Is anybody going to watch Grease?

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 3rd 2007 11:02AM
greaseI keep seeing promos for NBC's new reality show, Grease: You're the One That I Want, and I wonder whether anybody is going to watch it. Based on the promos alone, it looks as though NBC is capitalizing on the popularity of the early episodes of American Idol where we get to see a few good, but mostly very, very bad performers audition before the three judges. In this case, it's an open casting call for the new Broadway run of Grease. The casting directors need two actors/singers for the lead roles of Sandy and Danny. The first two episodes will feature all the auditions and then the group will be reduced down to 12 contestants on which the public will vote each week.

No doubt it'll be heartwarming to see some talented people finally get their shot at a Broadway audition. But... Grease? How popular is that? How annoying will those songs get after we've heard them over and over? I'm still on the fence about whether or not I'm going to watch. I think I may give this Sunday's premiere episode a whirl.

Tell me... do you plan on watching? Why or why not?

Ack, I've just noticed that the 1st commenter mentioned the British version, talk about newbie commenting!

I saw an advert tonight on ITV (in the UK) that seems to be the exact same show (even down to the show title) except for the London West End version, interesting that they'd be on at the same time.

I already hate it. But, as mentioned before, Grease is hugely popular.

I cringe just thinking about "You're the One That I Want" ad nauseum.

But, then again, I like big brother. :)

Oh yeah baby, we're there. Although I thought the song "You're the One That I Want" was just in the movie and not the theater version... Maybe they're making a stage version of the movie.

I plan on watching because I'm a big theatre nerd, but I don't know if the show will have mass appeal. Will be interesting to see!

I agree that hearing the Grease songs over and over will get annoying, but the show will probably be a big hit here. The guilty pleasure is in watching the "freak show" of bad auditions. In the end I doubt the producers will risk Broadway money on untested amateurs. The winners will have to be professionals who can take the brutal grind of regularly performing live on a B-way schedule.

(To Richard Smith: Did you watch the UK show? What were your impressions?)

The promos alone make me want to pour sulphuric acid in my ears and it brings back frightening memories of 7th grade gym in which I had to make a dance with 15 other boys in my gym class. Definitely a "No Watch".

If it's done right this show will be a success, because we'll be looking not for a single star but a full cast, choosing people we think fit specific roles we each have predefined in our heads. I think there are tons of theater people out there who will love this show, and I think it will do well. Grease was the perfect choice of a musical, as it's incredibly popular and built of mostly pop music. I don't know how they could do a second season though without changing the show they're casting.

This seems pretty similar to a show on the BBC called "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" where they auditioned loads of unknowns for the role of Maria in Andrew Lloyd Webbers stage version of 'The Sound of Music'. It was a popular show here and those songs are just as played out as Grease.
