Much better episode! After last week's rough start Scrubs got back to normal. Where I had one or two chuckles last episode last week I got in some good belly laughs this time around.
This week's theme was parenthood. The main story was Carla going into labor and it was the funniest part of the episode. I mean, broadcasting live pictures of Carla's woo-hoo over the closed-circuit hospital television station was classic sitcom fare. And the comments coming from those watching the show were very amusing ("Oh look, Swamp Thing"). Plus, we also got to see Carla showing a bit more vulnerability than we normally see from her, and Turk nearly missing another important event in his life with Carla.
The second story involved J.D. and Kim and the question of whether or not they should keep their baby. Meh. It had its moments, but it felt a bit heavy-handed to me. The whole thing about the talking Jesus figure saying no to Kim on having an abortion felt a bit preachy. It's almost like something Aaron Sorkin would bring up on Studio 60, minus the talking Jesus figure. And I'm not saying that because I am pro- or anti-abortion (and if you want to have that debate please don't do it in the Comments section). It's more that it just didn't seem to fit the two characters' personalities. Nevertheless, the decision that was made at the end of the episode (I won't say what it is for you West Coast and DVR viewers) does move the story along for future episodes.
Perry and Jordan rounded out the episode. Before I go on here I'd like to ask a question: what the hell is going on with John McGinley's hair? All those large curls and . . . are those blond highlights? Anyway, back to the plot. It seems that Perry is being a bit too blunt when answering some of his son's questions and it's starting to get on Jordan's nerves. Eventually Perry succumbs to Jordan's withering looks and tones it down with Jack. Gosh, Perry and Jordan's relationship has changed alot over the last few seasons. I like them as a couple; they fit together well, even through all of the barbs and sniping they do.
While we're talking about relationships I've noticed a change in the relationship between Bob Kelso and the rest of the staff. A good portion of the cranky, 'I don't give a crap' attitude is gone. I wouldn't say he's softened up, but he's certainly become more civilized. I see this in particular in his relationship with Perry. I can't remember the last time those two got into a verbal flobbernocker. Perhaps I missed an episode where they resolved their differences.
