House: Finding Judas

by Tom Biro, posted Nov 29th 2006 7:27AM
House - Chase(S0309) While this show usually isn't "spun" too much in its promos for the next episodes -- something I'm grateful for -- I'm even more grateful that they don't put the titles of the particular episodes at the beginning of each, because this week's would probably have made some people feel a bit ill. "Finding Judas" is one of the more specific ones we've seen that weren't trying to be punny or something else, and as it turns out, it wasn't House that was looking for the "Judas" in question, it was more like we were, or that his team and colleagues were trying to find the Judas within. Or, even better, that Tritter knew that if he pushed enough buttons, that he would find the Judas in House's life.

The case in question this week was quite interesting, as well. A little girl who seems to have an allergy to everything, or perhaps an infection that makes her look allergic to everything, or maybe a flesh-eating disease, or could it be something else? Who knows. All that was clear here was that with extra pressure being put on Chase, Foreman, Cuddy, Cameron, and Wilson, something would probably give - or would it?

Now, back to those promos we were talking about. We pretty much knew that someone was going to say something about House and his drug habit. The writers did a great job at framing Chase - even during the episode - to make us think that he'd be the one to drop the bombshell, but apparently even Detective Tritter saw him as the easy mark that would either sell himself out to the team and cause a rift, or make House mad. Turns out that it almost didn't matter what he did with regard to those guys, as Wilson was the straw that broke. Dr. Wilson, who had pretty much given up his oncology practice due to his inability to prescribe medication to cancer patients, is pretty much just serving time as a clinic doc, mixed in with serving himself peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the staff kitchen. As much as he gets agitated from week to week with what House is doing, it's got to be clear that he is a real friend to House, even as House steals half of his sandwich, drives away on his motorcycle as Wilson is sitting on a bench waiting for a bus, and so on. It's also pretty clear that having that friend in the first place is what's going to get House in trouble.

We also saw Cuddy in a completely different place. While she's obviously practiced medicine or been really involved in things from time to time in this show's 2 1/2 previous seasons worth of episodes, we got to see her not only take on a child as her guardian, but be involved in a surgical procedure and follow that up with trying to help the girl out by cooling her in a shower. To boot, we got to see her feelings hurt in a way that might as well have been as bad as the spear in Jesus' side, if we're going to use the biblical references this week and all.

While we're on that theme, I'd say that asking for "30 pieces of silver" has to be one of the more interesting comments to be uttered from a character on this show. I'd also say that House's knowledge that Chase wasn't the real reason that Tritter had let go of the bank accounts (or at least his allusion that it wasn't him, possibly, and that he just wanted to clear himself with his colleagues) means that he knows the drill, and he is obviously aware of the buttons being pushed. What he might not know, however, is that Wilson truly walked the walk once he saw what would happen if Chase did so. Sure, House is going to have "a decision to make" in the next episode (two weeks!), but he's also going to have to figure out how to deal with Wilson, if it turns out that he finds out who told Tritter the deal. At the end of the day, Wilson helps himself by "helping" a friend, but could it be that he saw the end of Chase's career if the young doc had sold out his boss, and knowing what he had already given up that he needed to just bite the bullet?

House is screwing up, not because he is in pain, but because he is going through withdraw. Pay close attention to the story lines, remember the one w/ the arm and the cane, his arm didn't really hurt, he just was trying to get someone to give him drugs.

He misdiagnosed because when you are going through opiate withdraw you cant think. Pretty soon he'll be climbing the walls and throwing up.

Wilson went to Tritter because he knows all this, and realizes that its just going to get worse.

To Buzmeg:
"House it's just a TV show, and a wonderfully elaborated by their producers, executors and of course the amazingly casting, it's just a show and not a real life of medical hospitalfrom where you have to extract the entertainment. Remember what happened with the audience of Orson Welles' radio theater play "...something with Descending from Mars" in 70's? They got panicked and ended with a mass of suicides. But since you are a an American that believes anything that "flyes" of course you have to oppose to something through the shield of Constitutional rights, I think you need more growing up. "House" it's an ingenious show, and addresses only to (probably) its own audience that you don't make part yet. Lecturer

I love this show, been in from the first episode, I do miss the humor a bit, but Im finding the tritter situ more interesting as it goes on, ( I hated it before)
House is a dick, no doubt and he also is doing things that are beyond the scope of his being a total jerk due to his addiction.
When Tritter told Cuddy, "he is in the care of Doctors, the law is the last resort".
That is true in many cases. I work in a rehab and we have tons of Dr's and Nurses, ( specialists) come in on diversion programs,( addicted to fentanyl and vicodin , and liquid cocaine and morphine to name a few drugs) and the most egotistical and God complex ones come back again and again, and then they lose their license.
I've often thought how amazing it is that some of the smartest people I met, don't really believe they will lose their license! But trust me, they do.
Really for Wilson to flip on him, is an act of compassion and true friendship.
Hardly a Judas.

I love the acerbic personality of House and enjoy the show. However, whomever is the consulting MD for the show really blew it this week. So many errors in the script. For example, if you are concerned about a antibiotic allergic reaction there is no difference between using a broad spectrum or narrow spectrum antibiotic (Cuddy's "unforgivable" mistake). The chosen antibiotic was not an "antibiotic." There were others, including the fact that amputation is not the first line of defense for necrotizing bacteria infection. It was disappointing to identify so many medical errors in a somewhat realistic "drama: by someone that has no medical training (me).

And Yes, I agree I am tired of the Tritter story line. It has been played too long and hard, it is annoying, and does not add to the show.

I think Tritter will end up sick too. They never said what was wrong with him from the first visit and he has been chewing that gum like a cow and we all know from previous shows what to much Nicorette will do to you. I love that he had his seceret stash hidded in the Lupus book then said that it was the best place to hide it because it is never Lupus, espceialy since his first diagnosis always contains Lupus! LOVE IT!!

David Morse is doing a tremendous job as Tritter. Every week, I end up so pissed off at this guy. This is my first season watching House, and I think its awesome. Its kind of ironic, rooting for the drug addicted Dr. and hoping he gets his fix each week.

Okay here is my call for how the Tritter storyline is going to end:
Tritter comes extremely close to putting the final nail in House's coffin when out of left field, Tritter suddenly becomes extremely and mysteriously ill. Guess who has to save his life? Then the rest of the episode would be about House not wanting to treat Tritter, Tritter not wanting treatment from house, yadda yadda yadda, they cure him, and somehow Tritter makes everything go away when he realizes the kind of doctor he'd be putting away: a jerk who saves lives.

Kind of a 'deus ex machinima' solution, but it would definitely be one of the more interesting episodes...

Love that line, too, Stevie.

I adore this show, but it is deeply flawed, I think. The writers have created a marvelous set of characters but they seem not to be able to move them along emotionally unless they toss a hand grenade into the mix every now and again. Vogler, Stacy, Tritter. It's as though the writers come to an impasse and they need a catalyst. The handgrenadecatalyst sticks around long enough to stir up everyone, sometimes, as with the brilliant "Three Stories" episode, to actually reveal something important about the characters and to shift or throw off balance some of the relationships. Stronger writers don't need hand grenades, but it does make the show interesting and provocative. That's why I don't "hate" Tritter. He's just a tool the writers are using to reveal something, to move the characters along.

I find all the fuss over the legal and medical discrepancies totally irrelevant since these things obviously do not matter to the writers. This is not a show about medicine or the law. If you're going to watch House you need to get over the idea that the medical and legal issues are always going to make sense. House is a doctor because medical shows are full of possibilities for raising questions of morality and life & death and love and hate and relationships.

I love Chase. Even his name is evocative. He and House have been headed for what happened last night for so long. He's the one of the three young doctors who is most like House. That scene with Chase and Wilson was great. I like Wilson more and more with every episode. His "betrayal" runs the risk of destroying his relationship with his best friend, which is something he's fought so hard not to do, and yet, it's the most loving thing he could do now. He knows that House is destroying himself (he hit Chase, who is almost a mirror image of himself) and he has to save him. And, as with the story of Jesus, I think somewhere deep inside House, he knows who the betrayer is and is somehow hoping he'll get on with what he has to do. I always believe that Jesus forgave Judas for what he did, just as I believe House will forgive Wilson.

best line:
"Beckett was going to name his play "Waiting for House's Approval," but..."

i'm digging the tritter arc, and i think david morse is as great an actor as everyone else on the show -- that is to say, amazing -- he totally gives me the creeps.
i'd like to point out that wilson isn't turning judas to help chase in some way, as was implied by someone up there (wtf?).
the girl had a genetic disease that caused her to react negatively to light. how could you have missed that?
another obvious point that's apparently getting missed: house is screwing up b/c he's in pain.
as for being house's patient, it's easy: go in w/ something weird, get a lumbar puncture, have your house broken into, go thru at least 3 horrible reactions and put into a coma or brought to the brink of death, maybe a few times, GET flesh-eating bacteria, wake up and find out if you take some pills you'll be right as rain and nothing will ever ever be wrong with you again.

House rules!
