Jaclyn Smith will host Shear Genius
The addition of Jaclyn Smith as host though, that's enough to get me to tune in at least once and give the show a try. She'll be joined on the show by celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger as the head judge. According to NBC, the contestants will "go head-to-head in creative challenges that require more than just talent with a comb and scissors." If you have seen Top Chef or Project Runway, I think you have an idea about how this one is going to go. Although, it's one thing to watch Vincent make a model look ridiculous for 2 minutes in his "crap glued on poster board" getup, it is a whole other deal to watch someone get their head mutilated by a contestant's artistic vision. The potential for cringe inducing comedy is high.
I think Smith will do great in her role as host. She always seems to handle herself well in front of the camera. While I doubt that she will reach Tim Gunn levels, because Tim is the perfect host, she should have no trouble besting the Top Chef hosts. Both Katie Lee Joel and Padma Lakshmi have left something to be desired. Look for the success of the show to track along similar lines. It won't be Project Runway, but should fall right in line with the Top Chef numbers.
And in a fun twist, the show is looking for their big cut line. Heidi's "You're out." and "Auf Wiedersehen" have caught on well, but "Please pack your knives and go.", well, not so much. If you have a great idea for what Jaclyn can say to the dismissed stylist, you can suggest it on the Bravo blog. The show is scheduled to premiere in the spring.
