Laura Innes talks about leaving ER

Laura Innes on ERFor those of you who watched last week's ER and thought, "Whoa! Weaver got fired?!", you're not alone. But if you also thought that there might be an opening for Laura Innes' character to stick around, you'd be wrong. Innes tells TVGuide.com that she's definitely leaving the show after tonight's episode; she may come back for an episode or two next year, but that's about it.

Basically, after playing Kerry Weaver for over eleven years, she just felt it was time to go. That's kind of a surprise to me, because for the first time in a few years, the Weaver character was actually going in a good direction, with a new hip, a new girlfriend, and that TV job. And, because she was just a plain attending and not management, her power-hungry side was gone. But that was part of the plan to have her leave, according to Innes, as well as making it a mid-season surprise.

She's going to do more directing -- she's directed episodes of House and Studio 60 this year in addition to ER -- and may act if the right thing comes along. In the interview, she also discusses being a role model for disabled people, being one of the first main lesbian characters on TV, and who she still hangs out with from amongst the massive set of ER alumni. What she doesn't talk about was playing Bunny, Lowell's girlfriend on Wings. But you can't cover everything, I guess.

She hints that other cast members will leave at the end of the year. There are rumors that Goran Visnjic might go, but I haven't heard about anyone else. Any ideas out there? Let me know in the comments.

I have watched ER since the show started. When you've been deticated to watching a show that long, you tend to get into the characters lives...well at least some of them. I have been waiting for years for Abby to finally find some stability and happiness in her life and now, rumors that Luka may be leaving and Kerri is gone...it's not always in the best interest of the show to replace the one's that are the backbone of the show and bring in characters who have nothing to contribute but the bad things in their lives such as fighting with their family, doing nothing but drinking and having sex with someone different every week, etc. There are people in the world with some stability in their lives you know. ER isn't ER anymore. You draw faithful viewers in and then disappoint us.

I think that if Goran Visnjic is leaving Ames will probably kill him or something and that'll be his dramatic ending but I hope its not and that he doesnt die so he's open to returning cos he's just such a great character!!!!!!

C'mon! Bunny wasn't Lowell's girlfriend, she was his wife!

I've only heard rumors of Goran Visnjic leaving at the end of this season because he's getting tired of doing the show. I've watched this show for many seasons, and while I've been a fan of Luka on the show, this year I think his story is going downhill with the whole Ames/overprotective thing. I guess I can understand it considering his past, but I'd just like it if he and Abby could relax and enjoy their lives.

Maybe Mekhi Phifer is leaving? If he goes to jail in this current storyline (tho, as in most tv shows, probably won't happen) but maybe he'll 'move on' to someplace else.
