24 to detonate nukes this season?

by Meredith O'Brien, posted Jan 15th 2007 3:41PM

Jack Bauer on Drudge ReportThe Drudge Report had a lead story on its web site today citing anonymous sources who say that this season's 24 story line may involve the detonation of nuclear weapons. (Wait a second, didn't we already have a nuke detonation?)

Drudge, noting that a recent, real-life CIA report had "outlined a scenario of [a] possible 'series of explosions using low charge nuclear weapons,'" said that Fox studio sources want to push the nuclear story line in order to wake up the U.S. populace to the real dangers of terrorists setting off nuclear bombs

I don't really see how 24 creators working nuclear bomb explosions into Day Six would wake Americans up to the very real concerns about terror attacks. Yes, it is unnerving to see faux-news reports bearing 9/11-type images of bloodied Americans playing in the background on 24 from the "Fox News" channel. But would a nuclear weapon story line in 24 make me any more concerned about the safety of Americans than actual news reports about Iran developing nuclear capabilities?

Uh, no.

What do you make of this Drudge news item? Do you think 24 writers would create plot turns in order to try to influence U.S. foreign policy?

UPDATE: I just wanted to clarify, the nuclear detonation to which I was referring happened in Season Two, when George Mason died.

I enjoy reading this site and thankfully did not see this spoiler headline and article before seeing last night's episodes, but I would strongly suggest that you issue an apology to your readers for this incident, and promise to be extra careful in the future to avoid spoilers.

This was a spoiler because if you read this before watching the episodes, as soon as the nuke plotline came up, you would be more inclined to think that the nuke would actually go off.

It's clear that the only things Drudge cares about are pushing his far-right agenda and getting as much attention as possible.

The Drudge article reminds me of a somewhat different situation a few years ago when right-wingers intentionally released spoilers about the ending of Million Dollar Baby in an attempt to advance their agenda and harm the movie.

NO, IDIOT I for one WAS spoiled by the headline. I
knew that there was going to be a big suprise at the end of last nights episode and I had no idea what it could even be until I saw the headline, after that
it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what the twist was going to be.

The spoiler didn't come from the article...it came from the comments. Idiots.

Since when is it ok to have spoilers in the headline?

Good grief! After having a really bad day two years ago, then tortured for two years, Jack comes back to the fourth idiot in the White House, new obnoxious beligerents at CTU, even Curtis going schizophrenic, and having to take care of a new day for us. Then the audience has to endure politically "correct" ideology incorporated even as we are nuked! Are we that incompetent, or just stupid, to continue watching?
Let's see -- just how many died in four hours because of the President's ignorance, CTU's bickering? Go ahead, let them all out of prison. That should keep Jack busy for the next decade or two.

James, regardless of whether or not the headline was posed as a question, those of us who did not spoil ourselves about this season had NO IDEA that there was a nuclear weapon until the last half hour of the night!

It was lame and irresponsible to post something like that above a blog cut, I didn't read the post, but the headline was big enough.

Because it's big, really big. As someone said, this is television, but it's still one of the biggest shows on tv right now and let's be honest, if they're gonna detonate a nuke 4 hours into a fresh new season, well.. that's news. And this is the internet where news happens virtually instantly. Someone got wind of it, I posted about it: http://www.itsonmytv.com/2007/01/15/is-24-going-to-nuke-a-city-tonight/
Meredith felt it hot enough to post for discussion and so have a ton of others out there. I posed it as a question, so did Meredith, there's no real attempt to spoil your evening, you didn't have to read the article but it's still a hot topic for a show that just started. And guess what, they did it, so if you live on the west coast and you just got spoiled, tough, you should be watching not reading anyway. Geez, come on, it's not like anyone spoiled who the American Idol will be...

This is just downright pathetic and irresponsible. Have you ever heard of a spoiler warning.

I was just scanning the headlines before the show began and had the plot twist spoiled.

I cannot believe this, this is a disgusting mishap on behalf of TVSquad. This was supposed to be a huge plot twist, and it would have been if not for your colossal bungling.

Thanks, Meredith, because of this crap I'm going to find my TV news elsewhere.
