminded me of Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October when he told the copter pilot to continue looking for the Dallas even though they were down to a reserve tank of fuel.

I actually thought the Abby scenes were done quite well. From the promos it seemed that this would be an Abby-centric episode. While hers was the primary plot there were other sub-stories going on at County General. I also liked this stronger, more confident Abby. I am very glad that the producers of ER have finally let her get past her demons and actually work at becoming a very fine doctor. Less whining and more stability is making for a better show. I just hope and pray that they don't allow Forrest Whitaker's character, Curtis Ames, do something to destroy that.

Okay, here's a question for you: why isn't Sara Gilbert a regular on ER? Yes, I know that she has a role on The Class, but I have a feeling that a medical drama that has been running for 13 seasons would be a bit more stable for her than a sitcom that isn't getting the best of ratings. As shown in this episode, which probably marks one of her longest appearances to date, she has lots of potential as Doctor Jane Figler. While there is now stability in the staff over in the emergency room (Thank God) a few more doctors in the rotation couldn't hurt.

Now, time for our weekly Neela and Gates update. Awfully embarrassing for Neela to be found in bed with Tony by the woman he lives with and her daughter. I'll tell you, our little Doctor Rasgotra doesn't mess around when it comes to being with men she likes. She was very upfront with her feelings when Gallant returned from Iraq the first time around, and she's doing the same thing with Gates. Personally, I think that she and Tony would make a better couple than her and Ray would.

I think that's about it for this week (too much turkey is making me sleepy). Let me just say that I am really enjoying this season of ER so far. It's nice to have some happy endings once in awhile (like tonight's Thanksgiving feast for the staff, courtesy of Luka) and see a bit of humor interjected amongst the drama. I think ER was missing that over the last few seasons as it adjusted to so many cast members coming and going. Now that all of the old guys and gals are gone it's good to see the new group gel.

New episode next week. Archie Morris returns. We'll see you in seven days.

Sara Gilbert didn't become a regular because she was signed to a show on the WB. Of course, it got canned... not sure if she will at some point. Maybe it's a "you snooze, you lose" thing.

I do and will find her relationship with that bald doctor completely unbelievable.

Also, I think the whole Neela/Gates thing seems a bit too "Grey's Anatomy." Like they are trying too hard or something. It doesn't feel like an "ER" relationship.

I was kind of glad to see a new episode, even though I wasn't expecting it. It was a decent one, although not an "event" by my "ER" standards.

Well, since I commented earlier about not liking new shows on Thanksgiving night, it would be different if my guests watched ER or CSI regularly, but they don't. That is where the difficulty comes in - I have my kids here, with their spouses, and I only see them a couple of times a year because they live WAY AWAY from here. AND it is very rare that they are here at the same time, so this is a time that I want to spend with them, catching up on what they are doing, laughing, just generally hanging out, having a good time. We have a very close family, emotionally, just not geographically! What am I supposed to do, say, OH, by the way, I need to keep up with this fictional show about people, who don't really exist, being murdered and/or dying, on this wonderful family day with my wonderful children that I love so much? If you have little kids, or people who leave to go home the same day, well then yeah, that would be no problem to catch a couple of new shows! So, thank God for TiVo and The Office, Season II on DVD. We had a blast watching four episodes, deleted scenes, bloopers, just laughing, eating too much, and drinking a little wine! The kids will be heading back to their respective states too soon and I will have plenty of time to watch television, too much time, in fact. And that is all I have to say about that.

I'm all for new programming, whenever it's on. If it's such a chore to watch it, maybe you shouldn't be watching it at all. Of course, you're talking about ER, so I can understand the difficulty.

I whole heartedly DISAGREE with you guys about new episodes. I remember as a kid hating the fact that all the usual programming was pre-empted for some stupid movie or they would just show reruns of last year's thanksgiving themed episodes of the shows I wanted to watch after having to deal with my family all day!

I dig it. New CSI. New ER.
Good times.

mmm....cheesy

Sara Gilbert isn't a regular because the writers/producers haven't made her one yet. It rarely ever has anything to do with the actor.

I was quite relieved to see the little TiVo light come on at 9 letting me know that ER was being recorded, but I am like you, I don't want to have to watch something new on a holiday! I have a house full up people, dishes are still everywhere, I have had enough cake/sweets to sink a ship (I know, that isn't very original, but it is still fairly early!), and my daughter and her hub brought the second season of The Office on dvd so we watched that for hours, a much better holiday viewing than say, people possibly dying!!!! And nothing says Thanksgiving like bloopers and cake!!!!!! After everyone leaves, I may get around to watching ER, but to be honest, just reading TV Squad really tells me enough about the show sometimes. So, keep up the good work!!!!

I was terrified the whole episode that they were going to kill of Abby. Helicopters stalk the ER staff like a raging beast. Buses are also an everpresent nemesis (didn't one of those crash into the ER once? or was it an 18 wheeler? Some huge vehicle anyway.)

No one from ER should ever be allowed near a helicopter and they should close the helipad. ;)

I fell asleep and never got to watch this episode. I totally agree that there should NOT be first run episodes scheduled for TG night.

How 'bout the kinder, gentler Kerry Weaver this year? She's ditched the cane and isn't throwing her colleagues under the bus just to get ahead anymore. The whole fling with her TV producer might also get interesting as time goes on...
