Anime versions of The Simpsons and Futurama

FuturamaQuite contrary to the stereotype associated with my nationality, I'm not a big fan of anime. That two year phase came and went while I was still in elementary school, thanks very much. Nowadays, I find the "anime look" a little boring, so when an artist actually does something fun and exciting with it, I sit up and take notice. I also love it when people re-interpret cartoons in different artistic styles (for example, the realistic sketches of Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny on South Park a few months ago)

So, when I found this artist's group shots of The Simpsons' and Futurama's ensembles, I was pretty amazed. Each character looks totally different, but it's still easy to tell who's who (a most important element in good fan-art). I think it's fantastic, but, I must admit, I'm a little disturbed by Lisa's striking resemblance to the characters of Dragon Ball. It must be a hair thing.

The Simpsonzu picture is as revelatory as that British promo from last year which recreated the opening sequence in live action -- in both cases, there are choices about what the characters would look like taken out of Matt Groening's style that had never occurred to me, but make absolutely wonderful sense when you see them. For example, compare Marge with Patty and Selma in this drawing: space coyote has captured something about their respective personalities we'd never see any other way.

All the little continuity references in the Futurama cast drawing -- like the anchovies, Farnsworth's fingerlonger, Hermes' brain slug -- show that this is the work of a true fan. But it's Zoidberg who stands out: the doctor looks far more alien and disturbing and *realistic* than he ever has before.

Also, the artist has been doing a long-running and award-winning SF webcomic called "Saturnalia" for the past several years, which can be found at:

Cool. I have some minor quibbles with the Simpsons ones, Lisa and Bart look a bit generic, you only really know it's them since they have to be there and they aren't going to be anyone else. Also, as we know Krusty basically looks like Homer bit with make-up and a wig - they don't really look the same in this instance.
