Rick Kaplan going to The CBS Evening News?

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 28th 2006 4:02PM

Katie CouricThis is one of those "insider" news stories that most people won't care about one way or the other.

The New York Post's Page Six is reporting that former MSNBC head Rick Kaplan might be heading over to The CBS Evening News to help Katie Couric and her ratings. Of course, this story just says "rumored." It doesn't even have enough information to say "sources say" or "insiders say" or even "an anonymous person inside CBS." So who knows where they got the news.

Will this even help? Some people believe that the nightly network newscasts are a dinosaur, a thing of the past (I'm not one of them). Even if that's not true, maybe the CBS Evening News will just be in third place forever. That's where the show has been for a while and always will be, behind The NBC Nightly News and ABC World News.

My Prediction:

Katie will eventually win the No. 1 spot.

CBS recognizes that mostly old folks watch the national news anymore as others have many means to get news in today's technology. Katie has the right demographic in age and as more women switch from long standing TV news watching habits. She will get more viewers when Charlie Gibson quits/retires.

She is the softer side of news on purpose. Nobody watched evening news for breaking hard news. That's what the cable all news channels are for. I thought she was going to cry the other night when interviewing the mountain climber's widow and then realized they were dragging the whole segment out ala the Today show.

And CBS plugs their web site relentlessly each night to get viewers to follow up with the rest of the story that a 23 minute TV show never has time for.

Bet on Katie...

Maybe if Katie sat in a hot tub full of pickle juice while sucking on lemons... maybe that would help?

I'm not sure bringing in a new executive producer is going to help much. It seems to me that it boils down to which anchor has the most credibility, the most gravitas and the best on-screen persona.

Katie comes across as being too friendly and cutesy. Just listen to how she begins her broadcast or how she does local lead-ins during 6 PM local news.

She is just missing something and I can't really put my finger on it.

Their I idea to help ratings is to get a guy from the lowest rated cable news channel? That doesn't seem like a good way to go.
