How long does it take to light a tree?

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 29th 2006 6:16PM
Rockefeller Center treeNo, it's not the start of a dumb joke. I'm sincerely asking you good folks at TVS the question, because it seems like the answer would be the same since Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb: about half a second.

Somehow, NBC executives think it takes a lot longer than that: an hour, to be exact. That's how long tonight's special, Christmas in Rockefeller Center, will last. The 74th Rock Center tree-lighting ceremony, hosted by Ann Curry and Al Roker, will be padded with performances Christina Aguilera, Taylor Hicks, Enya, John Legend, Sarah McLachlan, and others. If you live in the New York area, you'll actually get two hours to bask in the tree's darkness; WNBC will begin airing their special at 7, and the rest of the country will join them at 8. And you thought New Yorkers moved faster than the rest of the country.

Anyway, all the performances lead up to the climactic last thirty seconds of the show, when [SPOILER ALERT!] the tree will be lit. Not sure what they're going to do with the last twenty-nine-and-a-half seconds, but I'm sure they'll think of something.

Man, Bah-humbug to you! Where is your christmas spirit? Anyways, it's just like dancing with the stars or american idol -- where you wait for the last minute to see what you've been waiting for.

And number three, that bothers me too. I remember years ago they would have multicolored lights and maybe a blueish majority or more white then colored. I think after 9-11 they desided they need to do red-white-blue or just white because I can't remember the last colored lights they had.

I like how they do it, kind of... The singing of songs is great, but the way they are sung are terrible. Plus every year they show the tree for about 4 seconds because they ran over. Why not light the tree FIRST and sing songs with the tree in the background. It will be like the F-You Log.

Its painful.. Same damn thing every year. A million idiots cram the streets. They shut down traffic in Rush hour causing insane gridlock in all directions AND THE TREE LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME WAY IT LOOKED LAST YEAR AND THE YEAR BEFORE THAT ETC ETC ETC

Joel, your article cracked me up. I avoid these shows (and just about anything with Al Roker) like the plague.
