"Rowdy" Roddy Piper diagnosed with lymphoma

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 29th 2006 6:35PM
roddy piper"Rowdy" Roddy Piper, one of the most charismatic characters on televised wrestling in the 1980s, has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Up until two weeks ago, Piper, 52, was touring Europe with World Wrestling Entertainment, but then he returned to Canada to have a doctor check out discomfort in his back. It turns out, he has a cancerous tumor on a disc on his spine. He'll begin treatment immediately, with the support of his wife and four children. Piper told a Canadian newspaper that he's determined to defeat the cancer.

Piper shared the wrestling spotlight with Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan in the 1980s, starring in the first of the Wrestlemania events. He even co-starred in a Saturday morning cartoon with fellow wrestlers. Piper's real name is Roderick George Toombs, but he chose Roddy Piper as his wrestling alter-ego, complete with bagpipe and Scottish "rage".

Dear Roddy:
I hope this gets to you. I am sorry to hear about your
sad news, but I want you to know I am praying for you.
You have always been a fighter, since you were a young
man in Canada to the glory days of the WWF and yes your
wonderful movie collaboration with director John Carpenters
They Live!
Roddy, you were the Yin to Hulk Hogans Yan. You carved
a niche in Wrestling history in the 80's and to this
day are a legend in the sports entertainment field.
I know you will fight this illness just as you have
been fighting since your young days of yore.
You've made me mad, you've mad me laugh and now you
have me sad, but you did not get the nickname of The
Rowdy One for nothing. I know you will fight this with
everything you've got, you never walked away from a
fight in your life, and I know you won't now.
Just remember I love you and there are many more that
feel like me. We are all in your corner again and we
are all rooting for you to come out with your hand
raised high, the way a champion does!
I love you brother, beat this thing and I hope you
nothing but the best. I hope to meet you some day
and it will be my honor. Fight like Hell Rowdy Roddy
Piper!

Get well Roddy. You are one of the most colorful characters EVER in the wrestling entertainment business next to Jesse Ventura and Jerry Lawler as the most colorful talkers. You will beat the cancer with a positive attitude.

You can beat this, Roddy! Kick it like you did the rump of Jerry Lawler, like those alien creeps in They Live, and those nasty toadies from Frog Town! Fight with everything you got, Hot Rod!
Was oh so many years ago while flipping channels when I paused ... a camera watched a man stride down the aisle, get into a ring, and give a meanie some well deserved thumping. You became the only reason I ever watched wrestling, Roddy. When you left for good, so did I.
Your movies and little television series appearances have run from silly to sweet and back again. You left Vince McMahon's grip rather than become a steroid adled hulk (at least that's what I believe). And now you've come back, only to have to leave again and battle something that scares me beyond words.
Let my thoughts and prayers mingle with those of your family, friends, and fans, and strengthen you for this battle. You are the best, Roddy! You are the HOT ROD, and you will win!

Rowdy, you were one of my favorites. You and your family are in my prayers as you go through this trying time. I know what a tough time this could be, being that my brother fought and lost his battle with lung cancer this year and my father is going through treatments for the prostate cancer that he had removed this past May. May God be with you and your family!!!! Cora
