What About Brian: What About the Tangled Web

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jan 9th 2007 7:03AM
Krista Allen on 'What About Brian.'(S02E10) This was the type of episode that originally drew me to What About Brian. It was fast-paced, all the stories intertwined, and it was laugh out loud funny on more than one occasion. It's a good thing too because had this episode not been so good, and I was planning on not reviewing it anymore. This one has me hooked again and believe it or not, it had nothing to do with the cliffhanger.

First off, we had the culmination of Nic's pregnancy. She had a girl (named her Bella) and seems like everything in the delivery room went smoothly. While sweet and all, there was no real point to Nic's story here other than how it served to give her closure with Angelo. What it really did was bring Dave and Deena's marital issues into full focus.

These two do not get along at all and I love how their bickering has finally put them in a position where it puts off their friends. Once the people they see day in and day out can't stand them, maybe Dave and Deena can get back together. Then we'll be done with Deena's terrible dates and the accompanying stories that go with them. That TK guy? Talk about disposable. That was such a waste of time in the last episode. Speaking of which, what happened to the cupcake business? I hated the idea but it got dropped a bit abruptly, no?

Then of course we have the two stories that are just making my head-spin. Briget and Sandwich Girl. For all intensive purposes, Brian and Dave have both hit pay dirt. But c'mon, each situation is so wrong. Dave's life rule #2: Never go after your Dad's sloppy seconds. Dave needs another rule for himself though: don't date someone who could just as easily be babysitting your children while you're on that date. Each case has its own ethical/moral/freak show issues, but I suppose you can't blame either of them. Briget and Sandwich Girl? Damn.

As far as Adam goes, I've warmed up to him of the course of this season. Heather too for that matter. It really does seem like these two are in it for the long-haul. Adam's willingness to buy out the strip-club every night until Heather quit was a nice touch.

And then there was the cliffhanger. As I said, this was a great episode without the return of Marjorie. I found it a bit anti-climactic though. We knew she was coming back, it was just a matter of when. So this was less of an "oh my god" moment and more of an... well, I don't know what kind of moment I thought it was. I think I found myself saying "touché" as she came down the LAX escalator, which I guess makes sense because her coming back now is a well-played move on the part of the show writers. Adam and Brian both seem to be happy and now Marjorie is going to screw it all up. This should only get better now.

Great Lines:

Dave (regarding the lap dance he just got while eating lunch): "Dude, this so doesn't happen at Subway."

Dave (to Brian, offering help with the Briget situation): "If you ever feel a little tingle down below, think about your buddy Dave."

I liked this show until the past episode. There was something just way too creepy with the whole 'Dad's sloppy seconds' thing & when watching two actors as hot as those two are, it should have been steamy, but it was just nasty & gross.
Also, Dave & Deena have gone way past selfish & I wish Nic would have just slapped the crap outta both of them! No thank you anymore!
Thank you

To the above poster, quit spamming!

Anyway, age is really nothing but number, except if you are 'underage'. So she is 20? She can drive legally and vote. I see no problem with Dave dating a LEGAL woman. Nic's storyline is very nauseating. I'm sure the death of losing someone is hard, ut just when you think she's over it, nope..BOOM, right back in our faces. Adam Adam Adam...so you knew she was a stripper BEFORE you married her, and now all of a sudden it's a problem? What? You knew guys looked at her. I don't get that.

Brian and Bridget? No comment.

I laughed out loud a few times last night and the Subway comment was one of them. I like how they are playing Adam in a more calm manner. He really is trying instead of just bossing Heather around. It could have so easily been the other way. I thought this was a better way to get her out of the strip club than Adam ordering her to stop and she hating him for it. Of course Adam's temper might return with Marjorie.

I'm not a big Bridget fan. You are are a work retreat and you are making out by the elevator in front of your co-workers? Plus why would you want Dad to know what you are doing? I get the chemistry part but the whole leaving as soon as the dinner was over, giggling, hand in hand, etc. just makes them both look bad. I know Brian doesn't care but you would think she would considering she's the top realtor or something.

So glad we got some closure with Angelo. At least they didn't sweep it under the rug like some shows would have done. I think her reactions were normal for a pregnant woman who found out her husband cheated on her before he died. But Rosanna is such a good actress and she's being wasted in this role. I hope the beef her part up now that the baby is here.

I never watched this series until I was flipping by and saw Krista Allen. So weird to see her fully clothed, but I was nonetheless intrigued.

It's a good show and I can relate. I like the sandwich girl and if I were Dave, I would totally go after her. You know the old rule: half your age plus 7.

Jonathan, the common phrase is "intents and purposes," while "intensive purposes" is generally considered a malapropism.

See:

But because it has a logic of its own, many people keep using "intensive." Curious, Jonathan, which camp are you in?

No judgment here, just curious about linguistics. :)

The Sandwich Girl subplot is suspiciously like the mid-90's Britcom "Is It Legal?", wherein bumbling clerk Bob keeps ordering wraps from Blimpies downstairs so he has an excuse to speak to the Asian woman who delivers to the office. Since he doesn't actually like Blimpie's wraps, he dumps them into his bottom desk drawer after she leaves, until it fills up.
