Veronica Mars: Spit & Eggs

veronica mars mac
(S03E09) This episode was just way too fast for a partial-season ender. While we got answers for the bulk of the episode, there are definitely some questions left hanging around unanswered. But I'll get into those later.

My first thought when Veronica was running away in the opening scene was that it was unlikely that her pursuer was a girl. I just couldn't see her fleeing away from one of the feminiazis, no matter how menacing she was nor the fact that I, for one, would run away from that she-bitch in a dark dorm hallway. Yiieee.

Boy, way to make Mac's reappearance seem ... insignificant. Not even a clever joke about how she's been so out of the picture the past, oh, most of the season. I will say that I didn't realize how much I missed her character until she was back, and I hope she's not kept away too much when the show returns (which I imagine won't be until next year). Great Mac shirt quote of the show: 'Ask me about my STD.'

How many times is Veronica going to get a date rape drug? The poor girl's going to dehydrate from not trusting a stray drop of water from anything other than her home faucet. Hopefully she kept a bunch of those great rape coasters (baddum-chh!)

Dean O'Dell listening to Olivia Newton-John in his car. Classic scene. Clearly anyone learning this would see that putting a bullet in his head was the only sane thing to do. My guess is it's Tim the TA, pissed off that the Dean let the fraternities back on campus, since they're the ones dangling all that temptation in front of his now ex-girlfriend Bonnie. Obviously Tim's been keeping tabs on Bonnie's conquests, with all the circled Pi-Sigs on his board-o-clues.

Now, as for the loose ends -- which I admit we have plenty of time to still wrap up -- some things don't yet add up:

- Why were the girls' heads shaved (and then the hair kept)?
- What was Mercer doing raping the girls anyway, and why would Moe help him if he wasn't raping the girls? Was Moe just into the hair?
- If Mercer's show was a call-in show, how did he field requests if he was playing a recording? Didn't anyone catch on that he wasn't picking up the calls?
- What's the significance of there being no hair or semen at the rape scenes? As far as I could tell, Mercer had hairy legs (the nasty unicorn horn pull-out scene), so how would he be so easily cleaning up after himself?
- What did Dick to do "screw up" like he said in the first episode? Maybe he made mention of it, but I can't recall.

So now we're left with the dean murdered, eggs all over his window. Did he take out his cheating wife or her co-conspirator? I guess we'll need to wait a while to find that out, but until then it's hard to make a good guess. Meanwhile Logan will be putting some hurt on Mercer at Neptune PD.

Quote of the episode:
Veronica: "Great job, Dick. I'm sure you won that debate."
Logan: "Well, he's a master debater."

I expect that the "Perfect Murder" paper will definitely figure in. Remember that Tim said he was going to post Veronica's online. I expect that her plan from the paper was used to kill the Dean. Thus tying in the major suspects, the Professor and Tim, and allowing anyone to have found it online so as to expand the suspect pool.

I would like to address your loose ends:
1. the girls hair was shaved because Mercer is crazy. I mean, what more explanation do u need? he's a rapist, nothing they do makes sense. also, don't rapists usually keep mementos?
2. Mercer and Moe were in the sociology experiment together, they both mentioned that episode how it changed their lives or something. That's why Moe was helping Mercer. Also, I think its possible that Moe might have done one of the rapes himself, they never said he didn't. That would be why he'd have hair in his closet.
3. I dont the answer to this one, but i'm sure they'll explain... they always do.
4. I bet they just mentioned no hair and semen at the scenes because that makes it way harder to solve the rapes.
5. Yea, i'm sure Dick's comment was about his brother.

Also, did u not see the ridiculous scene the TA made at that party? That was completely staged. I bet that's all gonna come up again. I know Rob Thomas and the writers are so super awesome that they've been planting clues now for mysteries that haven't even come up yet, so I bet that's what that was.

Someone asked if Logan was going to be on the show still now that they've broken up. It is obvious to me that this person has not seen Seasons 1 and 2. It is completely imperative that you rent those right now because they are utterly amazing and you must watch. Logan is not going anywhere.

I agree with those who want more of Weevil, and Mac on the show. Don't underappreciate Lamb, he should show up more too. (How awesome was it that Veronica killed Lamb in her paper!! I love it.) But if i ever read anything again that says a vmars viewer is willing to sacrifice episodes for anything, I will kill myself.

I thought the whole thing ended way to quickly - it was almost like lets get this rape mess sorted out so we can introduce the next mystery. Good to see Mac back, although i though her scenes could have been played out better.

I loved the end of the episode when Logan smashed up the police car to get into the same jail cell as Mercer. That was quality!

Other than that i thought the best thing about the episode was how the choice of music played into the episode well LOL.

The episodes at the beginning of this season didn't seem quite up to par with the great ones from the previous two, but each episode gave me a little more faith to stick it out, because it was getting better. I was a little nervous that because the show seemed a bit dumbed down that it was going to lose some viewers, but after last night's episode, my faith in the series is COMPLETELY restored. I have no doubts, and even if the show doesn't get picked up for a fourth season, I will be happy that it ended strong. So anyways, about last night- WOW! I was on edge the entire time, and I missed some important things the first time around, but was able to pick up some major clues after rewatching it. For instance, I thought I heard Mercer yell "Prisoner" or something to Moe, but wasn't certain, but the second time around I heard Moe plea to Mercer "I'm sorry, sir" And Mercer had in fact addressed Moe as "Prisoner." This got me thinking to the episode where Logan and Wallace were in the experiment for their sociology class, and then I remember Moe saying to Wallace that is was "Life changing" or something along those lines, but we didn't really see anything change with either Wallace or Logan after the experiment was finished, so we all probably just dismissed it. And maybe the Mercer-Moe Prisoner/Guard relationship is unrelated to the experiment, Except- (Here's the kicker) I completely missed this the first time around, as I'm sure many of you did, because we just weren't thinking about it, but when Veronica is in Moe's room and sees the picture on the wall of Mercer and Moe, Mercer is wearing a camoflauge shirt, and Moe is wearing a blue striped shirt identical to the ones worn by all of the people in the expiriment! I can't wait to see how this plans out, but I'm really excited!

See I just figured she knew he wasn't around, and the response was rather standard (something like "sure, always." not "we haven't played xxx in ages, so sure!"

Presuming, or at least, hoping it all gets cleared up. Little gutted that Kendall isn't the second mystery, as she was 'upgraded' from dead to "missing" recently.

Upon re-watching, I realized that Veronica caught on to Mercer not because Mercer had been at the party -- which I totally thought he was -- but just because the tape made a wobbly sound as somebody was making a request.

(Sorry that my previous post repeats a lot of info -- I didn't realize there were more than 20 replies when I wrote it so I hadn't read those.)

I thought this episode was fantastic! Great suspense and for the first time, I didn't have the whodunit figured out ahead of time. Sure, there are some loose ends, like what Mercer's motive was, but I figure we will get it explained in the next episode, whenever that will be.

And Margaret, if you haven't seen seasons one and two, now would be a good time to get the DVDs and get caught up. Wait until you see Logan in early S1, then you will *really* wonder what she sees in him. Heh. But all will be revealed in due time.

Mercer was raping the girls because he's a control freak.

Moe was helping Mercer because he still had control over him from the prison guard experiment the previous year. The photo on Moe's wall the Veronica saw was them in their uniforms. Moe called Mercer "Sir" and Mercer called him "Prisoner."

Somebody pointed out on the TWOP boards that this f'd-up case of the "Stockholm Syndrom" proves that Patty Hearst wasn't just stunt-casting -- she was a clue. God, I love this show.

Also, I assumed there wasn't any physical evidence because (a) condoms and (b) Moe was the clean-up man after the rapes (which is why he kept all the hair for himself -- he didn't get the sex but he still got the trophy -- CREEPY btw)

Veronica realized Mercer was the rapist when she heard the call-in request after the band was done performing -- since she'd already seen Mercer at the party.

Sincer there were only two -- maybe three -- rapes that took place during Mercer's show, it wouldn't have necessarily seemed that obvious to those calling in -- especially if he wasn't gone for the whole show and just filled in the time he was gone with pre-recorded requests.

I'm not 100% certain but I believe that the rape that took place while Mercer was in Mexico with Logan was one of them that was determined to be faked by the girls at the Lilith House.

Most excellent episode! I'm glad I started watching VM this season. Since I don't have the history with the show, I couldn't quite understand what Veronica saw in a guy like Logan. But after last night with the very honest breakup speech, and getting himself thrown in jail to exact a little personal justice for Veronica's terror, I LoVe him too!
