Comic Relief raises $4 million

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 27th 2006 7:29PM
comic reliefLast week's Comic Relief telethon raised $4 million for victims of Hurricane Katrina. It aired simultaneously on TBS, HBO and AOL. Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal headlined the Comic Relief telecasts of the 1980s to raise money and awareness about homelessness. The original Comic Relief stage shows raised about $50 million.

Did anybody watch Comic Relief on November 18th? I caught a little bit of it but had to turn it off because A) Robin Williams is no longer funny, and B) Dane Cook isn't funny either. I was actually more interested in the on-location stories about the current situation in New Orleans than the performances by a long list of guest comedians.

Dane Cook is a little too raunchy for the mild comedy style of the other comedians at the Comic Relief show. He's known for typical, vulgar, party animal/frat boy humor, typical guy stuff. As if he'd rather be in some late night club at 12 midnight partying the night away. I think that Robin Williams is really past his prime and should leave the stage while he's still on top. He's not as funny as he used to--still doing the same kinds of people impressions as he did 5 years ago. I think that his alcohol abuse had really affected his comedy act.

Yeah, I was in Vegas for the Comedy Festival and went to go see Dane Cook and Bob Saget. Dane cook seemed like he was phoning it in. He didn't seem into his act as he usually is. On the other hand, Bob Saget is one of the dirtiest, raunchiest men on the planet. He was great. Plus Craig Ferguson and Louie CK were surprise guests during Bob Saget's show. Dane had . . . Gary Gulman.

I am unaware of any time in which Robin Williams was funny. Maybe-- maybe as the subject of game show Billy williams, but nothing he did on purpose.

I saw the last comic, and he was good, nothing new, crazy white people kind of stuff, but a good performance. Then I saw Robin, Billy, and Whoopie stroll out and I just kicked straight into the plasma because I couldn't find the remote fast enough. Tough lesson.

Williams isn't funny anymore because he's actually off the blow now. But he'll start again I'm sure.
