Get ready for 24 hours of A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve

by Adam Finley, posted Dec 4th 2006 8:32PM
a christmas storyThat's right, the holidays are rife with tradition, and TBS is continuing with a tradition of its own by airing a 24-hour marathon of the modern holiday classic A Christmas Story starting at 8:00 pm on Christmas Eve. Who would have thought a movie directed by the guy who made Porky's and featuring Marvin the Hershey's Syrup Kid would become such a staple of the holiday season? Actually, it makes perfect sense. Bob Clark's film is incredibly heartwarming, but it also doesn't shy away from dark humor, and Peter Billingsly's Ralphie is the perfect blend of wide-eyed whimsy and basic human selfishness (note how he constantly abandons his little brother and leaves his friend Flick stuck frozen to a flagpole). Top off the whole thing with radio commentator Jean Shepard's narration from his book "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" and you've got a holiday movie only an evil robot wouldn't love.

I used to have fond memories of TNT as well. I would wake up in the middle of the night and just on a whim turn on the TV and TNT would be airing any number of rarely seen but fabulous movies like The Heroic Trio, Wing Chun, etc. I would grab a middle-of-the-night snack and set my bum down for a sleepless but enjoyable night. I propose that TNT/TBS go back to those olden tactics. I am guessing a lot of you a) haven't ever been treated to "TNT in the night," so you don't realize how good you could have it; b) haven't realized that every. year. that "can I pull my hair out" movie. runs. for 24 hours. straight! My brothers and I cringe every time we accidentally run into it - honestly. You have warm fuzzy feelings for this movie; I get the gag reflex. Sorry.

I have fond memories of TBS. Many years ago, my brother and sisters and I headed for the beckoning Christmas loot left by Santa at about 3 am. We couldn't turn on the light or run the chance of being yelled at by our parents that we were up too early. We always turned on the TV with its test pattern as a low level lamp when doing clandestine, early morning, not-supposed-to-be-up, kid stuff. I distinctly remember the channel being on TBS and they were running back to back Christmas specials. We kids were amazed and sat in front of the tv in aw and amazement at the wonderous parade of crap being broadcast. I think it was my first peek into Nirvana.

I love this movie. Though I don't think I've ever seen it from start to finish.

Correction: Well...if they want it that way, I will avoid TNT and TBS.

TNT marathons this movie every year, every Christmas, for 24 hrs. I don't care if it is a "classic;" I will be avoiding TNT like the plague, 4 days before and after, just to make sure I don't catch any residue of this annoying movie.

I am sorry - I had to get that out of my system.

I could have sworn the marathon of the movie was last year or some year previous on TNT and not TBS. Am I mistaken?
