Audience member sues Oprah

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 5th 2007 1:29PM
oprah winfreyThe gals who sit in the studio audience at Oprah can be brutal. One former audience member is suing Oprah's production company, claiming she was injured in the mad dash to get a good seat. Tayna Milner said she was pushed down some stairs at Harpo Studios in Chicago before a taping on April 11th. Milner is seeking more than $50,000 in damages for unspecified injuries, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. She is claiming that Harpo employees failed to keep control of the crowd of 40-something mothers with makeovers and cardigan sweaters (okay, I made up that last part).

This whole story goes along with how I picture Oprah's audience when it's not being taped. I always imagine women pulling each other's hair and dumping out their purses in the fight to get a good seat.

Oprah is responsible for safety on her set, just like any other business or establishment is responsible and liable for safety at their business. I think it's going a bit far to say that Oprah is 'Godlike' and therefore shouldn't be sued by a person who was injured in her studio. Whether or not Oprah is a 'giving' person isn't at issue. If the person was truly injured because the staff didn't maintain a safe environment, then they are liable. I don't think the answer is "If you're shoved; shove back." You shouldn't have to 'shove back.' (And how is that considered treating people as YOU would want to be treated?)

I've been in Oprah's audience and during commercial breaks, she chats and jokes with the audience. If your friend was shushed by Oprah, she probably deserved it. I don't think you're getting the whole story.

Yes I know first hand how dysfunctional people can make false allegations and those who believe them are just as dysfunctional as them. In the end the TRUTH will prevail however there are innocent people in jail and those who should be in jail are free and some work as social workers, Montessori educators, pastors, police officers etc. AND YES GOD AND ONLY GOD IS THE FINAL JUDGE..........

I agree with Brian, post #7. It is the host's responsibility to maintain positive control of the environment. Although my mother would never be caught dead going to an Oprah show, she could easily become trampled due to her mobility issues if there was no one in control of the crowd.

I have read the details the the McDonald's incident, too. I used to feel the same as Cindie until I studied it a bit. There is more to it than a burnt tootie!

BTW, what is 50k to Oprah? 3 hours of interest on her bank account? Pay the lady then go to Busch Gardens and learn about crowd control.

I am one of those folks who would give away an Oprah ticket if it was given to me. A friend of mine loves Oprah and was a studio audience. She was shocked at how Oprah spoke, in a demeaning manner, to audience members who were chatting when the cameras were not on.
When the audience is not being taped, she can be a meany!

After living in this "great" country for 5 years, I now conclude that, In America one can sue, and be sued
for virtually anything.
Amusing.
