The Five: What are your New Year's TV Resolutions?

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 31st 2006 5:30PM

American IdolI mentioned in a recent post that I resolved a few months ago not to watch the unholy crapfests that are Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, and Access Hollywood, but I still have a few New Year's resolutions to make when it comes to my TV viewing.

1. I resolve not to watch American Idol. I tried to do this last year and failed. You watch one episode of those damn auditions and you get laughing and you're hooked, like eating one Lay's potato chip or trying heroin. But after what happened last year (great singers not making it far enough, phone screw ups, Taylor Hicks winning), it's one show I don't want to bother with anymore.

2. Watch more cartoons and animated shows. I've really gotten away from this the past several years for some reason. No, not because I'm an adult, but because I just seem to forget that the Cartoon Network exists. I watch The Simpsons and Family Guy every week, but I really need to get more into all the cool shows that Adam writes about.

3. Buy the first season of Dexter. So many people say this is a great show I either have to get Showtime or buy the DVDs.

4. Record late night shows like Letterman and The Daily Show. Last year I think I resolved to go to bed earlier. When you pass 40, you can't stay up late into the night like you used to when you were 27, especially if you're like me and you get up at 6am. So I think I should start taping shows like Letterman and The Daily Show/The Colbert Report. Or record Letterman and watch the next day reruns of TDS and TCR.

5. And, to paraphrase Justin Timberlake, I resolve to bring sexy back to TV blogging.

1. Continue not watching American Idol. The show is now a caricature of itself.

2. Buy iTV.

3. Catch up on Heroes with my new iTV.

4. Lose weight.

5. Save money.

I resolve to force more people to tune in to Battlestar Galactica when it returns in 3 weeks. Damn you people not watching this show - watch this show!

Too bad more people don't share your extremely brilliant and insightful opinion at #1.

I say give Bones a chance. It's no longer the same thing every week and has an arching story dealing with Bones family and the FBI.

My New Year's TV Resolutions:

Catch up on 24, House, Lost, Heroes and Friday Night Lights.

Buy Dexter when it hits DVD. I've only watch the 1st 2 episodes thanks to Comcast OnDemand, but I'm hooked already.

Watch more Daily Show and Colbert Report.

Get a DVD Recorder so I can throw away the damn VCR! :)

Wow. I actually agree with a TVS resolution, sort of. I, too, resolve not to watch American Idel (spelling intentional). However, my reason is based on the fact I don't care for pop music or game shows.

Add to my list: give House and Bones a second shot. I don't get to watch on a regualr basis, but, the last few episodes have screamed snooze fest. I remember these shows being halfway good.

Find some TV Shows that don't suck. I watch more and more Discovery and History because I can't get into any new programming. I come here to try and find out about interesting programming and haven't had much sucess. The few shows I do like are usually blasted. I can't be the only one who enjoyed Rodney. Then again, I'm a huge fan of his comedy act.

I did not watch American Idol all last year until the final 6 weeks or so. That way I got to miss all those awful people, which I hate. I also didn't have to like the good singers that got cut. I never missed them. I had vowed to not watch at all. I almost made it. But I feel I wasted a lot less time on it. I highly recommend this method of viewing AI. Happy New Year all.

Just one comment on Taylor winning - listen to his new cd. It is really good. It may make you feel better about last season's American Idol. I, too, do not want to get hooked into it this year, though, but you are right, the auditions suck you in like quicksand.

The Daily Show and Cobert Report are on at 11pm, that's repeated the next day at like 2am, 9am, 2pm and 8 pm. I'm sure the 8pm one is better for older folk like yourself. :-p
