Battlestar Galactica: The Eye of Jupiter

(S03E11) You could tell right away from the "previously on" that this was going to be a huge episode. Not that it being the fall finale wasn't enough. Though would you put it past them to end this with a huge cliffhanger? I didn't think so.

How is it that Tyrol is able to somehow hear a strange calling from the far away temple, when all others seemed deaf to it? It definitely makes you wonder if he may be a sleeper Cylon, though it's not as though humans haven't exhibited strange behavior before. In fact there are a couple of other things that happen in this episode that feel very coincidental -- the humans and Cylons converging on the same planet at the same time, the sun about to supernova.

Tyrol's involvement does seem oddly placed, though. The sudden feelings he has when in the temple, for example. And what seems like his eventual clueing-in about what and where the Eye of Jupiter exists. There's definitely much more to Tyrol than we've come to know, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Is he the chosen one the Hyrid spoke of, over and over?

Random thought: I wish we could have heard the conversation between Adama and Baltar that actually convinced them that sending multiple Cylons onto the Galactica was an OK idea. Why the need for talk in person anyway?

I don't think we saw such a revealing of the emotional threesome action going on between Baltar, Caprica and D'Anna. Sure we saw them sleeping together often, though there was a much more intimate scene in this episode. There's a pretty famous science fiction book that has a theme of trinity relationships, of which name escapes me for some reason. I wonder if the writers are taking off on that theme here. Or maybe it's just hot, which is fine, of course.

And sort-of on that topic, it's interesting how marriage is considered a sacrament, though their religion of believing in multiple gods is so different than Earth's Christianity.

Some folks felt that we were sort-of left hanging after the fight episode with Starbuck and Apollo, though we finally see how that later fared tonight. Not a ton to go on quite yet, though from the incredibly lackluster previews for the next episode, we see there should be a lot more to that when we return. (Seriously though, that is the preview we're left with to sit on for a month? Gah.)

Sharon finding out about Hera was inevitable, and soon. We all knew that. A big controversy going on in the comments for the past few weeks was whether or not Adama knew about Hera being alive along with Roslin. You know, I'm still not exactly sure what the answer to this is without going back to much earlier episodes to refresh my memory. Adama clearly looks upset at Roslin when she tells him about Hera, but is it because he never knew or because she kept her in the school? Initially I'd say Adama didn't know, but then Helo gets on Adama, saying he should know better through having kids of his own.

Obviously those nukes are not sent to the planet's surface; we can all easily assume that. Though if their plan is to have those nukes sent on their way, a much more dramatic end to the episode would be them actually launching them. Could it be that Adama's tricking the Cylons and they're actually targeting the base stars with the nukes? Not likely, though I'm not sure what would change Adama's mind suddenly. The radios don't work, so no cry for a sudden stop from the planet would happen.

The only reasonable idea I have for what will stop Adama from releasing the nukes is Tyrol finding some sort of button in the temple that triggers some sort of massive visual event, pointing out into space to the direction of Earth. Everyone stops what they're doing and rushes back to their ships and starts heading that way. Got any theories of your own?

I'm not sure about you, but I'm about as eager to find out who those final five Cylons are as D'Anna is. Will we find out before the season's over? Will we learn of all of them or just one or two? Mid-January can't come soon enough.

Davis - You forget Pegasus. That would be the source of the additional nukes.

Akbar, first you say that there is no need to be judgmental and then you cal me pompous??? Why don't you set the example then rahter then assume a tone in my writing that does not exist.

Let me say again, it is not a matter of opinion that Judeo-Christianity and Hellenism are the domininant religio-cultural motif of Battle Star Galactica. It's a fact. The names like Adama are hebrew referring to Adam (i.e. the first man); They use sacred scriptures that are quoted, cited for prophetic relevance and used the way that Christians use their bible (Not the Bhagvad Gita which is a collection of bizarred non sensical myths); a promised child who is both man and cylon (i.e. Jesus is both man and God); The ship serves as a type of Noah's Arc; the gods which the humans worship are the Greek gods, whereas the Cylons speak of their God in Christian terms of recieving him into your heart, God is love etc (not the Islamic God but perhaps similar to him); the Cylons believe in a personal God who directs history and not a pantheistic force which negates many of the eastern religions from the ethos of Galactica. If you want Hinduism in your science fiction, you'll have to return the Star Trek the next Gen- you'll get lots of it there hahaha! I write this with all humility- please don't read it otherwise.

I think SJ hit the nail on the head in his/her (sorry) post about th 5 cylons finding Earth, but didn't come out and say it: I think we're going to discover that we, Earth humans, are descendents of Cylons and not the forbears of the colonists. So the line would go: 1. colonists create cylons 2. cylons revolt 3. cylons create new civilization 4. you're living in it. Wouldn't that be great?

IF Sackhoff really is to be bumped off in the series, whose idea is it? If so, I can't help thinking that the seeds of discontent may have grown from the disagreement Sackhoff had in the direction her character was going prior to season three. Remember reading about that? Sackhoff was lamenting that her character was being compromised into.....well...what we see at this time I suppose. Of course I am only speculating about this because we don't really know if her character will be killed off for certain.

Dorv, cheer up because I listened to most of that interview too, and Sackhoff never explicitly said it would happen. If you have a sixth sense then so be it but remember that these writers have a way of leading us off the beaten path, as you know. Another thing that was interesting is the interview revealed that the producers want at least two more seasons of BSG. That is according to some of the content in the interview.

Spoilers Follow:

Its a widely reported rumor that Sackoff does not appear in the final three episodes of the season (I think the rumor actually originated from someone leaking the fact that the work to remove her from the credits of those episodes had already taken place). She confirmed this rumor in the interview. She was asked point blank several times in the interview if she was dead, and her answer was always that she was not at liberty to say. She also was asked if she was a Cylon, which she 100% confirmed she was not.

If you listen to the whole interview, she dodges, twists, and turns the entire time, but I, unfortunately, am not buying it.

She gets beaten down for White Noise II, but the way its talked about in this interview, and some of the bits and pieces I've heard its actually a pretty good flick... So much so that there is a rumor discussed in the podcast that the producers wish they could release it with out the 'white Noise II' part in the name.

First, I gotta say, CALM DOWN boys. To think that all of this comes from an off the cuff remark.

Second, I just listened to the podcast of Cort and Fatboy (or whatever the hell the show is) of the Katee Sackoff interview, and I gotta say, I'm pretty darn certain that I'll be a very disappointed person in the second half of the second half of this season. Pretty funny interview, though.

Rick:

1. Don't be so quick to judge someone online, you have no idea of what they do or do not know. You accusing me of not having contact with religion and culture outside of christianity is completely false.

2. I did not take any personal offense at Keith refering to the sacrament line as a christian thing. I just don't accept it as that simple. See what you want in the show, it is your opinion but there is no solid defintion that what happens in the show has ANY direct ties to christian mythology. Coincidence and similar themes? Sure thing.

3. I never stated that anyone can't state their opinion on the show and its story. My main point was again that it is not as simple as you are making it out to be.

4. It was obvious I misquoted you as saying illusion. No need to continue your pompousness and continue to be instulting.

Oh Yeah, i did not say that the reference to sacrament was an allusion (not illusion) to Christianity, i said it happened within the context of allusions to Christianity. If you miss the allusions to Christianity (particularly mormonism), Judaism, and Greek paganism (both in the religion of the Cylons and the humans) that permeate the story, it is likely because you are unfamiliar with the subject. Nevertheless, the use of the word 'sacrament' in that context may or may not conote the Christian meaning. and i personally don't see why you and the others were so offended by Kieth's commentary on the subject, especially since you say it is a matter of opinion. Are others not free to express their opinions?
