Why is CNN showing the James Brown funeral again?

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 1st 2007 3:33PM

Of all the 24 hour news channels, I'd have to say that I like CNN the best and watch it the most. FOX News is FOX News, and MSNBC blows hot and cold. But sometimes CNN just makes some really odd decisions that leave you scratching your head.

Right now they're showing the James Brown funeral. Again.

Now, James Brown was important to rock and roll, blah, blah, blah, but we already saw this funeral, the whole thing, just a few days ago on CNN and the other channels. Do we really have to see it again? I know it's New Year's Day, but isn't there any news going on in the world? Any war news we should know about? How about President Ford's body, which lies in state right now, with people walking past it giving their respects?

I know that pop culture is an important force in the world (I write about it full-time, so I'm all for it), but come on. It's 3pm on a Monday and you're repeating a singer's funeral? Not that the others are any better. FOX News is showing a special on religion and politics and MSNBC is showing more of those damn documentaries about crime. Gah.

Is there anywhere on your site that I can pull up the James Brown Funeral and watch it on the internet?

I was a big fan of Princess Diana's....I must have watched that funeral at least 3 times (on CNN). My husband was beginning to think I had serious issues! But after watching the Saddam hanging about 10 times, the James Brown funeral was certainly a change of pace. How many deceased people do you know change their outfits? That's a first! Just like he did during his many shows....what an entertainer!!! Even after his death. I would love a commemorative DVD.

You question (complain about) the airing of James Brown's funeral a second time by CNN and claim to write about pop culture full time?

I will not make the effort to educate and enlighten you as to who James Brown is or what he means to pop culture and why the airing of his funeral numerous times is not inappropriate.

I only urge that whoever pays you for your writings demand a refund. You are an imposter. Your head should be hanging in shame and embarrassment for displaying such a gross lack of knowledge about the topic you write about.

Either go to school and learn the basics of pop culture or find another job.

I'm glad they are showing James Brown on CNN again. I missed the first airing and am looking forward to watching the broadcast. That's the great thing about the cable network, they make their programing convenient to accomodate everyone's busy schedule. James Brown influenced generations of musicians of all nationalites and has impacted the Civil Rights and Human Rights movements. From the gut wrench vocals of Bruce Springsteen, the energy of Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones, the feet of Michael Jackson and M.C. Hammer, the blue eyed soul of Taylor Hicks and Michael McDonald, the quick wit of hip-hop lyricist Eminem to the Earth pop grooves of Justin Timberlake they have all borrowed from the original Hip-Hop master and Funk Soul innovator. When Marvin Gaye, John Lennon and Elvis passed away every radio station broke format to honor these legends. They are all icons and are engrained in popular music and culture. James Brwon deserves all these accolades and then some.

Alot of people missed James Brown's funeral the first time, including myself. It was extraordinary, just like the man. He was more than a singer. If you listened to what Jesse and Al said, about how James brought black people up with his writing/singing "I'm Black And I'm Proud", in contrast to rappers in general now who recyle violence, called us niggers and ho's.... It was great on so many levels. Sorry you can't comprehend that.

Just to let you know, the flag is still half mast, is that any coincidence for such a great American to be rewarded as such... and some say...Ahhh we half to see it again, maybe many more Americans should realize what sort of a stricken poverty born man should rise to such an enormous icon... what is it.. just some sort of magic? Ahhh.. how about such a pure spirit with unsurpassing faith in himself... I think the funeral should be aired once a year for the next 25 years and the flag be at half mast all the while the funeral is still going. Thanks be to God for such an enormous inspiration to America and all mankind to view and think what forces come and breed in such a free nation!!! Thanks for the blog time.

CNN can show whatever they want. It's up to you if you want to watch or not. If you choose not to, there's other people such as myself who will continue to tune in. I think CNN is very informative. As far as James Brown's funeral, I haven't seen yet, and would love to watch it once I get a chance. Stop being so negative, it's not going to get you anywhere.

Hats off to CNN. It is about time a National new channel pays tribute to an African American. James Brown was one of Americans greatest. There will always be some biase thinking people. Some people do not understand the meanings behind the words in his music. Therefore, they cannot relate to Mr. Brown's music. Therefore, they do not know why CNN aired his funeral twice. I am sorry I missed it. I hope it come on again.
Thanks CNN, great job.
