Stargate, Atlantis, Painkiller Jane coming in April

by Brett Love, posted Dec 5th 2006 4:03PM
stargate atlantisWe've already mentioned that Battlestar is moving to Sundays on January 21st. It will be joined by the highly anticipated new series The Dresden Files. Now comes word that Sci Fi Friday's will return in April with the final ten episodes of Stargate, the continuation of the current season of Atlantis, and the new show Painkiller Jane. The press release also mentions new episodes of Ghost Hunters, the new season of Who Wants To Be A Superhero?, and 24 'pulse-pounding' original movies.

It's good to have a date for the Stargate return, but i am among those that just doesn't get what Sci Fi is doing with their scheduling. TV Squad reader Mack pointed out that the new Atlantis episodes are already airing in other markets, and a quick check of some torrent sites reveals that they are out there to be had. I didn't like the long break in the season when they did it with Farscape, and I don't like it now. With the serial nature of these shows, big breaks just don't work. 24 got it right.

Bah, no announcement on Series 3 of *Doctor Who* yet for SciFi? And here I was hoping we'd get them at the same time (for once) as the BBC will run them in the UK.

And what's the point of *Painkiller Jayne* without Emmanuelle Vaughier (sic)? Lame.

Me thinks they need to order some more material with Cerina Vincent to tide me over...

And death to *Stargate*. I want an actual sequel flick to the original film...and with Russell and Spader involved!

Seriously, is Sci-Fi trying to kill the Stargate franchise off? The middle of Season 10 of SG-1, if I remember correctly, ended right before the end of the September; and then they wait 8 months and then air the final 10 episodes!! Same thing for Atlantis. Does this make any sort of sense whatsoever?

I'll admit that, yes, I am watching the new Atlantis eps courtesy of that wonderful protocol known as BitTorrent. SG-1 will be finishing up the final 10 episodes on SkyOne starting the second week of January, and Skyone is running the full Season 10 nonstop.

I agree: Sci Fi's schedule was totally FUBAR this year. The network has really gone down the tubes since NBC bought Universal and all its various divisions. It's almost like they want the shows to fail -- just makes no sense. Even more silly is that with Atlantis returning in April it will run right into it's fourth season, which might be good thing, who knows. Sci Fi would be better off running their shows non-stoop from June through October -- no repeats. Of course, that would run them into the new fall season, but if viewers are already invested into the shows they will find them and watch them. Running Sci Fi Friday this summer without "BG" was a mistake and starting Galactica in October has proven disastrous for the show.

I can understand waiting to give Painkiller Jane a strong lead-in, but really, how strong of a lead-in is Atlantis these days. Now add into the equations that Atlantis fans have to wait for new episodes, so how many of those viewers are going to forget about the show and not come back when the series resumes?

this just proves that again Sci-Fi has no idea how to run their network. I wouldn't be suprised if they promised BSG a nice two season deal for 4 and 5 and then before 4 even airs they say "oh sorry.. no more" just like they did with Farscape.
