Dirt: Pilot (series premiere)

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jan 2nd 2007 11:06PM

Ian Hart (L) as Don Konkey and Courteney Cox (R) as Lucy Spiller on 'Dirt.'(S01E01) I think I may be the minority here. I've read a handful of other reviews for Dirt and I think I'm one of the few who actually thinks it's worth watching. I realize it isn't the best show but realistically it'll follow in the footsteps of Over*There and Starved -- two other very well done FX series that just didn't seem to find the viewers. Look on the bright side though: FX could have aired nothing new on Tuesday nights. At least there's something fresh until The Shield returns.

Rather than just repeat myself, most of my thoughts about the pilot are laid out in this preview post I put up a few weeks ago. Dirt has potential if it's done right but my guess is that it won't be handled properly. Brian Lowry over at Variety makes some excellent points about what's wrong and if certain things change then Dirt will definitely climb higher on my list. He suggests that if Don weren't so far out there as a character and if publicists had a larger role on the show, it would feel a lot different. Better? Hard to say, but definitely different.

There are certainly far worse things on television and Tuesdays are sparse for me anyway. So I'll be posting about Dirt every week. I want to know what other TV viewers think though. Will you stick with it or is this something you won't waste your time on? I'd suggest at least sticking it out until the third episode. If you weren't impressed with tonight's pilot, it definitely picks up after that. Let me know what you think in the comments.

I love this show. I am a Nip Tuck fan as well. This show is much more intriguing that I thought it would be. Does anyone know the song that plays in the opening credits. One of the lines is The truth will set you free. I have been searching all over the internet and can not find it.

LOVE THE SHOW! PLAN ON WATCHING MANY, MANY MORE TIMES! I GUESS THE SAME REASON IT'S FUN IS THE SAME REASONS IT'S FUN TO LOOK AT THOSE "ENQUIRER" MAGAZINES AT THE CHECKSTAND. AT THE SAME TIME IT HAS SHOWN HOW CORTNEY COX HAS GROWN AS AN ACTRESS. ONCE AGAIN, WONDERFUL SHOW, I JUST WISH IT WASN'T ON SO LATE

I love Fx tv! Some of the best shows on TV are from FX. Why wouldn't we give Dirt a chance to be something new and exciting? I liked the first episode, yeah, it could have been better, more realistic. Everyone seems to like Don's portrayal of a schitzo,I did too. But, I can tell you from the experience of having a family member who suffers from this illness, it's again, not very realistic. That he could go off his meds and reach the level of fanaticism that he did and still perform his job duties as a Dirt photographer is especially disturbing, just couldn't happen. Thank God that people don't really turn such a blind eye to the kind of behavour he presented and not get involved with some kind of offer to help. People are just not that out of tune to anothers pain and suffering (nor to the apparent danger they immediately represent).
Anyway, I've got my DVR set to tape this show and will watch to see how things unfold.

Here's a couple of thoughts(based on one of Drake's comments): What if people actually like the show and continue to watch it for those same reasons? Because of this, wouldn't it make Cox and Arquette's attempt to make the tabloid industry look bad actually backfire on them?

I like it too; however, that opening scene was just bad...I talking Wicked Wicked [whatever that MyTV show's name is] bad. It picked up from there...Gotta love "back door" scenes.

Margot, the video was of the girlfriend (Lily Allen from The 4400) having sex with her co-star in the movie that we saw the premiere of, where Don instigated that attack by her boyfriend.

The guy who played the boyfriend played it as such a sad sack that it ruined that whole storyline for me.

The stuff with Don the photographer, especially the scene in the pharmacy, was riveting.

Executive producers Courtney Cox and David Arquette hate the paparazzi, and while they can say over and over again that this show isn't revenge, the pilot surely says otherwise. Nothing subtle about it. Cox's character is one-dimensional... either on or off, no nuance whatsoever, which would be fine in a side character (like the one she played in the Scream franchise.) But as the main character, it's just not interesting to watch.

Especially when the dialogue is as stiff and forced as it was last night. Speaking of forced, the pilot's moral was as subtle as a tank.

It's one and done for me, I'm afraid. Too much quality programs out there to waste time on this drivel.
