Disney cancels DVDs of classic 'toons

by Adam Finley, posted Jan 16th 2007 6:01PM

disneyThere's a lot of animation I enjoy, but Disney's output has always been near the bottom of my list. My love for all things Warner Bros. may rival whatever admiration I have for Disney, but I'll admit I've always loved Disney's short-form cartoons, especially anything featuring Donald Duck or Goofy.

Why do I mention this? Well, news is popping up on some corners of the internet where animation nerds like myself hang out, and it seems that Disney has stopped production on its "Walt Disney Treasures" DVD collections. These collections, which the studio has been putting out since 2001, would have eventually collected every Disney short ever made. Much like the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD sets, some purists have found fault with the DVD's production values, but I file such minor glitches under "Beggars Can't Be Choosers."

Okay, so maybe you don't care about cartoons of any kind. That's fine, we all have our likes and dislikes. However, try to look at it as a piece of television and movie history stopped short of being preserved for new generations to appreciate. Sources indicate that the DVDs are being stopped to make way for new projects from the company, and not because of a lack of public interest. Many fans have already started writing Disney to complain, but it remains to be seen if the studio will finish what it started.

There was talk of releasing "Song of the South" but that was before the new management came in.

As for the Disney Treasures series, I own some but made conscious decisions to not buy all of them. The decision to stop making them still sucks that fetid air bubble that Sasha Baron Cohen talked about at the Golden Globes. Again I have a strong suspicion that it was one of those decisions made by the new management team at Disney.

Destin,

It's not that complicated... Animation = Yeah!. Disney = Meh (WB blows them away), however Disney Shorts (esp Donald and Goofy) = Yeah!+

This sucks. I own all the Treaures tins, so with this news I can't help but think that they all they'll do is put out half-hearted collections for the masses rather than sets like these for collectors and people who really care about film history and such.

I really don't understand the first paragraph. Do you like Disney or not? It seems like every sentence contradicts the one before it.

I am guessing no "Song of the South" will make it to disc? At least not in the US?

"Why do you guys clip articles when there's only a single paragraph left?"

Because my bosses tell me to do that.

"Did you mean to say that "Disney's output has always been near the top of my list"?"

Actually, the sentence is fine, but it had a double negative in it that made it awkward. I changed it for clarity. Thanks :)

Damn. I'm not a huge Disney fan, but I do enjoy Donald Duck cartoons and I had bought the previous two sets. Donald really should have been more of a priority, but instead they put out some odd sets that I couldn't imagine doing nearly as well.
