Friends producer trashes current sitcom scene

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 28th 2006 1:06PM
Kevin BrightDigital Spy has a quick article about Kevin Bright, one of the executive producers of Friends. Right now, he's not working in TV, and has decided to teach a course about directing sitcoms. Why? Because, according to Bright, the current state of sitcoms on US television is pretty lame.

"We're in a bad place," Bright said. "Since Will and Grace I haven't seen one original idea on network TV." (Update: here's a link to the original Boston Globe article this quote came from. Looks like he doesn't absolve himself from blame here -- remember Joey? Thanks to Katie S. for pointing this out.)

Mind you, this includes The Class, which is being produced by David Crane, one of Bright's partners on Friends. I wonder if Mr. Crane gave Bright a call when word of this got back to him. Anyway, I think Bright is being too harsh; yes, there are not a lot of sitcoms out there right now, but most of the ones that are on are pretty fresh and funny (at least until According to Jim comes back from hiatus). Even The Class started with a pretty unique premise, even if it's taking time for it to figure out how to juggle all its characters (last night's episode was the first that did a good job of it). It's not like Bright should be bitter; Friends made him a nice pot of "F you" money.

You can add "My Boys" to the list of good sitcoms out there now.

Here's the actual full-length article.
The Digital Spy article was just a brief reference

Wait a second, one of the talentless ass-clowns behind the totally by-the-numbers-mindnumbingly-infantile Friends is bitching about TV sitcoms?

While I agree that most TV sitcoms blow, i'd contend they have sucked for 20 years and Friends was part of the problem. The only sitcoms worth watching:

Entourage
The Office
My Name is Earl

50/50 shot at being funny:
30 Rock

Best sitcom ever:
Arrested Development

One similarity amongst all of them: no live audience or laugh track to tell you when to giggle.

There's hardly any great sitcoms on the air right now, the Office being the notable exception. The first year of that show was just okay, but they really hit their stride by the 2nd and 3rd years.

I'm sorry, but I just don't find Two and Half Men funny. I've tried to get into it and have watched on several occasions, and each time I think to myself what is so funny about this show?! It's stupid like Adventures of Old Christine or According to Jim.

Scrubs has been gone for a while now, but I understand is returning. It's really hard to keep up with a show that keeps changning nights. I don't know, this is one of those shows that is sort of near the end of it's life.

My Name is Earl is funny, in an offbeat sort of way, but it's not one of those shows that I have to catch every week.

Have never seen 30 Rock, and only caught How I met your Mother recently, which was surprisingly funny.

There is one new show coming to CBS that I saw during a sneak preview which was hilarious. I'm not sure if they'll keep the title, but it was called Rules of Engagement. If it shows up on the air, be sure to catch it.

I agree with #7's comment, Friends was original? The age of the sitcoms has been overshadowed by the serial drama, but the sitcoms nowadays are 100 times better than Friends or Will and Grace could've ever hoped to be.

The Office and Arrested Development blew Friends out of the water. No more 'one couch' sitcoms!

I can't believe I'm the first to conjure "Arrested Development," which happened "since Will & Grace" originally aired.

The perpetrator of one of the blandest and, as the seasons progressed, most moronic sitcoms in the last decade accuses other shows of being brain-dead? WOW.

...Who exactly is buying that gigantic all-season, every-show-in-the-series DVD set of "Friends", anyway? It's on TV like 6 times a day. I can't imagine wanting to keep & treasure them.

The Class is ok, its good filler between HIMYM and Heroes

At least none of the sitcoms currently on the air are so desperate that they have added a monkey to the cast.
